Apple has launched Siri AI as part of its 2027 software releases, but it has not confirmed a general-purpose setting that lets users freely swap Siri’s underlying model for Gemini, Claude, or another chatbot. At WWDC on June 8, 2026, Apple introduced Siri AI, describing it as a more capable assistant powered by Apple Intelligence. Apple announced the feature for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, visionOS 27 and tvOS 27.

On September 14, 2026, Apple said Siri AI and its next-generation Apple Intelligence capabilities were available with those 2027 software releases. Apple also said the next-generation foundation models were custom-built in collaboration with Google and its Gemini models.
Apple’s Craig Federighi, senior vice president of Software Engineering, characterized the release this way: “We’re delivering the next generation of Apple Intelligence across our platforms; introducing Siri AI, a profoundly more intelligent, knowledgeable, and capable Siri; expanding child safety features with intuitive new tools for families; and making our software platforms faster, more reliable, and more delightful than ever before.” This is Apple’s description of the product, not an independently measured performance result.

Can Siri use Gemini or another AI assistant?
There are two different ideas being conflated: Apple using outside technology to help build its own models, and Apple allowing users to choose an outside assistant on demand.

How Apple’s app integration differs from changing Siri’s model
Apple’s developer frameworks let apps connect to Apple Intelligence and features such as Siri AI. App Intents are the key integration layer: an app can expose actions and information that Siri and system experiences can invoke.
That can make a third-party app feel more deeply integrated with Siri—for example, by exposing an app action through a voice request—but it is different from replacing Siri’s underlying foundation model. An app integration determines what an app can do through Apple’s system frameworks; it does not, by itself, give the user a provider switch for Siri’s reasoning engine.

Availability: what “available now” means
Apple’s September 14 announcement places availability in the 2027 software releases. The feature is therefore tied to software version, supported language and region, and eligible hardware—not simply to owning an Apple device or installing any update.
Check before upgrading
- Confirm that your iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple Vision Pro or Apple TV model is eligible.
- Check whether Siri AI is offered in your country or region and in your preferred language.
- Install the applicable 2027 operating-system release listed by Apple.
- Review Apple’s current compatibility and feature-availability documentation, because the announcement excerpts do not provide a complete device matrix.
Apple’s June announcement materials mention products including the iPhone 17 Pro, but they do not establish that model as a requirement. Do not assume a hardware upgrade is necessary until Apple identifies your exact model as unsupported.

What remains uncertain about third-party AI access
User choice
The strongest unresolved question is whether Siri will eventually let people select Gemini, Claude or another service for particular tasks. Bloomberg’s March report described that direction, but Apple’s later announcement did not confirm a general provider-selection control.
Processing and privacy
Apple Intelligence can involve on-device and cloud processing, depending on the workload. The handling, retention and privacy protections of an external provider cannot be assumed to match Apple’s policies. Any future partner integration would need to be evaluated on its own terms.

Regional and hardware limits
Availability may vary by geography, language, software release and device. A feature announcement across Apple’s platforms is not a promise that every model receives every Siri AI capability.
Why the distinction matters
Apple’s approach combines a system-level assistant with Apple-controlled frameworks and models developed with Google’s assistance. That can deliver tighter access to device context and app actions than a standalone chatbot, while still leaving open questions about which tasks use Apple models, which use cloud processing, and whether users can choose an outside provider.
For now, describe Siri AI as Apple’s upgraded Apple Intelligence assistant, with Apple Foundation Models developed in collaboration with Google and Gemini models. Describe rival-assistant selection as a reported plan unless Apple publishes a specific user-facing feature that confirms it.
