Cheap shelves and racks can turn common Planks or Sheet Metal into extra attached stash slots, while expensive pieces with few or no slots are primarily cosmetic. The right decision depends on the exact recipe, your current material bottlenecks and whether your Outpost layout is ready to be permanent.
There is no published universal material-to-storage return-on-investment figure or break-even point. Treat every design as a recipe-specific decision: compare its attached slots with every input it consumes, then ask what those materials are needed for next.
What does furniture do in ARC Raiders?
Furniture gives your Outpost both decoration and, on some designs, attached storage slots. You can place items on shelves, racks and other standing furniture, including full stacks, so a furnished room can function as additional storage rather than merely looking different. That is why the system is more than a cosmetic side activity.
Embark Studios introduced the Outpost and craftable furniture designs in the Frozen Trail 2.0 update on October 8, 2026. The ARC Raiders Team describes the designs as working “similar to blueprints”: you learn a design and then use it to craft that furniture for your Outpost. The update contains 100 designs in total: 73 found Topside, 22 unlocked by upgrading the Outpost, four exclusive to the Frozen Trail Pass and one exclusive to downloadable content.

The practical value varies dramatically. A shelf with six or 12 attached slots can relieve stash pressure; a decorative table with no slots cannot. Always inspect the design’s attached-slot count before treating it as an inventory upgrade.
Why can storage furniture be worth the materials?
Storage is the clearest functional benefit. Embark lists a maximum of 328 stash slots without Expedition bonuses or separately acquired Nomadic Envoy space. Extra furniture slots do not replace the need to manage that stash, but they can give you more room for crafting inputs, weapons and other items between runs.
The value is highest when you are regularly hitting the stash limit or keeping several full stacks for future recipes. In that situation, a low-cost shelf can prevent you from discarding useful materials. The value is lower when your stash has ample free capacity, or when crafting the piece would consume an input needed for an immediate weapon, upgrade or mission.

Furniture also lets you separate storage by room or purpose. A weapon rack can keep weapon-related items together, while shelves can hold general materials. That organization is a convenience benefit rather than a separately priced economic return, so decide whether it matters to your own workflow.
Which furniture designs offer the strongest early value?
Current recipe data illustrates why “craft furniture” is too broad a recommendation. The following examples compare published material costs with attached slots; they are not an official economy formula.

On the published numbers alone, the Chambers Shelf is an especially compelling storage candidate if you can spare Sheet Metal. The Battered Den Shelf is a safer first purchase when Planks are plentiful and you need only a small capacity increase. The Study Piano demonstrates the opposite case: a large Plank cost and three rare components produce only three attached slots, so its justification is usually appearance or personal preference.

These comparisons should not be converted into a universal “slots per material” ranking. Recipes can require different material types, research points or components, and the opportunity cost changes with your current inventory. A design that looks efficient in isolation may be a poor choice when its material is your next upgrade bottleneck.

- Identify the purpose. Decide whether you need storage, room organization or decoration. If the piece has zero attached slots, evaluate it as a cosmetic purchase.
- Read the complete recipe. Count Planks, Sheet Metal, Plastic Parts, Fabric, Chemicals, research points, advanced components and any other listed inputs. Do not judge a design from its headline material alone.
- Check the attached-slot count. Compare the slots with other designs you can already craft. A cheaper piece with fewer slots can still be the correct temporary solution if it uses a non-bottleneck material.
- Protect rare components. Advanced Mechanical Components and similar scarce inputs may have more urgent uses. The Study Piano’s three-component requirement is a clear reason to delay it when your progression is component-limited.
- Check your immediate stash pressure. If you are not close to the stash limit, saving the recipe’s inputs for equipment or an Outpost upgrade may provide more immediate value.
- Confirm that the room is ready. Since room construction and layout are difficult to revise, avoid spending on a large arrangement before you know where storage and access will go.
This process produces a local decision rather than a pretend global return. The useful comparison is “slots or enjoyment gained from this exact design versus what these exact materials enable right now.”
What should you craft first in a new Outpost?
For most players, a sensible order is functional storage first, specialized storage second and cosmetics last.
- Start with an inexpensive slot-bearing shelf. The Battered Den Shelf costs five Planks for two attached slots, making it a low-commitment way to test how you use furniture storage.
- Add a high-capacity piece when its material is available. The Chambers Shelf lists 10 Sheet Metal for 12 attached slots. If Sheet Metal is not needed for a near-term upgrade, its capacity can justify an early build.
- Use a weapon rack for a specific organizational need. The Battered Weapon Rack costs 10 Sheet Metal for three slots. Its lower capacity than the Chambers Shelf makes sense when you value a dedicated weapon area rather than maximum storage.
- Upgrade shelves when the extra slots solve a real problem. The Sturdy, Polished and Ornate Den Shelves increase capacity but consume progressively more Planks. Upgrade because you need the room, not simply because a higher tier exists.
- Delay rare-component and zero-slot pieces. Build designs such as the Study Piano after core storage, progression and crafting reserves are secure, unless the visual design is itself your priority.
Celeste trades the new materials used for furniture, but the recipe index shows that designs can draw from several categories, including Planks, Sheet Metal, Plastic Parts, Fabric, Chemicals, research points and advanced components. Keep a reserve for your next known objective before converting a large share of one material into decoration.
How do Outpost progression and design unlocks affect the decision?
You cannot treat furniture as an immediately available catalog. Designs must be learned, and the Outpost itself is unlocked through a project. PC Gamer’s progression report places the Sheltered Retreat requirement at level 18 for the practical Outpost path. That means a player still working toward the Outpost should save materials according to the progression objective rather than planning a furniture build prematurely.
Once the Outpost is available, the source of a design matters. Most of the 100 designs are found Topside or earned through Outpost upgrades, while a small number are tied to the Frozen Trail Pass or downloadable content. A design you have not learned cannot be evaluated solely by its recipe; first confirm how and when it becomes available to your character.

Upgrading the Outpost can therefore have two kinds of value: it advances the base and may unlock additional furniture designs. If an upgrade consumes the same scarce inputs as a decorative piece, the upgrade normally deserves priority until you understand its effect on your available rooms and storage.
Why should you plan the room before placing furniture?
PC Gamer reports that rooms and their layout cannot currently be changed after construction. This makes placement a progression decision, not a harmless experiment. Sketch a simple purpose for each room before committing materials: general storage, weapons, crafting-related displays or decoration.

What furniture bugs and caveats should you expect?
The official known-issues list includes several furniture problems: pieces can clip through the Outpost, furniture can block slots and make them unselectable, the camera can be obstructed, and Raiders can clip through tables. These are current caveats, not evidence that every placement will fail.
Reduce the practical risk by leaving clearance around interactable surfaces, avoiding dense arrangements near doorways and checking that every attached slot can be selected before adding more objects. If a slot becomes inaccessible, treat that piece as unreliable storage until a game update addresses the issue; do not count inaccessible capacity in your planning.

Yes, once storage and progression needs are covered. An Outpost is also a persistent personal space, and a design can be worthwhile for its appearance, theme or sense of completion even when it adds no slots. That is a preference-based value, not an inventory return.
Cosmetic crafting is safest when you have a surplus of the required inputs, no imminent upgrade competing for them and a room whose layout you are willing to keep. For pass- or downloadable-content designs, also consider whether access to the design is tied to that content before planning an entire room around it.

Often, yes. The sources do not publish a standardized sell value, recycle value, material price or universal furniture break-even calculation. Without those figures, no honest answer can claim that a specific shelf always produces more economic value than saving its Planks or Sheet Metal.
