You can query a CSV with plain-English questions without uploading the file by keeping both the query engine and the language model on your computer. A practical setup uses DuckDB to read and query the CSV in place, plus a local language model—such as one served by Ollama—to turn a question into SQL. A desktop tool such as DuckLocal can simplify file inspection and SQL work; a browser-based option such as SQL for Files runs DuckDB locally in the browser. Whichever route you choose, inspect the CSV, review the generated SQL, and confirm that no remote endpoint, sync, or logging service receives the file or its contents.
What does it mean to query a CSV locally?
It means the CSV is read and analyzed on your device rather than uploaded to a hosted chat or analytics service. The query engine reads the file, while a natural-language layer translates questions such as “Which categories had the highest total?” into SQL that the engine can run.
Those are separate jobs. DuckDB can query a CSV directly from its file path, so an import into a server database is not required. A language model is optional: it can write SQL from a question, but it does not replace the database engine. For a strict no-upload setup, keep both the model endpoint and the file path local, and check any surrounding app features that could send data elsewhere.

| Approach | Best suited to | Documented privacy boundary | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| DuckLocal desktop | People who want a desktop GUI for opening files, inspecting schemas, querying, charting, or exporting. | DuckLocal says it reads local files from their existing paths rather than uploading them to a DuckLocal cloud service. It also documents optional S3 access, which is not a local-file path. | Its documentation describes SQL and data-analysis features; verify whether the natural-language layer you want is available in your current setup or requires a separate assistant or integration. |
| SQL for Files | People who prefer a browser editor and want to query files with DuckDB running in the browser. | Its documentation describes a local browser-based DuckDB engine. | Browser memory and file-size limits may matter. Check the browser’s storage and privacy behavior as well as the app’s. |
| DuckDB plus Ollama | Developers who want to build and control a local natural-language-to-SQL workflow. | DuckDB and Ollama can run locally; Ollama documents a localhost API and local operation. | You must build the schema prompt, SQL validation, error handling, and interface or review flow yourself. |
A local engine alone does not provide a ChatGPT-style question box. If your chosen tool does not include natural-language translation, add a local model or write SQL yourself. No general accuracy or speed benchmark is established for these approaches, so treat the choice as a workflow and privacy decision rather than a performance ranking.
How do I prepare a CSV before asking questions?
Inspect the file’s structure before using an LLM. The model can only generate a useful query if it knows what the columns mean and how DuckDB interpreted them.
- Check the header and delimiter. Confirm that the first row is treated as column names and that commas, tabs, or other separators were detected correctly.
- Review inferred types. A date column stored as text, or a numeric column containing currency symbols or thousands separators, may not behave as expected in filters or sums.
- Understand missing values. Empty strings and SQL
NULLare not necessarily interchangeable. A filter or aggregation can produce different results depending on how missing data was parsed. - Look for duplicate or ambiguous names. Duplicate column names can complicate references, while unfamiliar abbreviations may lead the model to guess at meaning.
- Confirm whether you are querying one file or several. A single CSV, a folder, and a glob pattern represent different scopes of data. DuckDB’s Python interface supports glob patterns for multiple files, but verify the files matched before relying on the result.
DuckDB’s CSV reader supports direct file reads and options through read_csv. If parsing looks wrong, resolve the header, delimiter, or type issue before adding a natural-language layer; otherwise, the model may generate valid SQL against a misleading interpretation of the data.

Run a small deterministic query before asking a model to write one. This confirms that DuckDB can read the file and gives you a baseline for checking later results.
- Read a sample of rows. For a file named
sales.csvin the current working directory, run:SELECT * FROM 'sales.csv' LIMIT 10;Check the columns and values, especially dates and amounts. Change the path to the local file’s actual path if needed.
- Check the row count and date range. If the CSV has an
order_datecolumn, try:SELECT COUNT(*) AS rows, MIN(order_date) AS first_date, MAX(order_date) AS last_date FROM 'sales.csv';Compare the result with what you expect from the file. If the date range is missing or nonsensical, inspect how that column was parsed before using date-based questions.
- Run a known calculation. If you know a small subset’s expected total or count, query it directly and compare. This can reveal parsing mistakes or assumptions that a sample preview would not catch.
The examples use DuckDB’s documented direct-query form for CSV files. You can also use read_csv('sales.csv') in a query when that form better suits your setup.

How do I turn a plain-English question into SQL locally?
Give a local model the inspected schema and the user’s question, then require it to return a constrained, read-only SQL statement. Keep the model’s endpoint on localhost and show the SQL and its assumptions before execution.
Use the simplest desktop or browser workflow
With a desktop interface, open the local CSV, inspect its schema, and run SQL in the application. DuckLocal’s documentation describes local file querying, charts, exports, and a headless CLI. SQL for Files describes adding CSVs to a DuckDB engine in the browser, reviewing generated table names, querying, and exporting CSV or Parquet. These are ways to work with the data; confirm whether the particular natural-language feature you need is included rather than assuming that every SQL interface translates questions automatically.

Build a local model workflow
Ollama documents a local API at http://localhost:11434/api; its documentation says local requests do not need an authorization header. The following prompt contract is a useful starting point for a wrapper that sends the question and schema to that local endpoint:
You translate a user's question into one read-only DuckDB SELECT statement.
Use only the supplied table and column names.
Do not write files, install extensions, call URLs, or modify data.
Return JSON with: sql, assumptions, and clarification_needed.
Schema:
<insert inspected schema>
Question:
<user question>
The placeholders are filled in by your application with the inspected schema and the actual question. Send schema metadata rather than CSV rows when that is enough to identify the available fields. For a sensitive dataset, avoid putting sample values or personal information into the prompt unless they are necessary and you have verified that the model call remains local.
Validate the model’s response before running it
A prompt is guidance, not a security boundary. Parse the response and reject anything other than one allowed read-only query over approved tables. An SQL parser or carefully designed allow-list check is safer than relying on a text instruction alone.

- Reject data-changing statements such as
INSERT,UPDATE, andDELETE, and operations such asCOPY,CREATE,INSTALL,LOAD, andATTACH. - Reject multiple statements, unknown identifiers, network functions, and references to tables or files the user did not approve.
- Use a read-only connection and resource limits, such as row, time, and memory limits, where your wrapper supports them.
- Display the SQL, assumptions, filters, grouping, and date range for review. If the question is ambiguous, ask for clarification instead of guessing.
After validation, execute the query in DuckDB and return the result with a short explanation of what was filtered, grouped, or excluded. For a chart, make the underlying aggregation explicit so the user can reproduce the values in SQL.
Can I use Python instead of a desktop interface?
Yes. DuckDB’s Python interface can read a CSV directly and return query results as a DataFrame; the example below queries a local file without a separate import step.
import duckdb
question_sql = """SELECT category, SUM(amount) AS total
FROM 'sales.csv'
GROUP BY category
ORDER BY total DESC"""
result = duckdb.sql(question_sql).df()
print(result)
This example assumes the CSV has columns named category and amount, with amount parsed as a usable numeric value. For several files, DuckDB’s Python documentation also shows glob patterns. Check which files the pattern matches and whether they have compatible schemas before treating them as one dataset.
How can I check that nothing is uploaded?
Trace the full data path rather than relying on the phrase “local” in an app description. The CSV, SQL engine, model request, app integrations, and logs can each have separate privacy behavior.
- Keep the file path local. Use a path on the computer, not an
http://,https://, ors3://source. DuckLocal documents optional S3 access, so do not choose that route when the requirement is local processing. - Check the model endpoint. Confirm that the application points to localhost and does not fall back to a hosted model API. Ollama’s privacy policy says it does not collect, store, transmit, or access prompts, responses, model interactions, or other content processed locally; the policy was last updated in March 2026. That statement concerns local processing, not every feature or integration in every application.
- Review cloud features and connectivity requirements. If your deployment requires an offline-only guarantee, disable Ollama cloud features and verify whether the chosen model and application can operate without remote services.
- Check browser and application behavior. A browser-local query engine does not by itself establish how browser storage, extensions, sync, or telemetry work. Review the relevant settings and documentation, particularly on a shared or managed device.
- Keep sensitive content out of hosted logs. Avoid sending raw rows, prompts containing private values, or result previews to remote observability or analytics services.
DuckLocal’s documentation says local files are read at their existing locations rather than copied or uploaded to its cloud service. Treat that as a statement about the documented local-file workflow, not a guarantee that every optional feature or third-party integration is local.

What can go wrong, and how do I fix it?
Most failures come from a mismatch between the question, the CSV’s actual structure, and the SQL that was generated. Diagnose the result at the query level before assuming the model or engine is at fault.
The model invents a column
Provide the inspected schema in the prompt, constrain the model to those names, and reject unknown identifiers before execution. If the user uses a business term that differs from the header, map it explicitly or ask which field they mean.
A date question returns the wrong period
“Last quarter” is not precise unless the date column and calendar rule are clear. Ask whether the user means the previous calendar quarter or a fiscal quarter, and identify which date field should govern the filter. Check the parsed date range with a direct query before trusting the model’s filter.
A total is wrong or a numeric column will not sum
Inspect the raw values and inferred type. Currency symbols, thousands separators, mixed numbers and text, or blank strings can prevent a column from being treated consistently as numeric. Fix the parsing or conversion deliberately, then compare the query with a known subset.
The row count or grouping looks unexpected
Check whether the file contains duplicate records, whether missing values are represented as empty strings or NULL, and whether the model applied a filter you did not ask for. Ask it to show its SQL and explain the grouping; verify the result with a simpler count or a targeted sample.

A large result is slow or cannot be displayed
Local analysis still uses the computer’s CPU and memory, and a browser workflow can have additional memory limits. DuckLocal’s current product documentation, accessed October 25, 2026, states that its results grid displays up to 100,000 rows or 2,000,000 cells; its documentation says exports rerun the query to write the full result. If a grid is too large, narrow the query with filters or aggregations, or export the full result when appropriate instead of assuming that the visible grid contains every row.
The output looks plausible but answers the wrong question
SQL can be valid and still encode the wrong definition of “sales,” “customer,” or “active.” Inspect the assumptions, date column, filters, grouping, and treatment of missing values. For consequential totals, compare with a known calculation or have the person who owns the business definition confirm the query.
What is a safe end-to-end workflow?
Use this sequence whenever privacy and correctness both matter. It keeps data preparation, translation, execution, and review as distinct steps.
- Place the CSV in a local directory and choose a tool that can read it from that location.
- Inspect headers, delimiter, inferred types, nulls, and the intended file or file set.
- Run a sample query, a row count, and any relevant range checks in DuckDB.
- Send the schema and question to a local model endpoint only if you need natural-language translation.
- Require one read-only SQL statement; validate its tables, identifiers, and operations before execution.
- Show the SQL and assumptions, then run it and explain the filters and aggregation in the result.
- Verify the answer against a known calculation when possible, and check that no remote endpoint, sync, extension, or log receives sensitive content.
This architecture does not make generated answers automatically correct. It gives you a local execution path and a reviewable SQL step, so the user can see how a plain-English request became a result.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I query a CSV offline if my computer has no internet connection?
DuckDB can read a local CSV without sending it to a hosted database. For a fully disconnected setup, also make sure the model, required application components, and any integrations are already available locally and that the application does not require a remote service.
Can I ask questions across several CSV files at once?
Yes, DuckDB’s Python interface supports glob patterns for multiple files. Before querying them together, confirm that the pattern matches only the intended files and that their columns and types are compatible.
Does a local language model guarantee correct answers about my data?
No. A model can misunderstand business terminology or generate a query that is syntactically valid but semantically wrong. Reviewing the SQL and comparing important results against known calculations are still necessary.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCan I export the complete result if a local tool shows only part of it?
Some tools separate the number of rows shown in a results grid from the result written to an export. DuckLocal’s documentation says its export reruns the query to write the full result, so confirm the behavior of the specific tool and export path you use.
