Apple has confirmed a foldable iPhone, named iPhone Duo, with U.S. pricing starting at $1,999. Preorders begin October 16, 2026, and availability starts October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions, with additional markets following October 30. The separate large foldable iPad is not a 2026 launch: reporting puts its target at 2028, with a possible delay to 2029.
What the 2026 forecast got right—and what changed
The original headline joined two different product predictions. On September 2, 2025, MacRumors reported analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s expectation that Apple would release a foldable iPhone in 2026, followed by a foldable iPad in 2028. The iPhone prediction has since become an announced product; the iPad remains a reported development project, not a product Apple has announced for sale.

What Apple has confirmed about iPhone Duo
Apple’s announced specifications describe a phone that opens into a larger display, with two screen sizes and a dual-battery design. These are Apple’s published product details, rather than the earlier dimensions reported while the device was still a rumor.

An April 7, 2026 report had described pre-announcement dimensions of about 5.5 inches folded, 7.8 inches open, and 4.5 mm thick. Those were rumor-stage figures, not the specifications Apple later announced; the published display sizes above are the confirmed figures in the current announcement.

What the foldable iPad reports say
The reported iPad concept is much larger than a phone. Kuo’s 2025 forecast, as reported by MacRumors, described an unfolded display in the 18-to-20-inch range. A later MacRumors report citing Mark Gurman described an approximately 18-inch Samsung-made display and prototype weight of about 3.5 pounds. The same March 2026 report said weight and display-related technical problems could shift the expected target from 2028 to 2029.
Neither the screen size nor weight is an announced retail specification. The report also said the device could cost up to three times as much as a 13-inch iPad Pro if component prices stay high. That is a reported estimate, not an Apple price or a confirmed product configuration.

How to read the forecast numbers
Kuo estimated that Apple could ship 8 million to 10 million foldable iPhones in 2026 and as many as 25 million in 2027, according to MacRumors’ September 2025 report. These were analyst estimates made before the product announcement, not Apple sales guidance or confirmed shipment totals. They should not be confused with the product’s availability dates.
Market adoption is another reason to separate a forecast from a guaranteed hit: in 2026, CCS Insight chief analyst Ben Wood told the Associated Press that foldables represented less than 5% of the overall smartphone market. That figure is attributed market context, not a prediction of iPhone Duo sales.

What remains unknown
Apple’s announcement confirms the product name, core specifications, starting U.S. price, initial availability schedule, and two accessories. It does not establish details that matter for a full buying comparison, such as the phone’s thickness and weight, camera configuration, stylus support, operating-system behavior in different screen states, crease visibility, or durability test results. Those should not be inferred from pre-announcement reports or from another manufacturer’s foldable.
For the iPad, the release year, final design, retail specifications, price, and even whether the reported target will hold remain unconfirmed by Apple. The 2028 and 2029 dates are analyst-reporting milestones, not an official launch commitment.
