No—not in an absolute sense. ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini all offer privacy controls, but each service retains some conversation data for operating the product, safety, legal obligations, quality review, or feedback. Whether a chat is used to improve models depends on the product, account settings, and what you do after sending it.
The safest assumption is that a consumer chatbot is a confidential service with limited, conditional access—not a private vault. Do not paste passwords, authentication codes, private keys, unreleased confidential documents, or regulated information that could harm you if a reviewer or service provider saw it.
What “private” means for an AI chatbot
Privacy has several separate questions, and a “yes” to one does not answer the others:
- Storage: Does the provider keep a copy, and for how long?
- Model improvement: Can the conversation be used to train or improve models?
- Human access: Can employees or contracted reviewers inspect it for safety, support, quality, or feedback?
- Deletion: Does deleting the chat remove every copy, including copies already reviewed or sent to connected services?
- Account scope: Do the rules apply to a consumer account, a business workspace, an API project, or an administrator-managed account?
All three services document circumstances in which content may be accessed or retained. Temporary, incognito, or opt-out modes reduce some uses; they do not promise zero retention, zero human access, or erasure from every downstream system.

ChatGPT: what OpenAI retains and what you can control
Consumer chats may be used to improve models unless you opt out
OpenAI’s US Privacy Policy says consumer content may be used to improve services, including training models. For personal Free, Plus, and Pro accounts, the control is named “Improve the model for everyone.” Turn that control off in ChatGPT settings and new conversations are not used to train OpenAI models.
The setting is forward-looking. It changes treatment of new chats; it is not a promise that material already reviewed, de-identified, or incorporated into systems will be removed. Check the setting again after major product or policy changes because labels and defaults can change.
Temporary Chat limits history and model-improvement use
Temporary Chat does not appear in chat history, does not create memories, and is not used to improve models while it is temporary. OpenAI may nevertheless retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety. That makes Temporary Chat useful for a one-off question, but it is not equivalent to instant deletion or a guarantee that no person or service provider can access the content.

OpenAI generally removes deleted chats within 30 days. The policy describes longer retention where necessary for legal obligations, safety, security, financial-record requirements, or data that has already been de-identified. Therefore, deleting a conversation removes it from the normal account experience without proving that every derivative or legally retained copy has disappeared.

This warning is the practical boundary for consumer use. If exposure would create financial, legal, safety, employment, or personal risk, do not put the information into a consumer ChatGPT conversation, even with history or training controls changed.
Claude: opt-in improvement, with safety exceptions
When Claude can use chats to improve models
Anthropic’s consumer policy, dated March 16, 2026, says chats and coding sessions are used to improve Claude when the user allows that use. Anthropic also identifies exceptions: a conversation flagged for safety review may be used, and another explicit opt-in—such as a tester program—can authorize use.

“We will use your chats and coding sessions (including to improve our models) if you choose to allow us to use your chats and coding sessions to improve Claude.”
That opt-in model is clearer than a consumer setting that shares by default, but it still does not mean that every conversation is inaccessible to people. Safety review and other explicitly authorized programs remain separate pathways.
Deletion timing
When you delete a Claude conversation, it disappears from chat history immediately. Anthropic says backend storage is removed within 30 days for an ordinary deleted conversation.

If you have allowed improvement use, Anthropic may retain related data in de-identified model-training pipelines for up to five years. The five-year period is not the normal deletion window; it is a separate consequence of permitting improvement use. Turning improvement off does not retroactively pull material that has already entered such a pipeline.
Using Claude for a sensitive one-off question
Use Claude’s improvement opt-out or incognito-style option before entering the question, and keep the prompt free of identifiers and secrets. A mode that prevents ordinary improvement use still cannot guarantee that a safety-flagged message will never be reviewed.
Gemini: Keep Activity, Temporary Chat, and reviewer retention
Keep Activity is the adult default
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, updated October 13, 2026, says Keep Activity is on by default for adults. With it enabled, chats and shared content are saved in Gemini Apps Activity and can be used to provide, develop, and improve Google services, including training generative-AI models.
The default auto-delete period for Gemini Apps Activity is 18 months. Google lets users change that period to 3 months, 36 months, or indefinite retention. Auto-delete is a schedule for activity data; it does not erase copies that have already moved into other systems.
Human review and the three-year window
Google says a subset of Gemini chats is reviewed by human reviewers and trained service providers. Those reviewed chats are disconnected from the user’s account and retained for up to three years. Disconnecting them from the account means the reviewer copy is no longer directly tied to the account, not that it disappears immediately.

Turning Keep Activity off or using Temporary Chat
Turning Keep Activity off, or using Temporary Chat, stops future chats from appearing in Gemini Apps Activity and stops model-training use unless you submit feedback. Google still retains those chats with the account for up to 72 hours to provide the service and protect users.
Feedback changes the analysis: feedback-associated conversations can be reviewed and retained for up to three years. Deleting Gemini activity also does not delete copies already reviewed by service providers or data held by connected Google services.

Which chatbot is safest for sensitive information?
There is no universal “most private” winner for every country, plan, account type, and connected service. The defensible comparison is about which control matches your situation:
Choose Claude when opt-in improvement is your main concern
Claude has the clearest consumer choice to allow model-improvement use. It is still subject to safety-review exceptions, and allowing improvement can create a separate de-identified retention period of up to five years.

Choose ChatGPT when you want a direct training toggle and Temporary Chat
ChatGPT offers a named “Improve the model for everyone” control and a Temporary Chat mode that avoids history and memory and is not used for model improvement while temporary. The up-to-30-day safety-retention rule and deletion exceptions still apply.
Choose Gemini when its activity controls fit your workflow
Gemini provides Keep Activity, Temporary Chat, configurable auto-delete, and a short operational-retention period when activity is off. Its documentation is also the clearest about reviewer-related retention: reviewed or feedback-associated material can remain for up to three years.
For highly sensitive data, choose none of them
If a prompt contains a password, one-time authentication code, private cryptographic key, patient record, unreleased acquisition document, or another secret whose disclosure would cause harm, keep it out of consumer chatbots. Redact names, account numbers, exact locations, and unique identifiers before asking for general help.
How to ask a sensitive question with less exposure
- Classify the information. Remove credentials, private keys, identity numbers, health details, customer records, and confidential business material. Replace them with labels such as
[customer]or[contract clause]. - Select the least-retentive available mode before typing. In ChatGPT, use Temporary Chat or turn off “Improve the model for everyone.” In Claude, use the improvement opt-out or incognito-style option. In Gemini, use Temporary Chat or turn Keep Activity off.
- Do not submit feedback on the sensitive conversation. Gemini states that feedback-associated chats can enter a separate review and retention path; other providers may also use feedback for service improvement.
- Check connected systems. Google-connected apps, plugins, workspace administrators, and external integrations may receive or retain data under separate rules.
- Delete the conversation afterward, where appropriate. Deletion removes the normal chat record but does not override legal, safety, de-identification, reviewer, or connected-service retention.
- Recheck settings periodically. Defaults, feature names, and retention terms are changeable, so verify the control immediately before using it for a sensitive task.
Common misunderstandings
“I turned off training, so the chat is private.”
Training opt-outs address model-improvement use. They do not necessarily stop operational storage, safety review, support access, legal retention, or copies already de-identified and incorporated into systems.
“Temporary means no copy exists.”
Temporary modes limit history and certain uses, but each provider still describes a short safety or service-retention period. Temporary is a risk-reduction feature, not a zero-retention guarantee.
“Deleting the chat deletes every copy.”
Deletion targets the ordinary account record. Reviewed copies, feedback records, de-identified training data, legally retained material, and data held by connected services can follow different schedules.
“Business and API privacy works the same way.”
Consumer settings do not automatically describe business workspaces, API projects, or administrator-managed accounts. Before sending company or regulated data, read the terms for the exact plan, region, and integration you use.

Bottom line
ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini are conditionally private, not absolutely private. Use the strongest available opt-out or temporary mode, avoid secrets entirely, and treat every consumer conversation as potentially retainable and reviewable. Claude offers the clearest consumer opt-in for model improvement; ChatGPT combines a direct training toggle with Temporary Chat; Gemini offers Temporary Chat and Keep Activity controls but documents the broadest reviewer-retention period, up to three years. Those distinctions help you reduce exposure, but none turns a consumer chatbot into a confidential vault.
