The ASUS ROG Rapture GT-BE98 Pro is a premium quad-band Wi-Fi 7 router whose strongest case is its unusual combination of two 6GHz radios and extensive multi-gigabit ports. It is worth considering if you have compatible newer Wi-Fi devices, fast broadband or a multi-gigabit wired network to take advantage of it. Its advertised 30 Gbps is an aggregate theoretical rate—not the speed one device or an internet connection should expect—and its large, conspicuous design and price make it an extravagant choice for many homes.

What does the GT-BE98 Pro offer?

ASUS lists the ROG Rapture GT-BE98 Pro as a Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) quad-band router. Its four radios comprise one 2.4GHz band, one 5GHz band, and two 6GHz bands. The second 6GHz radio can serve as a dedicated link between compatible mesh devices, leaving another radio available for client traffic; it does not double the speed of a single client.

ASUS advertises up to 30 Gbps across all bands. That is a theoretical aggregate Wi-Fi class figure, not a measured result, a guaranteed internet speed, or a promise that one device can transfer data at 30 Gbps. Actual performance depends on the connected client, band, channel conditions, distance, and network setup.

How fast is it in independent testing?

Tom’s Hardware tested the router with iPerf 3.16 and ping tests, using a desktop with a 10GbE adapter as the server and a Wi-Fi 7 laptop with Qualcomm FastConnect 7800 as the client. On 6GHz, it measured 2,410 Mbps at six feet and 2,050 Mbps at 25 feet. These are results from that test setup, not household guarantees or a direct measure of internet speed.

In the same testing, congested traffic reduced close-range 6GHz throughput by about 20%, while the 25-foot 6GHz result fell only slightly. The review also reported sub-15ms ping in its tests, but materially weaker distance performance on 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Band, distance, traffic, client hardware, and surroundings matter when comparing these figures with another router’s results.

Is the ASUS ROG Rapture GT-BE98 Pro worth it?

It makes the most sense when its particular strengths solve a real network need: multi-gigabit wired expansion, two 6GHz radios, or a high-end Wi-Fi 7 setup with clients capable of using newer features. Its port selection is more compelling than the 30 Gbps headline for many buyers. A 10GbE NAS or desktop and a multi-gigabit broadband connection can make the wired connections useful; a household built around gigabit internet and ordinary gigabit devices is less likely to benefit from paying for them.

Buy it if

  • You can use 10GbE or 2.5GbE connections for a broadband gateway, NAS, desktop, or other wired equipment.
  • You have Wi-Fi 7 clients and want access to its newer wireless capabilities, or expect to add compatible devices.
  • You need a second 6GHz radio for a suitable AiMesh backhaul arrangement.
  • You value the configuration options and wired expansion more than a compact, unobtrusive router.

Consider a simpler option if

  • Your internet service and wired equipment top out at gigabit speeds, so the extra multi-gigabit ports would go unused.
  • Most devices are older Wi-Fi clients and you do not plan to upgrade them. They can connect, but will not gain the full Wi-Fi 7 or 6GHz benefit.
  • You need a discreet device or convenient wall or ceiling mounting. RTINGS notes that the router has a large footprint, aggressive styling, and no wall or ceiling mounting.
  • You mainly want straightforward whole-home coverage rather than deep customization and multi-gigabit wired expansion. RTINGS’ comparisons indicate that simpler mesh-oriented or lower-cost Wi-Fi 7 options may offer better value for many homes.

Price varies by region and over time. Check the live local price before deciding: the ASUS US product result and Tom’s Hardware’s review context showed different figures, so neither should be treated as a universal current price.

Is the GT-BE98 Pro good for gaming?

ASUS includes gaming prioritization and Mobile Game Mode, among other network features. Those are vendor-described features, not a guarantee of lower latency. RTINGS says the gaming features do not significantly improve wireless speed or latency and recommends Ethernet for competitive play. A wired connection avoids the extra variability of a Wi-Fi link; the router’s multiple faster Ethernet ports can help if the rest of your gaming network supports them.

For casual play, Wi-Fi may be convenient, but buying this router specifically for a promised wireless latency advantage is not well supported by the independent assessment. Broadband quality, congestion, and the game server also affect the experience.

What internet speed can it handle?

The GT-BE98 Pro’s 10GbE and 2.5GbE WAN/LAN options provide headroom for multi-gigabit service, subject to the port configuration, ISP equipment, subscription, and network setup. They do not make an internet plan faster. The advertised 30 Gbps combines theoretical wireless rates across bands; it is not usable internet throughput for a single connection.

For a meaningful upgrade, the rest of the path must also support the speed: the modem or optical network terminal, router WAN setup, client Ethernet adapter or Wi-Fi radio, and any switches or cabling in between. If one link is limited to 1Gbps, that link can bottleneck traffic passing through it.

Does it need Wi-Fi 7 devices?

No. Older Wi-Fi devices can connect, but they cannot use the router’s full Wi-Fi 7 capabilities or 6GHz bands unless their hardware supports them. Even Wi-Fi 7 support does not guarantee every client can use 320MHz channels, multi-link operation (MLO), or the same bands; capabilities depend on the specific device and its configuration.

The practical question is whether your current or planned clients can use features you value. If most of your devices are older and your broadband is not multi-gigabit, the router may work well as a router but deliver limited value over a less expensive model.

Mesh, security, and other features

ASUS lists AiMesh support, VPN features, triple WAN choices (10GbE, 2.5GbE, or USB tethering), gaming prioritization, and AiProtection Pro powered by Trend Micro. These are manufacturer-listed functions; the feature descriptions do not constitute an independent security certification or a guarantee of performance. RTINGS says the GT-BE98 Pro can work with AiMesh-compatible ASUS routers as access points. For a mesh extension, compatibility with the particular ASUS node and the placement between devices matter; the extra 6GHz band may be useful for backhaul, but it does not by itself ensure coverage in every home.

What are the main drawbacks?

Large and difficult to hide

RTINGS calls out the large footprint and aggressive styling, as well as the lack of wall or ceiling mounting. Plan a suitable shelf or other stable location before buying; placement still affects wireless coverage.

Not every band holds up equally at distance

Although RTINGS describes strong 6GHz range, it also reports reduced 5GHz performance at distance. Tom’s Hardware likewise found materially weaker distance performance on 2.4GHz and 5GHz than on 6GHz in its test setup. Results vary with a home’s construction and interference, so those findings should guide expectations rather than predict a specific room’s speed.

Premium hardware can go unused

The router’s high wireless class and faster ports only help when connected devices and network links can use them. Without compatible clients or multi-gigabit wired equipment, much of what distinguishes this model may have little practical effect.

Verdict

The ASUS ROG Rapture GT-BE98 Pro is a capable, feature-rich Wi-Fi 7 router for buyers who specifically need dual 6GHz radios and substantial 10GbE/2.5GbE connectivity. Its measured 6GHz throughput is impressive in Tom’s Hardware’s test setup, but the aggregate 30 Gbps claim is not a single-device speed target. If your priorities are competitive gaming, modest broadband, older clients, or an unobtrusive mesh setup, Ethernet where practical and a less expensive or simpler router may be the better fit.
