Yes, neoclouds can run production AI workloads—but reliability depends on the design around the provider, not just its advertised uptime. Provider controls and service-level objectives are useful evidence, yet October 2026 facility incidents at CoreWeave and Crusoe show that power, cooling, and regional capacity problems can still interrupt compute, training jobs, inference, and storage. A production-ready deployment needs tested recovery, independent failure domains, and a plan for keeping or restoring service when capacity disappears.

What is a neocloud, and what does reliability mean for AI?

A neocloud is a smaller public-cloud provider focused on on-demand AI compute. The OECD names CoreWeave, Crusoe, Nebius, and Lambda Labs as examples. The category describes a provider focus; it does not by itself establish a particular level of availability, support, or resilience.

For an AI workload, reliability is not just whether a virtual machine is reachable. It includes whether GPUs remain available, jobs can recover after a node or facility failure, the control plane can schedule replacement capacity, data remains accessible, and inference stays within the service level your users expect. These are related but distinct outcomes: a GPU VM can meet a monthly uptime target while a training run still loses useful progress, or an inference service may be impaired by a storage or capacity issue even when some compute is functioning.

That distinction matters because uptime, goodput, and user-visible availability measure different things. Uptime is a service metric defined by a contract; goodput in a training test measures the productive work completed under the test conditions; user-visible availability depends on the complete system, including your application, data path, and fallback behavior. Do not treat one metric as a substitute for the others.

What evidence suggests neoclouds can support production?

Providers describe concrete operational controls, and one publishes a contractual GPU-enabled VM service-level objective. Those are meaningful inputs to an assessment, but they are not proof that every workload will remain available through a correlated regional or facility failure.

Operational controls and support

CoreWeave says its platform uses fault-tolerant infrastructure, automated fleet, rack, and node lifecycle management, and continuous health monitoring, unified through Mission Control for proactive detection and remediation. Crusoe describes automatic node swapping, proactive fault detection, real-time performance monitoring, 24/7 enterprise support, managed Kubernetes, and managed inference. Buyers should translate these descriptions into operational questions: what faults are detected automatically, what recovery action is automatic, what still requires customer intervention, and how is progress communicated during an incident?

What the Crusoe SLA actually says

Crusoe’s GPU-enabled VM SLA, effective in 2026, sets a monthly uptime SLO of at least 99.5%. Its listed service credits are:

Measured monthly uptime Credit stated in the SLA
95.00%–99.49% 10%
90.00%–94.99% 25%
Below 90.00% 100%

The SLA defines exclusions and says a financial credit is the sole and exclusive remedy. A 99.5% monthly target is not five-nines availability: in a 30-day month, 0.5% equates to approximately 3 hours and 39 minutes. That arithmetic does not predict actual downtime or guarantee that any particular interruption qualifies for a credit. The outcome depends on the contract’s measurement rules and exclusions, as well as whether your workload is spread across genuinely independent failure domains.

Read the agreement for the covered service and measurement unit, the monthly window, excluded events, claim process, credit basis, and remedies. In particular, establish whether the contract covers the specific GPU-enabled service you plan to use rather than assuming a general cloud commitment applies to every part of the AI stack.

What do the October 2026 incidents tell buyers?

They show that competent operating controls cannot eliminate correlated facility failures. The public incident updates also illustrate why recovery information, alternate capacity, and customer-side workload design belong in the same reliability assessment.

CoreWeave: US-EAST-15A

CoreWeave’s status page reported a facility power event beginning October 22, 2026. The provider said customers could experience compute unavailability, interrupted jobs, inference disruption, and degraded or unavailable object storage. After partial recovery, a renewed cooling disruption was under investigation on October 25. The reported impact crossed several layers: a facility event affected not only compute but potentially the inference and object-storage paths as well.

Crusoe: us-east2

Crusoe’s status page reported a facility issue in us-east2 beginning October 15, 2026. Affected hardware was powered down as a safety precaution. Recovery involved repairs and safety checks, while the provider moved customers to other available capacity where possible. That qualification matters: moving customers is a recovery action, not a guarantee that replacement capacity will always be available immediately or in the needed configuration.

These are specific reported incidents, not a statistical comparison of provider reliability. They do establish practical failure modes that a buyer should plan for: facility power or cooling problems, interrupted jobs, impaired inference or storage, and constrained replacement capacity. Status-page transparency is useful evidence of communication, but it does not restore a workload or independently verify your service’s health.

Can you compare neocloud goodput with hyperscaler uptime?

No: the published figures in the cited example are not interchangeable measures. A September 2026 Surf Report study sponsored by Crusoe described a 48-hour training run of Llama 3.1 70B using 24 GPUs, with failures injected. It reported goodput of 99.1% for Crusoe Cloud, 94.2% for the tested competing neocloud, and 95.9% for the tested hyperscaler.

Tested platform category Reported goodput What the figure represents
Crusoe Cloud 99.1% Surf Report’s 48-hour, 24-GPU Llama 3.1 70B run with injected failures
Tested competing neocloud 94.2% Same study and described test setup
Tested hyperscaler 95.9% Same study and described test setup

The study says production results will vary. It was sponsored by Crusoe and tested one competing neocloud, so treat it as directional evidence about that run, not a neutral industry benchmark or a forecast for your own cluster. It measures goodput under injected failures, not monthly VM uptime or end-to-end inference availability. The results also cannot support a general conclusion that neoclouds are more or less reliable than all hyperscalers.

How should you evaluate a neocloud before production?

Evaluate the service against your workload’s failure and recovery requirements. Ask for evidence at the contract, infrastructure, data, and operations layers, then test the assumptions with your own workload rather than treating a feature list as a guarantee.

1. Check the contract against the service you will run

  • Identify the exact service covered by the SLO, how uptime is measured, and whether measurement is per VM, service, or another defined unit.
  • Review exclusions, the credit threshold and basis, how to request a credit, and whether credits are the only remedy.
  • Ask what commitments, if any, cover capacity availability, support response, storage, inference endpoints, and service components outside the GPU VM SLA.

2. Map independent failure domains

  • Find out which regions and facilities can serve the workload and whether they rely on independent power and cooling systems.
  • Determine whether data replication and backups are independent of the compute facility, not merely located beside it.
  • Ask how much alternate capacity is practically movable during an incident and whether your account can use it. Provider reports of moving customers “where possible” do not establish a reserved fallback for every customer.

3. Verify recovery behavior, not only recovery claims

  • For node loss, establish whether replacement is automatic, what happens to attached data, and whether your orchestration layer notices and schedules a replacement workload.
  • For a region or facility event, confirm the recovery path, control-plane dependencies, and who initiates any move to another domain.
  • Review status communication and escalation routes, including 24/7 support availability if it is part of the service offering. Define which actions your team owns while an incident is unfolding.

4. Test the training and inference paths separately

For distributed training, validate GPU-to-GPU network behavior, checkpoint frequency, restart semantics, and the effect of a disappearing node. A checkpoint strategy should make the amount of lost work after interruption acceptable to the job owner; the right interval depends on the job’s checkpoint cost and recovery tolerance. Confirm that artifacts and checkpoints survive loss of the primary region.

For inference, test the complete request path, not only GPU health: synthetic requests should exercise the serving endpoint, required data, and dependencies your application needs. Decide what the service should do when capacity is unavailable—queue, shed load, route to an alternate deployment, or return a controlled degraded response. The suitable option depends on latency and product requirements; the provider’s VM uptime alone cannot make that decision.

5. Assess data, operations, and commercial continuity

  • Ask how storage durability and replication work, whether object storage can be affected by a compute-facility incident, and how quickly you can export data.
  • Review observability, maintenance notices, security controls, compliance evidence, and the escalation process with the teams responsible for operating the service.
  • Clarify reserved capacity, quota guarantees, price-change terms, and whether a fallback provider is technically and commercially usable. Do not count a second provider as a fallback until the workload, data, and required capacity can actually move.

What safeguards should be in place before launch?

For critical workloads, design so one provider-side failure does not automatically become a prolonged customer outage or an unrecoverable training run. These safeguards address the facility, capacity, and job-interruption modes reported in the October incidents.

  1. Use more than one failure domain. Distribute services across independent domains where the workload and available capacity allow it. A second VM in the same affected facility may not protect against a facility-level event.
  2. Checkpoint training and persist artifacts outside the primary region. Verify that a restore can access those copies without depending on the failed compute or storage path.
  3. Automate restart and requeue. Define what happens when a node disappears, a job is interrupted, or replacement capacity is delayed; make sure the system does not wait indefinitely for a resource that will not return.
  4. Keep independent backups. Test restoration, not just backup creation, and ensure the recovery copy does not share the failure dependency it is meant to protect against.
  5. Monitor service health from your side. Track synthetic inference and control-plane health in addition to provider status updates, so you can distinguish a provider incident from an application or integration failure.
  6. Define failover or degraded mode. Specify the trigger, responsible operator, data-sync requirements, and user-facing behavior for switching capacity or reducing service.
  7. Run a failure-injection exercise before committing critical traffic. Simulate the loss of a node and test the recovery procedure; for workloads designed to span facilities or regions, exercise those recovery assumptions as well.

A single-region, single-provider deployment that assumes a published SLO guarantees end-to-end availability is not a robust production design. Neoclouds are production-capable when the buyer builds and tests workload-level resilience around the provider’s service.

Are neoclouds cheaper but less reliable than AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud?

The evidence here does not establish a general price or reliability ranking between neoclouds and those hyperscalers. The described Surf Report test compares one tested neocloud, one tested hyperscaler, and Crusoe under one sponsored, injected-failure training scenario; it cannot establish provider-wide performance or a cost-versus-reliability trade-off.

Compare the actual offer and architecture you can procure: total workload cost, the capacity you can obtain, applicable contractual commitments, data-transfer and recovery needs, support, and your own failover design. A lower quoted compute rate, if available in a particular offer, is not by itself evidence that equivalent production capacity or recovery is included.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an uptime SLA guarantee that my GPU capacity will be available whenever I need it?

Not necessarily. An uptime SLO is defined by the particular contract and measurement rules; capacity commitments, exclusions, and remedies must be checked separately for the service and account you plan to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I look for in a cloud provider’s incident history?

Look beyond the incident count: note which components failed, how broadly customers were affected, what recovery actions were taken, and whether the status updates explain uncertainty and progress. Then use those failure modes to test your own recovery plan rather than treating a public status page as a prediction of future uptime.

How do I know whether my AI workload can move to a fallback provider?

A practical portability check is to restore the model, data, and deployment configuration in the alternate environment and run a representative workload there. Until that exercise succeeds with usable capacity and acceptable behavior, a named fallback is only a plan, not a demonstrated recovery path.
