ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54: At First Glance

ASUS is a well-known brand and definitely one of the largest laptop manufacturers in the world. The brand is popular for delivering high-performance business laptops and gaming laptops.

Moreover, ASUS really outdid itself with the release of the VivoBook M580VD-EB54 in 2018. Specifically, this laptop features the right amount of specs for carrying out productivity tasks and gaming effectively so as to provide versatility.

As a matter of fact, the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 is actually a gaming laptop but it doesn’t look like one. This is due to the fact that it features a slim, not-too-flashy, and lightweight design.

However, laptops that offer such versatility are usually expensive, and this ASUS laptop isn’t an exception. To be more specific, the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 had a starting price tag of $1,499.77 when I published this article in April 2022.

Does this laptop actually worth the price tag? Read on to find out!

ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54: Design, Dimension, and Weight

To start with, the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 comes with an elegant chassis that is made with premium aluminum material. Thanks to this aluminum chassis, the laptop is quite durable and feels solid.

In addition to its impressive, durable aluminum chassis, the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 comes in a distinctive grey color with a matte finish. This color gives the laptop a sleek and attention-grabbing look.

Besides, the lid of the laptop features an “ASUS” logo boldly imprinted at the center which adds to the laptop’s overall sleekness. That said, opening this laptop’s lid reveals a 15.6-inch display with an FHD (1920 x 1080) resolution.

Although not good as a 4K resolution, this FHD resolution allows the display to deliver adequate picture quality for gaming and video streaming. Moreover, the FHD resolution is far better and allows a display to deliver crispers and sharper picture quality than the standard HD resolution.

This is due to the fact that the FHD resolution features about two times the total amount of pixels that the HD resolution has. Sadly, the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54’s 15.6-inch display offers poor viewing angles.

Hence, when watching the display from the sides or off-center, you will notice color distortion and blurry pictures. On a positive note, the laptop’s display features an anti-glare coating on its surface.

This coating helps prevent reflections and reduces the density of sun glares when the laptop is used outdoors or in bright areas. Besides, the anti-glare coating also enhances the display’s color accuracy and presentation, making images look sharper.

On the downside, the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 comes with relatively thick bezels that surround its display. Unlike the chassis of the laptop, these bezels are entirely made out of plastic and feature a matte-black finish.

Also, the top bezel houses an HD webcam at the center, while the bottom bezel features an “ASUS” logo also at the center. Although this webcam isn’t suitable for taking selfies as it delivers blurry images, it is ideal for casual video calls.

Moving over to the base of the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54, you will see a chiclet-style keyboard. This keyboard features evenly-spaced keys with a decent 1.4 mm key travel and adequate tactile feedback.

Hence, the keyboard should offer nothing short of a comfortable typing experience. In case you are curious, key travel is the total distance between a key’s resting point to full depression.

Impressively, the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54’s chiclet-style keyboard features a dedicated numeric keypad on the right side. As a result, accounting computing tasks or data entry should be easy on this laptop.

That aside, the laptop’s keyboard is also backlit. Thus, typing in dark environments should be problem-free.

Unfortunately, the laptop’s integrated touchpad that is located underneath the keyboard, is quite small. Due to its small size, some users may find it difficult and make mistakes when using the touchpad to navigate.

Nevertheless, the surface of the touchpad is very smooth and responsive. Also, the touchpad supports multi-touch gestures such as pinch-to-zoom.

Surprisingly, despite the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 being so thin, it comes with a decent number of ports. Specifically, on the right side, the laptop features a USB 3.2 Type-A port, USB 2.0 port, Kensington lock, 3.5 mm combo audio jack, and SD card reader.

Meanwhile, the left side of the laptop accommodates an Ethernet port, an HDMI port, a USB 3.2 Type-C port, another USB 2.0 port, and the power connector. For wireless connectivity, the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 comes with Bluetooth 4.2 and a built-in Wi-Fi 5 802.11ac.

In terms of size and weight, the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 measures 380 x 256 19.2 mm (W x D x H) and weighs 1990 g. Comparatively, this laptop is lighter and slimmer than the Lenovo Legion Y730 15ICH.

To be more specific, the Lenovo Legion Y730 15ICH measures 361.4 x 267 x 19.9 – 22.4 mm (W x D x H) and weighs 2200 g.

In conclusion, the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 features a sleek design with a durable aluminum build. Also, this laptop comes with a good number of ports despite its slim form factor.

Therefore, there is nothing stopping me from rating the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 a nine out of ten in this design review section.

ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54: Processor (CPU) Performance

The processor is otherwise known as the powerhouse of every computer. This is because almost every computing task depends majorly on the processor.

In that regard, the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 comes with an Intel Core i5-7300HQ processor. This processor is a quad-core processor that features a cache memory of 6 MB.

Also, the CPU has a base frequency of 2.5 GHz and a maximum frequency of 3.50 GHz. Performance-wise, due to the specs of this CPU, it should be able to handle most computing tasks.

Hence, the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 will be able to effectively run demanding applications like Adobe Photoshop. Also, the laptop should be able to multitask with ease as well as play most title AAA games.

To further verify the performance of the laptop with this CPU, we will now discuss its result on a Geekbench 3 test. In brief, the Geekbench 3 is a cross-platform app-based benchmark test that examines a computer’s processing abilities by simulating real-world workloads.

Furthermore, on this test, higher is better. Hence, based on the test result, the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 scored 3184 points.

In comparison, this laptop was outperformed by the Acer Aspire VX15 VX5-591G-589S, which uses the same processor. Specifically, the Acer Aspire VX15 VX5-591G-589S was able to score 3195 points on the Geekbench 3 test.

However, compared to the Lenovo Legion Y520-15IKBN, which also uses the Intel Core i5-7300HQ CPU, the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 performed better. To be more specific, the Lenovo Legion Y520-15IKBN scored 3163 points on the Geekbench 3 benchmark test.

All this considered, I will rate the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 an eight out of ten in this processor review section.

ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54: Memory (RAM) Performance

For the memory department, the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 offers a standard 8 GB DDR4 RAM in its single slot. Also, this laptop supports a maximum memory of 16 GB.

Hence, in order to upgrade the laptop’s memory, you have to remove the standard memory on the single slot and insert a larger RAM size. However, upgrading the memory might not be necessary if you aren’t planning to use this laptop for intensive tasks.

Nevertheless, since the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 is a gaming laptop, I believe the maximum memory of 16 GB is recommended. This is because most title AAA games nowadays require at least 16 GB of RAM to run smoothly.

Besides, with 16 GB RAM, handling memory-demanding tasks like video editing on Adobe Premiere Pro should be very easy for the laptop. Also, heavy multitasking will be easy for the laptop with 16 GB RAM.

Speaking of multitasking, with this amount of memory, the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 will be able to run 15 Chrome tabs simultaneously without lagging. Moreover, switching between the tabs should be seamless for the laptop.

To fully understand the capability of this laptop with 16 GB RAM, we will consider its PCMark 8 test result. For clarity, the PCMark 8 is a benchmark test that examines the performance and efficiency of a computer by emulating day-to-day computing tasks.

Furthermore, according to the settings of the test, a higher score signifies a good performance. Therefore, based on the test result, the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 scored 3056 points which is considerably high.

However, when compared with the MSI GT62VR, the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 performed less. Specifically, on the same PCMark 8 test, the MSI GT62VR scored 4541 points.

All in all, I will rate the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 an eight out of ten in this memory review section.

ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54: Storage Options and Performance

In terms of storage, the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 comes with a SATA SSD and supports a maximum storage capacity of 256 GB. Honestly, for most users, a maximum storage capacity of 256 GB is quite limited.

As a matter of fact, there are various smartphones in the market that also offer a max storage capacity of 256 GB. Thankfully, this ASUS laptop comes with an SD card reader for storage expansion.

Besides, because the laptop uses an SSD (Solid State Drive), it should offer fast transfer speed and rapid boot time. Also, opening and saving files on the laptop should be very fast.

To prove this, I will now be discussing the laptop’s result on the CrystalDiskMark test. Briefly, the CrystalDiskMark test is a benchmark test that measures the read and write speed of a computer’s storage drive.

In case you are wondering, the read speed is how fast a computer’s storage drive can open a file. Meanwhile, the write speed is how fast the storage drive can save a file.

Moreover, on the CrystalDiskMark test, the higher the “MBps” value, the faster the read and write speed of the computer’s storage drive. So, based on the benchmark test results, the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54’s SSD has a sequential read speed of 1570 MBps.

Also, the laptop’s SSD has a sequential write speed of 540 MBps. Comparatively, this ASUS laptop has a faster reader and write speed than the Acer Predator Helios 500, which also uses SSD.

Precisely, the Acer Predator Helios 500 recorded a sequential read speed of 1001 MBps on the CrystalDiskMark test. That’s not all; it also recorded a sequential write speed of 484.1 MBps.

Due to its performance on the benchmark test, I will rate the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 an eight out of ten in this storage review section.

ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54: Graphics Card Performance

By default, the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 comes with an Intel HD Graphics 630. Basically, this GPU is an integrated graphics card, meaning it is embedded into the laptop’s processor.

Hence, as long as the laptop features the Intel Core i5-7300HQ processor, it definitely comes with the Intel HD Graphics 630 GPU. Moreover, the GPU has a base frequency of 350 MHz and a maximum frequency of 1000 MHz.

However, because it is an integrated GPU, it won’t be able to handle graphics-demanding games and applications. Apparently, since the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 is a gaming laptop, it can’t just feature an integrated GPU.

Besides, why would it be called a gaming laptop if it cannot handle graphics-demanding games and apps? In that regard, apart from its default integrated GPU, this ASUS laptop also features a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 GPU.

This GPU has a base frequency of 1392 MHz and a maximum frequency of 1518 MHz. Also, as a dedicated GPU, it comes with a dedicated VRAM of 3 GB GDDR5.

Thus, thanks to this dedicated GPU, the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 should be able to run graphics-demanding apps and play most title AAA games. For example, while playing Battlefield 4, the laptop delivered an impressive frame rate of 132.7 fps.

That’s not all; while playing the popular Dirt 3, the laptop delivered a frame rate of 70 fps.

Having said that, let us quickly discuss the laptop’s result on the 3DMark test to further verify its graphics performance. In brief, the 3DMark test is a benchmark test used to measure a computer’s 3D and 2D graphics rendering ability.

Moreover, it is worth mentioning that a high score on this test equates to good graphics performance. So, based on the test result, the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 scored 53471 points.

Compared with the ASUS ROG GL502VS DB71, which uses a dedicated NVIDIA GTXM 1070 GPU, this ASUS laptop performed way better. Specifically, on the same 3DMark test, the ASUS ROG GL502VS DB71 scored 22022 points.

To wrap up this graphics performance review section, I will rate the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 a nine out of ten.

ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54: Battery Life and Performance

The ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 is powered by a 3-cell 47 WHrs Li-ion battery. According to ASUS, this laptop’s battery should last for about 6 hours.

In order to verify ASUS’ claim, I will now highlight the laptop’s result on a video playback test. Briefly, this test involves looping a 4K video on the laptop till it dies.

Hence, at the end of the test, the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 delivered a battery life of 4 hours. If you think this battery life is poor, you will be disappointed when I tell you the laptop lasted only 1 hour and 30 minutes on an intense gaming test.

In comparison, the Schenker XMG P506 PRO lasted about 4 hours and 27 minutes on the video playback test. Meanwhile, this laptop lasted 1 hour and 38 minutes on the intense gaming test.

Due to its poor performance in this battery review section, I will rate the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB54 a seven out of ten.
