There is no universal yes-or-no rule for using an AI chatbot in schoolwork. The syllabus, assignment sheet, exam conditions, teacher or professor, and school policy decide what is permitted. If the instructions are silent or ambiguous, ask the instructor before opening a chatbot; silence is not permission. Where use is allowed, stay within the stated boundary, disclose or cite the tool as required, verify every claim, protect personal information, and submit work you understand well enough to explain. Using a chatbot without permission, or presenting generated work as your own, can lead to an academic-integrity or scholastic-dishonesty process.
Who decides whether AI is allowed in an assignment?
Permission is set at the assignment and instructor level, not by the chatbot itself. A school may publish a broad policy, but an individual teacher can impose a stricter rule for a particular essay, lab report, quiz, take-home test, or project. Assessment conditions can also change the answer: a supervised assessment may prohibit tools that are acceptable in an open, unsupervised task.
Read all of the documents that govern the work:
- the course syllabus and any AI or academic-integrity policy;
- the assignment sheet, rubric, and submission instructions;
- exam or quiz rules, including whether the assessment is supervised;
- announcements or written directions from the instructor; and
- school or district rules that apply to the class.
Institutional policies illustrate why a general internet answer is unsafe. Chicago Public Schools states, “Students must obtain permission from their teacher before using GenAI tools for academic work.” The University of Minnesota Duluth says, “Student use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) as part of course work requires written instructor permission.” UMass Amherst similarly says, “Students cannot use Generative AI … to complete any academic work without instructor permission.” Simon Fraser University puts the practical rule plainly: “If you are unsure, you must not assume that using generative AI is permitted.”
Can I use ChatGPT or another chatbot for homework?
Only for the functions your instructor permits. “Homework” is not one category: asking for an explanation, generating a paragraph, correcting grammar, and producing a final answer carry different policy implications.

| Planned use | How policies commonly treat it | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Tutoring or explanation | May be allowed when the chatbot explains a concept rather than completing the task. | Whether you may paste the problem, and whether you must record or disclose the interaction. |
| Brainstorming or outlining | May be allowed with limits on how much of the final work comes from the tool. | Whether ideas, outlines, prompts, or outputs must be saved and cited. |
| Practice questions | Often compatible with studying, but a teacher may restrict tools during graded preparation. | Whether generated questions or answers can appear in submitted work. |
| Grammar or style help | Limited editing may be allowed; substantial rewriting can cross into unauthorized authorship. | Which corrections are acceptable and whether the original text must be retained. |
| Research assistance | May be restricted because chatbots can produce inaccurate or biased information. | Which sources you must consult and how factual claims must be checked. |
| Drafting, rewriting, or answer generation | Frequently prohibited when the generated language or solution is submitted as the student’s work. | Whether any generated text, code, calculations, or solution steps are expressly barred. |
The same tool can therefore be acceptable in one stage and forbidden in another. A policy that permits brainstorming does not automatically permit asking the chatbot to turn the outline into a polished essay.
What should I do when the syllabus says nothing about AI?
Ask the instructor before using the chatbot for the assignment. Do not infer permission from a missing sentence: several institutional policies explicitly tell students to seek permission or avoid assumptions when the rule is unclear.
- Collect the exact rule. Check the syllabus, assignment page, exam instructions, and school policy for terms such as “generative AI,” “automated writing,” “outside assistance,” or “unauthorized aid.”
- Describe the proposed use precisely. Say whether you want tutoring, brainstorming, grammar correction, source discovery, drafting, rewriting, or answer generation. “Can I use AI?” is less useful than “May I ask a chatbot to suggest three thesis ideas, then write the essay myself?”
- Ask in a recordable channel. Use the learning platform, school email, or another method that preserves the answer. Keep the reply with your assignment materials.
- Follow any conditions. The instructor may allow one function but ban another, require a citation, limit the assessment setting, or ask you to retain prompts and outputs.
- Wait for clarification. If no answer arrives before the deadline, use a non-AI method rather than treating silence as approval.
A short message can be specific: “For the history essay due Friday, may I use a chatbot only to brainstorm questions and check grammar? If yes, should I disclose the prompts or attach the output?”
Is using AI on an essay cheating?
It can be academic misconduct when the use is unauthorized or when generated work is passed off as the student’s own. The label depends on the governing rule and the actual use, not simply on the fact that software was involved.

Generating an essay, replacing your analysis with chatbot prose, or submitting an answer you cannot explain may violate an assignment that requires independent work. By contrast, an instructor may authorize brainstorming or limited editing if you follow the stated boundaries. Keep the distinction visible: permission for one narrow task is not permission for all AI assistance.
Unauthorized use can trigger an academic-integrity or scholastic-dishonesty procedure. There is no standard penalty amount across schools, and authoritative policies do not establish a universal percentage of assignments that allow chatbots. Possible outcomes, if a rule is alleged to have been broken, are controlled by the institution’s process and the facts of the case; do not assume a particular grade, suspension, or other sanction.
Do I have to tell my teacher I used a chatbot?
If the instructor, syllabus, school policy, or required style guide asks for disclosure or citation, yes. Even when a rule merely allows AI, it may require you to identify the tool, describe what it did, cite a conversation, or preserve prompts and outputs.
Before submitting, check four details:
- What must be disclosed: the tool name, date, prompts, outputs, the parts used, or all of these.
- Where it belongs: a note in the assignment, a bibliography or footnote, an appendix, a learning-platform form, or a separate log.
- Which format applies: the instructor’s template or the designated citation style takes precedence over a generic internet example.
- What evidence to retain: save the conversation or a contemporaneous record if the course requires it.
Institutional wording varies. The University of Sydney says, “You can use AI in open (unsupervised) assessments,” while that permission still leaves room for a course-specific disclosure rule. Treat an open assessment as a setting designation, not as a blanket license to omit attribution.

How do I verify an AI answer before using it?
Read every output as an unverified draft. Chatbots can be wrong, incomplete, or biased, and Washington guidance specifically tells students to evaluate accuracy and bias.
- Check the central claim. Find it in the textbook, assigned reading, official data, or another source your instructor accepts.
- Inspect names, dates, quotations, calculations, and citations. A fluent answer can still contain an invented source or a subtly altered fact.
- Compare competing explanations. For a disputed or interpretive topic, look for evidence and note where the chatbot expresses uncertainty or leaves out context.
- Rework the reasoning yourself. Solve a problem, explain a concept aloud, or outline the argument without looking at the output. If you cannot defend a step, do not submit it.
- Keep the required record. If the course asks for prompts, outputs, or a reflection on verification, retain them in the requested format.
Verification is your responsibility even when the tool was permitted. The University of New England states, “When AI contributes to your work, you remain accountable for its accuracy, integrity, and originality.”
What information should never go into a public chatbot?
Remove personal, confidential, or identifiable student information before using an external tool. Do not paste a classmate’s name and accommodation details, a student’s identification number, private contact information, unpublished school records, confidential research, or copyrighted material that you are not authorized to upload.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse an institution-approved tool when one is specified, and check whether the school offers an opt-out procedure or other data-handling instructions. Chicago Public Schools says schools should communicate classroom AI tools and provide opt-out procedures for families. A permission to use AI for an assignment does not override privacy, confidentiality, or copyright rules.

Does the assessment setting change the answer?
Yes. Policies may distinguish open, unsupervised work from supervised exams or quizzes. Confirm the setting and the permitted tools for each assessment rather than carrying a permission from one task into another.
| Assessment setting | Questions to answer before using AI | Record or disclosure issues |
|---|---|---|
| Open or unsupervised assessment | Which functions are allowed, and are there course-specific limits? | Whether prompts, outputs, or a citation are required. |
| Supervised exam or quiz | Are chatbots, phones, browser tabs, or outside materials prohibited? | Follow the proctor’s instructions even if another assignment permits AI. |
| Take-home paper or project | May AI assist with planning, editing, research, code, or calculations? | Whether an AI-use statement, appendix, or saved conversation is required. |
The University of Sydney’s statement about open assessments demonstrates that an institution can permit AI in one assessment mode while leaving other modes governed by separate rules. Your instructor’s directions for the specific task control.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can parents do when a student wants to use AI?
Parents can support compliance without writing the assignment or making the permission decision for the teacher. Start by asking the student to show the syllabus, assignment sheet, and any school policy.

What if the teacher says no?
Do not use the chatbot for that assignment, even if another class allows it. Ask whether non-generative accessibility or study support is permitted, and request an approved alternative if you need help understanding the material.
If you already used a chatbot before receiving the restriction, stop and tell the instructor what happened rather than quietly submitting the output. Follow the school’s academic-integrity process and provide the record the instructor requests. Do not delete prompts or outputs if they may be relevant to the conversation.
What is the safest decision process for any assignment?
Use this checklist each time the task changes:
- Read the syllabus, assignment sheet, exam rules, and school AI policy.
- Classify the proposed use: tutoring, brainstorming, practice, grammar help, research, drafting, rewriting, or answer generation.
- Ask the instructor for written permission and limits whenever the rule is unclear.
- Use only the functions expressly permitted and keep prompts or outputs if required.
- Verify facts, calculations, sources, accuracy, and bias.
- Disclose or cite the tool in the required format.
- Remove personal, confidential, identifiable, or unauthorized copyrighted material before using an external service.
- Submit only work you understand, can explain, and can defend as original under the course rules.
This process handles the uncertainty that a universal rule cannot: it ties the tool’s use to the particular assignment, the instructor’s permission, the assessment setting, and your responsibility for the final work.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I save chatbot conversations as proof of permitted use?
Yes, when the course asks for prompts or outputs, save them in the requested format and keep the instructor’s written permission with them. If no record is required, retaining a private copy can still help you explain how the tool was used, but do not submit extra material unless the instructor requests it.
Can I use AI during an open-book or take-home test?
An open-book or take-home label does not by itself authorize a chatbot. Check whether the assessment is classified as open or unsupervised for AI purposes and read the specific tool limits; a separate exam rule can be stricter than the general homework policy.
What should a parent do if the school and teacher give different instructions?
Show the student both statements and ask the teacher or school office which rule controls the particular assignment. Keep the clarification in writing, because broad school guidance and a task-specific instruction may address different levels of permission.
Is spell-checking always allowed if generative AI is banned?
Not necessarily. A conventional built-in spell-checker may be treated differently from a generative rewriting feature, but only the instructor can define that boundary for the assignment. Ask whether correcting spelling, grammar, tone, or sentence structure is permitted before enabling an automated writing feature.
