Apple’s Emoji Game is a daily Apple News+ puzzle in which you complete three short phrases by dragging emoji—including Genmoji—into blanks. It may invite Wordle comparisons, but Apple’s official descriptions do not call Wordle a rival or describe the game as a competitive response. The meaningful difference is the format: Emoji Game tests phrase and emoji associations, while Wordle tests five-letter word guesses with letter-position feedback.
What Apple’s Emoji Game is
Apple announced Emoji Game on July 17, 2025, as part of Apple News+ Puzzles. Each daily puzzle contains three phrases. You select emoji and place them in the missing positions to complete the phrases.
An emoji may represent a word directly, suggest an association, or work with other emoji to express the intended phrase. Genmoji can also be used among the available choices. Lauren Kern, Apple News editor-in-chief, described it as “the perfect addition to the Apple News+ suite of word and number puzzles, turning the emoji we use every day into a brainteaser that’s approachable and fun.”
How a puzzle works
- Open the News app and find Apple News+ Puzzles. Apple’s June 2025 description placed the game in the Following tab; Apple’s support instructions describe playing it in the News app.
- Read the three incomplete phrases and inspect the available emoji.
- Drag an emoji into a blank. The answer can depend on a literal meaning, an association, or a combination of symbols.
- Use as few moves as possible. Trying an answer counts as a move, and expanding a clue also counts as a move.
- If you reveal answers, the puzzle is excluded from scoreboard statistics and streaks, according to Apple Support.
What counts as a move
Emoji Game does not measure performance by a Wordle-style guess grid. Its score is based on moves, so experimenting with placements can lower your result. Clue expansion is not free, either: opening a clue adds to the move count. Revealing an answer lets you finish, but Apple says that result will not count toward scoreboard statistics or streaks.

Where it is available
At launch, Apple announced English-language access for Apple News+ subscribers in the United States and Canada. Apple’s June 2025 services announcement referred to a daily puzzle for U.S. users and English-speaking users in Canada. Availability, supported devices, operating-system requirements, and subscription terms can change, so check Apple’s current News and Apple News+ support information for your location before relying on launch details.
The July announcement also said subscribers would be able to access the game through Apple Games in the fall. That was a planned distribution channel at launch, not confirmation of its current availability.

Results, streaks, and sharing
Apple says players can track results on Game Center leaderboards and share them through Messages, Mail, social media, or other platforms. Apple’s services announcement also referenced statistics, streaks, and Game Center competition. These features apply to eligible completed play; a puzzle finished by revealing answers is not counted in scoreboard statistics or streaks.
Emoji Game versus Wordle
| Feature | Apple Emoji Game | Wordle-style play |
|---|---|---|
| Core task | Complete three short phrases with emoji. | Guess a target word, commonly using letter and position feedback. |
| What you interpret | Literal emoji meanings, associations, and combinations. | Spelling and letter placement. |
| Performance measure | Number of moves; clue expansion and attempted answers count. | Usually guesses or attempts, depending on the specific game. |
| Social features described by Apple | Game Center leaderboards, statistics, streaks, and result sharing. | Varies by the particular Wordle implementation. |
| Access model | Apple News+ subscriber feature, with launch access announced for the U.S. and Canada in English. | Depends on the edition or service offering. |
Both games have a daily-puzzle rhythm and shareable results, which explains the comparison in the headline. The sourced Apple descriptions do not establish that Emoji Game uses Wordle’s guess-and-letter-feedback mechanics, nor that Apple designed it to compete with Wordle.

What Apple has not established
Apple has not published a relevant usage, adoption, or performance statistic for Emoji Game in the cited launch materials. There is also no official statement in those materials describing Wordle as the game’s rival or explaining a market strategy. Treat “battles Wordle” as headline framing rather than an Apple claim.
