PS5 system software updates are safe to install when you use Sony’s official process, but no update is guaranteed to finish without a problem. Sony warns that turning off the console during installation can damage it. And if you’re asking, “Can I roll back a PS5 update?”—Sony’s published support guidance does not offer a procedure for returning to an earlier version. Its documented options are to retry, update another way, reinstall as a last resort, or seek repair.
Are PS5 system software updates safe?
For ordinary use, updating through the PS5’s built-in system software menu or Sony’s official manual-update process is the supported approach. Sony recommends keeping system software updated and provides both automatic and manual update routes. That makes an official update the right choice for maintaining the console, but it is not a promise that every download or installation will succeed without interruption or troubleshooting.
The most important safety rule is about power: do not turn off the console while an update is installing. Sony warns that interrupting installation can damage the console. It also advises against installing system software directly before or after a power outage. Those warnings concern the installation window, when the console is applying the software—not a reason to avoid updates altogether.
Use Sony’s current instructions and update file rather than unofficial files or methods. Sony’s US guide, How to update system software on a PS5 console, explains the console-menu and USB routes and displays the latest system software information. The page’s live “latest” label should not be treated as a version number or release date unless Sony explicitly lists one.

What the safety guidance does—and does not—establish
- Sony recommends system software updates and documents supported ways to install them.
- Sony explicitly warns that interrupting installation can damage the console, and cautions against installing immediately before or after a power outage.
- Sony’s reviewed guidance does not publish a failure rate or a figure for update-caused damage. It therefore cannot establish how often a problem occurs or whether a particular console issue was caused by an update.
Can you undo or roll back a PS5 system update?
Sony’s published support instructions do not document a user-facing rollback procedure that restores the previous PS5 system software version. The recovery steps Sony describes are aimed at retrying or repairing the current installation, not choosing an earlier release. This is a statement about Sony’s documented support guidance, not a claim about every technical or service scenario that might exist.
That distinction matters if a new update is followed by a problem. Reinstalling system software is not an undo button: it reinstalls the software and deletes all data on the console. Sony’s troubleshooting flow instead starts with less disruptive steps, such as retrying a download or updating through Safe Mode or USB. If those steps fail, Sony directs users toward its support and repair path.
What should you do if a PS5 update gets stuck?
Start with the least disruptive remedy and move to more involved steps only if needed. A stalled download is different from an installation that is already applying software: Sony advises retrying a failed download, but warns not to turn off the console during installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute1. Retry a stalled download
- Open Downloads/Uploads on the PS5 and select the failed or stalled system software download.
- View the error information, then choose the option to try the download again.
- If the retry fails repeatedly, move to Sony’s manual update instructions rather than repeatedly attempting the same download.
Sony’s PS5 system software page gives the retry and manual-update guidance. If the console shows a specific error, use the information attached to that error; the cause and remedy may depend on the code.

2. Try a network or Safe Mode update
If the ordinary console-menu update fails, Sony describes updating through Safe Mode. Its Safe Mode system software update guide also recommends network troubleshooting in relevant cases, including trying a wired connection. This keeps the goal the same—installing the supported update—while changing how the console reaches or applies it.
3. Use an official update file from USB
A manual USB update is useful when the console’s normal update route is not working. It requires a compatible USB drive and Sony’s official update file; it is not the same procedure as reinstalling system software.
- On a computer, format the USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT.
- Create a folder named
PS5at the drive’s top level, then create anUPDATEfolder inside it. - Download the official PS5 update file from Sony’s system software page and save it in the
UPDATEfolder with the exact filenamePS5UPDATE.PUP. - Safely eject the drive from the computer, connect it to the PS5, and turn the console off if it is on.
- Start Safe Mode by pressing and holding the console’s power button until you hear the second beep.
- Select Update System Software, then Update from USB Storage Device, and follow the on-screen prompts.
Sony lists approximately 1.1 GB of free space as the requirement for the update file. A USB drive is needed for this manual route, not for a routine online update from the console menu. Check Sony’s page for its current file and instructions before using a file saved from an earlier attempt.
Does reinstalling PS5 system software delete games and saves?
Yes. Sony says the Safe Mode option Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) deletes all data on the console and removes the PS5 system software before reinstalling it. Sony characterizes reinstallation as a last troubleshooting step, not a normal update method. Back up what you can before proceeding; do not assume that games, captures, or saved data will remain on the console.

The word “reset” appears in more than one Safe Mode option, and the data consequences differ. Read the exact option name before confirming anything:
| Safe Mode option | Data consequence described by Sony | How to think about it |
|---|---|---|
| Repair Console Storage | Does not erase data. | A storage-repair option, not a software rollback. |
| Restore Default Settings | Does not delete stored games, apps, captures, or saved data. | Restores default settings; it is distinct from deleting console data. |
| Reset PS5 | Deletes user data. | A reset with data loss; it is not the reinstall option. |
| Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) | Deletes user data and removes PS5 system software. | A last-resort reinstall, not an option for undoing an update. |
These descriptions come from Sony’s Safe Mode options guide and its reinstallation instructions. The latter lists approximately 1.2 GB of free space for the reinstallation file. That is a separate file requirement from the approximately 1.1 GB needed for the update file.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should you reinstall or contact PlayStation support?
Reinstall only after less disruptive update troubleshooting has failed and you understand the data loss. Sony’s described sequence is to retry the download, try its manual or Safe Mode update guidance, and consider reinstallation only as a last resort. Reinstallation uses the Safe Mode option Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software); it should not be confused with Update System Software or Update from USB Storage Device.

If the official reinstall process fails or the console remains unusable, Sony points users to its support and repair path. Whether service is available, covered, or subject to a charge depends on current terms and the console’s location. How do the PS5 update recovery options compare?
The options differ in how much they change and whether they put console data at risk. Use the least disruptive route that fits the problem; do not jump to a reinstall just because it appears in Safe Mode.
| Option | When it fits | What it involves | Data impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retry download | A download is stalled or failed. | View the error in Downloads/Uploads and try again. | No reset or reinstall is involved. |
| Network or Safe Mode update | The ordinary update route fails. | Use Sony’s Safe Mode update guidance; troubleshoot the connection, including trying wired networking where relevant. | It remains an update attempt, not a reinstall. |
| Update from USB | The console cannot complete the usual update route. | Prepare a FAT32/exFAT drive with Sony’s official update file and select Update from USB Storage Device in Safe Mode. | It applies an update; it is distinct from the data-deleting reinstall. |
| Reinstall from USB | Sony’s less disruptive troubleshooting has failed. | Use the reinstall file and select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) in Safe Mode. | Deletes all console data. |
| Repair escalation | The official troubleshooting or reinstall process fails, or the console remains unusable. | Follow PlayStation support’s repair path for your location. | Eligibility and service consequences depend on local terms and the case. |
For an error such as WS-116522-7, consult Sony’s specific error-code guidance rather than assuming every update failure has the same cause. Sony’s guidance includes network and USB checks for that error; an error-specific page can narrow the next troubleshooting step.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are PS5 system update failures common?
Sony’s cited support pages do not publish a failure-rate statistic, so there is no sourced basis here for calling failures common or rare. A single failed download also does not, by itself, establish that the update damaged the console.
Could a PS5 problem after an update be unrelated to the update?
Yes. Sony’s error-specific guidance includes network checks, so an update error can involve the connection or download path rather than proving the installed software caused a hardware fault. Use the error code’s own support page to identify relevant checks.
Does Sony guarantee that every PS5 update will install successfully?
No such guarantee appears in the cited support guidance. Sony documents official update methods and gives warnings and recovery steps, but does not promise a trouble-free result in every case.
