No Apple, Google, or Amazon device is exempt simply because of its brand. Canada’s current counter-tariff rules turn on a product’s country of origin and tariff classification. Smartphones are listed under tariff item 8517.13.00 at a 50% surtax rate effective September 8, 2026, but that does not mean every phone sold in Canada is subject to the surtax.
Which Apple, Google, and Amazon devices are not affected by Canadian tariffs?
There is no brand-wide answer. The current Canadian order applies to qualifying goods that originate in the United States and fall under tariff items in its schedules. A device’s brand owner, design location, or place of sale does not by itself establish whether that device meets those conditions.
The government’s consolidated list covers products and tariff classifications, not brands or individual retail models. The available evidence does not establish that any particular Apple, Google, or Amazon device is categorically unaffected—or categorically subject to the surtax.
What is established for each brand
| Brand | What the available information establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Apple | Apple describes its products as designed in California and built around the world; its supply-chain page identifies iPhone assembly in mainland China. | The origin marking or tariff classification of every iPhone or other Apple device imported into Canada. |
| The tariff list does not provide brand-specific exemptions. | The Canadian origin marking or tariff treatment of a particular Pixel or other Google device. | |
| Amazon | The tariff list does not provide brand-specific exemptions. | The Canadian origin marking or tariff treatment of a particular Amazon consumer device. |
Apple’s general supply-chain information cannot determine the customs origin of every Canadian retail unit. Likewise, a U.S. headquarters or design location is not enough to establish that a device originated in the United States.

Are smartphones included in Canada’s tariffs?
Yes. In the consolidated Canadian counter-tariff list currently effective from September 8, 2026, smartphones appear under tariff item 8517.13.00 with a listed surtax rate of 50%. The new targeted measures took effect at 12:01 a.m. that day and cover $27.6 billion in U.S. imports, according to the Government of Canada.
The 50% figure is the listed surtax rate for the tariff item; it is not a prediction that a phone’s Canadian retail price will rise by 50%. The tariff sources do not establish the final price a retailer will charge, or account for ordinary duties, taxes, shipping, and other costs on a specific purchase.

How to check a particular device
For a specific phone, tablet, speaker, streaming device, or other product, check the exact unit and import circumstances rather than relying on its brand name or a general product description.
- Check the unit’s country-of-origin marking. Use the marking on the device or its packaging, or ask the seller or importer for documentation. A brand’s headquarters, design location, or general manufacturing footprint is not a substitute for the unit’s origin marking.
- Check the tariff classification. Confirm the product’s tariff item with the seller or importer. For smartphones, compare it with item 8517.13.00 in the current Canadian list; do not assume every connected device belongs to that classification.
- Compare both facts with the current order. The surtax applies when goods originate in the United States and are classified under an item listed in the order’s schedules, subject to applicable exceptions. The order defines U.S. origin by reference to Canada’s CUSMA country-of-origin marking regulations.
- Ask about the import date and any exception. The order includes exceptions, including for certain goods that were in transit when it came into force. A seller or importer can confirm whether an exception applies to a particular shipment.
Canada’s consolidated list identifies covered U.S. products, tariff items, effective dates, and rates. Because those details can change, use the current list and legal order rather than an older summary when checking a purchase.

Does the 2025 tariff removal mean devices are exempt now?
No. Canada removed counter-tariffs on most U.S. imports effective September 1, 2025, while measures on steel, aluminum, and autos remained at that point. That earlier change does not replace the targeted measures in the consolidated list effective September 8, 2026. For a current device purchase, the later list and order are the relevant references.
