What Applied Materials announced in 2025
In an October 23, 2025 SEC filing, Applied Materials said its workforce-reduction plan would affect approximately 4% of its global workforce. Reuters described the reduction as about 1,400 jobs. Those figures are approximate, and the company filing did not state an exact job count.
The company estimated restructuring charges of $160 million to $180 million, mostly in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025. It expected to complete the plan in the first quarter of fiscal 2026, subject to local legal requirements. These are the costs and timing the company projected when it announced the plan, not confirmation here that every reduction or charge ultimately occurred on that schedule.
Is there evidence of another company-wide layoff?
The cited SEC filing, company releases and contemporaneous Reuters report document the October 2025 plan; they do not establish a later second company-wide round. That does not rule out smaller local reductions, hiring pauses or personnel actions that were not publicly disclosed. Without an official statement or published figure, claims that Applied Materials has announced another company-wide layoff are not substantiated by these sources.

Why the company cut costs—and what its results showed
Reuters linked the 2025 action to tighter U.S. export controls on semiconductor equipment. Those restrictions created material China-related revenue risk, while Applied Materials described the workforce changes as part of simplifying operations. The layoff announcement therefore reflects pressure to adjust costs and operations; on its own, it does not show that the company’s business was collapsing.
The company’s subsequent financial reports presented a stronger demand picture. Applied Materials reported record quarterly revenue in both Q2 and Q3 of fiscal 2026:

These revenue figures and year-over-year comparisons are from Applied Materials’ 2026 company/SEC reports. In Q3 FY2026, the company also reported a 50.3% GAAP gross margin. That is one quarter’s reported margin, not a measure of the margin on every product or a forecast.

After the Q2 FY2026 results, CEO Gary Dickerson said Applied Materials expected its semiconductor-equipment business to grow more than 30% in calendar 2026. Following Q3, the company said it was further raising its Semiconductor Systems revenue expectations for calendar 2026 and was confident it would grow faster than the market. These statements are management guidance and expectations, not guaranteed outcomes.

Applied Materials attributed the stronger outlook to rapid global AI adoption and rising demand for its materials-engineering solutions. That demand outlook can coexist with cost reductions: the company faced trade-policy exposure in China while anticipating strong demand in other parts of its semiconductor-equipment business.
