It can still serve a legacy build, but whether it is a sensible choice depends on the exact CPU and BIOS, the board’s condition, and whether its DDR3-era storage and expansion options meet your needs.
What the Rampage IV Extreme is
ASUS positioned the Rampage IV Extreme as an enthusiast board for Intel’s X79 platform and second-generation Core i7 processors. Its standard-model support list also includes selected later Core i7 and Xeon E5 v2 CPUs. This is an older LGA 2011 platform, not a modern motherboard with current-generation memory or built-in high-speed storage features.
The board’s identity is its collection of manual tuning and diagnostic tools: OC Key, UEFI controls, measurement points, BIOS Flashback, Subzero Sense, and VGA Hotwire. Those features reward owners who want to tune and monitor a system; they matter less in a basic set-and-forget PC.
Which CPUs work, and what BIOS is required?
Use ASUS’s standard Rampage IV Extreme CPU support table to check the exact processor and minimum BIOS. A shared LGA 2011 socket does not establish compatibility by itself.

| Processor group | ASUS-listed examples | Minimum BIOS listed |
|---|---|---|
| Core i7-3800 series | i7-3820, i7-3930K, i7-3960X, i7-3970X | See the individual CPU entry in ASUS’s support table |
| Later Core i7 models | i7-4820K, i7-4930K, i7-4960X | 4310 |
| Xeon E5 v2 models | Selected processors listed by ASUS | 4502 |
For an i7-4930K, ASUS specifies BIOS 4310. The same minimum applies to the listed i7-4820K and i7-4960X models. ASUS lists BIOS 4502 for the supported Xeon E5 v2 entries and cautions that some Xeon features may not be supported on X79. Check the exact entry rather than assuming that every Xeon E5 v2 CPU, or every chip with this socket, will work.
Before changing processors, identify the board precisely and determine its installed BIOS version. If the firmware is older than the required revision, plan how to update it with a supported CPU installed; do not assume a newly purchased processor will boot an outdated board.

Memory, expansion, and storage
ASUS’s detailed specification page is for the Rampage IV Extreme/Battlefield 3 edition. Treat the precise figures below as variant-specific unless you verify them against documentation for your standard-model board.
| Area | Battlefield 3 edition specification | Practical qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Memory | Eight DDR3 DIMM slots; up to 64 GB; quad-channel; rates up to DDR3-2400 when overclocked | ASUS says high-frequency support depends on the CPU and points users to its QVL. Confirm your exact board, processor, and memory kit. |
| Expansion | Five PCIe x16-shaped slots, including a gray slot operating in x8 mode, plus one PCIe x1 slot | Slot shape does not mean every slot runs at x16. Lane allocation depends on the configuration; ASUS conditions PCIe 3.0 behavior on compliant components and BIOS support. |
| Multi-GPU | Advertised NVIDIA four-way SLI and AMD four-way CrossFireX | Do not assume every combination of processor, cards, and slots reaches the maximum advertised link mode. |
| Storage | Four SATA 3 Gb/s ports, two ASMedia SATA 6 Gb/s ports, and two eSATA 6 Gb/s ports; RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10 listed | The cited specification does not establish native M.2 or NVMe support for the standard board. Verify add-in-card compatibility and boot support for your exact configuration. |
This is a DDR3 system. If reusing memory, check the module type and capacity against the correct board documentation and ASUS’s QVL; a capacity or speed figure from the Battlefield 3 edition page is not a guarantee for every Rampage IV Extreme configuration.

Overclocking features and review-era results
ASUS’s UEFI BIOS guide, dated December 15, 2011, describes options for owners seeking additional frequency. ASUS notes that most settings do not need manual adjustment for ordinary use, and warns that its overclocking profiles require active cooling of the onboard heatsinks. Higher clocks also require careful attention to voltage, cooling, and stability testing.
In its period review of the standard board, TweakTown reported loading a standard profile into Windows at 4.37 GHz on a Core i7-3960X test system, then running benchmarks at roughly 5 GHz. Those figures describe one review sample and its particular processor, memory, voltage, and cooling—not a buyer’s expected result. The review also characterized the higher-clocked setup as power hungry.

OC Key is an inline monitoring and adjustment device, but it should not be treated as universally compatible with every display setup. TweakTown reported that it worked in its test configuration while noting a limitation with its 30-inch dual-link monitor.

ASUS’s X-Socket pad is intended to let certain LGA1366 coolers mount on the LGA 2011 board. Cooler reuse is therefore possible, but it depends on the specific cooler and the required adapter being present. Check the cooler’s mounting hardware and the contents of the board listing before relying on this as a way to avoid buying a new cooler.

What to check before buying or rebuilding
Because this is legacy hardware, the board’s condition and the total cost of completing the build matter as much as its original feature set. Current used pricing, supply, failure rates, and performance against new platforms are not established by the cited sources, so there is no evidence-based universal value verdict.
- Ask for clear photos that identify the exact model and show the CPU socket and DIMM slots.
- Request evidence that the board successfully POSTs, and ask for the installed BIOS version.
- Confirm the included I/O shield, accessories, and any X-Socket cooler adapter you need.
- Ask the seller to disclose socket or slot damage and any repair history.
- Check the exact CPU support entry and minimum BIOS before buying a processor.
- Compare the complete build cost—including compatible DDR3 memory, cooler mounting, storage, and any needed expansion cards—with the alternative you would otherwise use.
Verdict
The Rampage IV Extreme remains an unusually feature-rich option for someone deliberately maintaining or assembling an X79/LGA 2011 system. Its selected CPU support, elaborate tuning tools, and multi-GPU-oriented design can be useful in that context. It is a poor fit if you need current platform features or expect a particular CPU, cooler, memory kit, storage card, or overclock to work without checking the exact board revision and configuration. Verify CPU-and-BIOS compatibility first, then judge the complete build on condition and total cost.
