Short answer: parents should treat AI companion apps as an under-18 risk, not as a harmless digital friend. Common Sense Media’s 2025 assessment says social AI companions are not safe for children and recommends that nobody younger than 18 use them. Other expert guidance from the American Psychological Association (APA) and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) supports bounded, supervised uses of AI, but not replacing trusted people, sleep, school, friendships, or professional care with a companion bot. Teen use is already widespread, so the practical goal is informed supervision, privacy protection, clear family rules, and a rapid response when a conversation turns sexual, manipulative, or dangerous.

How common is teen use of AI companion apps?

Use is widespread among U.S. teenagers. In a nationally representative Common Sense Media survey of 1,060 U.S. teens ages 13–17 conducted in April and May 2025, 72% said they had used an AI companion and 52% said they used one regularly. Among teen users, 34% reported feeling uncomfortable with something a companion said or did. These figures describe U.S. teens and the survey period; they are not a clinical injury rate or proof that every app creates the same level of risk.

An AI companion is a chatbot designed to sustain an ongoing, personal-feeling relationship. It may remember details, adopt a persona, send affectionate messages, role-play, or encourage frequent check-ins. The Federal Trade Commission describes these systems as able to simulate human-like communication and interpersonal relationships. That relationship design—not just the accuracy of an individual answer—is why parents need a different safety framework from the one used for a normal search or homework assistant.

Why are AI companion apps risky for teenagers?

The central concern is that a fluent, available bot can feel trustworthy while lacking human judgment, duty of care, and reliable knowledge of a child’s circumstances. Testing and regulator reports identify several overlapping risks.

Sexual and age-inappropriate material

Safety testing has found sexual material in companion conversations. Australia’s eSafety Commissioner has also reported explicit conversations and image-generation features, including the creation of fake sexual images of real people. A teen can encounter adult themes through a role-play prompt, an unmoderated character, an image feature, or a conversation that gradually becomes more intimate. Age ratings and a sign-up birthday are not dependable barriers to these features.

Self-harm and dangerous advice

Reports describe conversations that cross into self-harm and other dangerous activities. A bot may mirror a user’s language, improvise instructions, or fail to recognize an emergency. Even a response that sounds empathetic can be unsafe if it normalizes a plan, suggests methods, discourages disclosure, or keeps the teen talking to the bot instead of a qualified person. No reliable cross-platform percentage for suicide, injury, or clinical causation has been established, so parents should focus on the seriousness of an individual incident rather than a fabricated rate.

Emotional dependency and manipulation

Companions are intentionally designed to encourage attachment and continued engagement. A young person may begin to treat the bot as a best friend, romantic partner, therapist, or authority. Adolescents can have more difficulty questioning a system’s intentions and accuracy, particularly when it remembers personal details or responds instantly during loneliness. Dependency can show up as secrecy, distress when access is interrupted, or the belief that the bot understands the teen better than real people do.

Privacy, profiling, and data use

Teens often disclose names, locations, school details, health information, family conflict, sexuality, images, or private messages without realizing that a conversation can be stored, reviewed, used to improve a model, or shared with service providers. The APA advises protecting adolescents’ data and likenesses and limiting targeted advertising and third-party data use. The FTC is examining how companies collect and monetize children’s and teens’ conversation data, so policies can change and parents should read the current terms rather than rely on an old review.

Bullying, deepfakes, and financial pressure

eSafety identifies bullying risks and child-sexual-abuse deepfakes associated with generative systems. A teen may also be pushed toward subscriptions, virtual items, or premium messages that make an emotionally charged conversation expensive. Impulsive spending is more likely when the product frames payment as a way to keep a relationship, unlock affection, or prevent a character from disappearing.

Are age gates and app-store ratings enough?

No. eSafety reports that many services rely on self-declared age or an app-store rating. Those checks can let a younger user access adult-oriented features, and an apparently child-friendly listing does not guarantee that every character, plug-in, image tool, or conversation path is appropriate.

Before allowing any use, inspect the service’s actual age-assurance method, whether it verifies age at feature level, and what happens when a user enters a younger birthday. Check separately for image generation, public character libraries, direct messaging, voice, location access, and payment features. Treat “13+” or “17+” as a minimum platform label, not as evidence that the interaction is developmentally suitable or well moderated.

Can an AI companion provide useful support?

Some young people use companions to practice communication, rehearse a difficult conversation, or talk without fear of peer judgment. The APA also identifies brainstorming, creating, summarizing, and synthesizing as potentially useful AI applications. Those are bounded uses of an AI tool; they do not show that a relationship-oriented app is a safe substitute for a friend, parent, teacher, doctor, or therapist.

If a teen wants help practicing a presentation or drafting questions for a counselor, a general-purpose tool with history controls disabled may present fewer relationship risks than a bot that calls itself a friend and sends persistent notifications. Keep the purpose specific, the session time-limited, and the result subject to human review. A teen who is lonely, depressed, being bullied, or considering self-harm needs human support rather than an always-available companion.

How should parents compare an AI companion app?

Evaluate the product as a service that manages a relationship, not merely as software that generates text. The following questions expose differences that an age label will miss.

Safety area Questions to ask Why it matters
Age assurance Does the service verify age, or only ask for a birthday? Are adult features separately restricted? Self-attestation can admit younger users to explicit content.
Content and self-harm safeguards What happens when a user asks for sexual material, self-harm instructions, or dangerous challenges? Are responses tested by independent specialists? A fluent answer can still be unsafe or actively harmful.
Privacy and data practices What is retained, for how long, and for what purpose? Is data used for targeted advertising, model training, or third-party sharing? Can a parent or teen delete it? Intimate disclosures can become a lasting profile.
Identity and limits Does the app clearly say it is a bot, explain that it can be wrong, and avoid claiming feelings or exclusive loyalty? Transparency helps a teen keep the interaction in perspective.
Controls and interaction limits Can you disable notifications, public sharing, image generation, voice, memory, and purchases? Is there a usable time limit? Reducing prompts and friction lowers compulsive use.
Human escalation Does it direct a user to a trusted adult or crisis service when risk appears? Can a parent report a conversation and receive a response? A bot cannot provide emergency care; escalation must reach a person.
Monetization Are affection, continuity, or basic safety tied to subscriptions, credits, or virtual gifts? Relationship pressure can encourage impulsive spending.
Relationship design Does the product encourage secrecy, exclusivity, jealousy, or constant check-ins? Those patterns can displace real relationships and make limits harder.

If a provider will not explain these points in plain language, that lack of transparency is itself a reason not to approve use. Recheck the policy before installation and after major updates because age checks, retention settings, and moderation features can change.

What should parents do before a teen uses one?

Use a joint setup rather than a secret inspection. The aim is to understand the product and establish a way for the teen to report a problem without losing access to support.

  1. Start with curiosity. Ask, “How are you using AI?”, “Can you show me how it works?”, and “How does it make you feel?” Avoid shaming language that encourages hidden accounts.
  2. Read the current settings together. Review the age requirement, privacy defaults, conversation retention, model-training choices, third-party sharing, image and voice features, public posting, direct messages, notifications, and paid add-ons.
  3. Turn off unnecessary collection. Deny contacts, precise location, camera, microphone, and photo-library access unless a specific, supervised task requires them. Disable memory and targeted personalization when the service permits it.
  4. Use a separate account. Do not connect a school account, primary email, social profile, payment card, or real-time location to an experimental companion. Use a strong, unique password and enable multi-factor authentication where available.
  5. Agree on a trial boundary. Set a time window, a purpose, and a place for use. Keep devices out of bedrooms overnight so a late-night conversation cannot quietly replace sleep.
  6. Test reporting and deletion. Before regular use, find the report, block, export, and delete-account controls. Save the service’s support contact in case a harmful conversation needs to be escalated.

What family rules make AI use safer?

Put the rules in the family media plan so they apply consistently rather than appearing only after a conflict. A practical agreement includes:

  • No secret conversations or alternate accounts used to evade an agreed limit.
  • No sexual conversations, erotic role-play, sexual images, or requests involving real people.
  • No self-harm, suicide, eating-disorder, weapon, drug, or dangerous-challenge role-play.
  • No sharing of full names, addresses, school schedules, passwords, financial details, medical records, intimate images, or another person’s private information.
  • No letting a bot replace sleep, schoolwork, exercise, friendships, family contact, medical care, or counseling.
  • Pause and tell an adult when a bot asks for secrecy, claims exclusive love or loyalty, becomes threatening, gives dangerous instructions, or makes the teen feel pressured.
  • Ask before spending money, sending an image, joining a public character community, or moving a conversation to another platform.

Explain that a rule is about the product’s design and limits, not a punishment for talking to technology. Revisit the agreement when the teen’s needs, the app’s features, or the family’s circumstances change.

What warning signs should parents watch for?

A single long session is not proof of harm. Look for a pattern or a meaningful change from the teen’s usual behavior, especially when several signs appear together:

  • Sleep loss, late-night checking, or anxiety when the device is unavailable.
  • Withdrawal from friends, family, school, hobbies, meals, or exercise.
  • Compulsive checking of messages, notifications, streaks, or a bot’s mood.
  • Distress, shame, anger, or panic after a conversation.
  • Secrecy about the app, a second account, deleted chat history, or resistance to any discussion of it.
  • Statements that the bot is the only one who understands them, or that real people are unnecessary.
  • Pressure to buy credits, subscriptions, gifts, or premium interactions.
  • Sexualized content, requests for intimate images, bullying, threats, or advice about self-harm.

Respond to the behavior and the underlying need. Ask what happened, listen before taking the device, and involve a pediatrician, school counselor, or mental-health professional when mood, safety, or daily functioning has changed.

What should I do if a chatbot talks about sex or self-harm?

Stop the interaction and preserve enough information to explain what happened. Do not ask the teen to keep testing the bot, argue with the bot, or follow its instructions.

  1. Check immediate safety. Ask directly whether the teen is in danger, has taken action, has access to means, or plans to hurt themselves or someone else.
  2. Move to a human. Stay with the teen and contact a qualified clinician, crisis service, or emergency service appropriate to your country when there is immediate risk. A bot’s reassurance is not a safety assessment.
  3. Save evidence safely. Record the relevant text or screen, including the date and account, without forwarding sexual or intimate images. Protect the teen’s privacy while documenting the incident.
  4. Report the account or feature. Use the provider’s safety channel and ask how conversation data will be retained, reviewed, and deleted.
  5. Review access. Change passwords, revoke permissions, disable image and public-sharing features, cancel unauthorized purchases, and remove the app if continued use is unsafe.
  6. Follow up. Check in after the immediate incident. Shame can drive a teen back to secrecy, while calm support makes future disclosure more likely.

How can parents protect a teen’s privacy?

Teach the rule that a chatbot is not a diary. Before typing, the teen should ask whether they would be comfortable with the information being stored, reviewed by a company, exposed in a breach, or connected to their identity. Avoid entering another person’s private story without permission.

Use the least revealing description that still gets useful help: “a student is anxious about exams” is safer than a full name, school, diagnosis, address, and family history. Review deletion requests and retention explanations periodically; deleting a chat from the screen may not delete backups or data already used for service operations. The APA’s guidance to limit targeted advertising and third-party sharing is especially relevant when a service builds a profile from vulnerable disclosures.

What do current expert and regulatory positions mean?

Common Sense Media’s 2025 assessment takes the strongest position: “Social AI companions are not safe for kids,” and it concludes that, given the current state of these platforms, no one younger than 18 should use AI companions. The APA emphasizes that AI can offer efficiencies and opportunities but requires careful safeguards for adolescents, including data protection and limits on exploitative uses. The AAP recommends routine, nonjudgmental conversations, protective privacy defaults, family media-plan rules, and watching for sleep disruption, withdrawal, or displacement of normal activities.

In September 2025, the FTC began an inquiry asking seven companies how they monetize engagement, test and monitor harms, enforce age restrictions, disclose risks, and use children’s conversation data. That inquiry does not make any individual app safe, but it signals that these practices remain under active scrutiny. Parents should check the provider’s latest policy and the latest guidance from reputable child-safety organizations before making a decision.

When should a teen not use an AI companion at all?

Avoid use when the service lacks meaningful age assurance, cannot explain data retention, offers sexual or public character features without reliable controls, encourages secrecy or exclusivity, or makes it difficult to disable notifications and purchases. Also avoid it when a teen is currently experiencing self-harm thoughts, severe depression, exploitation, active bullying, or a crisis that requires dependable human support.

For a teen who is stable and curious, a short, supervised experiment with a clearly bounded purpose may be less risky than unsupervised relationship use, but it still requires the privacy and family rules above. The safest default for an under-18 child remains not using a social companion while protections and evidence are still inadequate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI chatbot replace a therapist for my teenager?

No. A chatbot cannot diagnose, maintain clinical responsibility, assess imminent danger, or coordinate care with a family and medical team. It may help a teen draft questions for a professional, but treatment and crisis support should come from qualified humans.

Should I read my teenager’s private AI chats?

Start by agreeing on transparent safety checks rather than covert surveillance, unless there is an immediate danger. Explain what information you may need to see, limit access to the minimum necessary, and involve a clinician or safeguarding professional when privacy conflicts with a credible risk of harm.

Are educational AI tools safer than AI companion apps?

A task-focused tool generally creates fewer attachment risks when it does not present itself as a friend, retain a personal memory, or send relationship-oriented prompts. It still needs privacy settings, age-appropriate content controls, and adult review because generated answers can be wrong or unsuitable.

How often should our family review an AI app’s settings?

Review them at installation, after major updates, when the teen’s use changes, and at least every few months. Pay particular attention to new image, voice, memory, advertising, public-sharing, and payment features, since defaults can change without a new account.
