Apple has not announced a smart home camera. In a report published October 1, 2026, MacRumors attributed the claim that a rumored Apple camera would have “no video recording” to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, speaking on his Power On podcast. Gurman described a camera that analyzes the home environment with AI but does not give users footage. If accurate, that would make it fundamentally different from cameras that save clips for later review.
What the “no video recording” claim means—and what it doesn’t
MacRumors quoted Gurman describing the rumored product as “the first mainstream video camera that’s a home video security camera that doesn’t give you any footage.” The report also repeated the phrase “no video recording” and characterized the device as a sensor that analyzes the home environment using AI. These are Gurman’s reported remarks, not confirmed Apple specifications. MacRumors’ October 1 report is the cited account; the podcast audio was not independently reviewed.
“No video recording” could mean that a camera might sense or analyze activity without providing recorded clips to the owner. The report does not explain exactly what data the device would generate, retain, or transmit. Nor does it confirm which events it could recognize, whether it would trigger automations or alerts, or how accurately it would work.
How that would differ from HomeKit Secure Video
Apple’s current HomeKit Secure Video documentation describes a different model: compatible cameras can stream live video, send activity notifications, and record clips that users can later view in the Home app. Apple says video is analyzed on the home hub and recordings are end-to-end encrypted. Recording settings can also differ depending on whether people are home or away. Apple’s iPhone user guide explains camera viewing and recording controls.

That last distinction matters for security decisions. An alert or AI-generated description is not the same thing as video evidence that can be replayed after an incident. The report does not establish whether the rumored camera would provide summaries or alerts at all, much less whether those would serve as a substitute for clips.
What HomeKit Secure Video costs in storage-plan terms
Apple’s current iCloud user guide ties the number of HomeKit Secure Video cameras to the iCloud+ plan. Apple says video does not count toward the plan’s iCloud storage, and the Home app can show the latest ten days of activity. Apple’s iCloud guide lists these camera limits:

These are Apple’s published plan details. They describe the existing HomeKit Secure Video service, not a requirement or price for the rumored camera; the report establishes neither for that device.
Existing Apple Home cameras that do keep footage
If your priority is reviewing recorded video, Apple’s accessories directory lists compatible third-party cameras that support HomeKit Secure Video. One example is the Logitech Circle View Camera; Apple also lists compatible models from Eve and Netatmo. Logitech makes the Circle View, not Apple, and it is a current alternative—not evidence that the rumored device would work the same way.

What remains unconfirmed
As of MacRumors’ October 1, 2026 report, Apple had not confirmed the camera or its features. The report does not establish a final design, price, release timing, availability, compatibility, retention policy, or details of data processing. Treat “no video recording” as an attributed description of a rumor, not a settled product specification.
