Contemporaneous reporting said existing 1TB subscribers were moved to 2TB without a price increase. This was a historical plan change, not a new 2026 discount.
What Apple changed on June 5, 2017
Apple replaced the U.S. 1TB monthly plan with a 2TB plan priced at $9.99 per month—the previous 1TB price. MacRumors reported the tier change the following day and said it applied across countries where the storage plans were available.
TechCrunch reported that Apple told customers who had purchased the 1TB monthly plan before June 5 that they would be automatically upgraded to 2TB without paying more. That upgrade detail comes from the contemporaneous report rather than a directly located Apple announcement.
What the U.S. plan costs now
Apple’s current U.S. iCloud+ page still lists 2TB at $9.99 per month. The present U.S. ladder is:

How to tell what you personally pay
The 2017 upgrade does not determine every subscriber’s current bill. Apple says some existing subscriptions retain their initial subscription price as long as the plan has not been changed or canceled. Its support terms, checked September 27, 2026, identify August 21, 2024 as the date for those legacy-price conditions.

How the larger tiers arrived
The 2017 change initially centered on replacing 1TB with 2TB. Apple later expanded the upper end of the lineup: in its September 18, 2023 announcement, Apple said users could choose 6TB for $29.99 per month and 12TB for $59.99 per month. See Apple’s announcement for that dated context.

Why some accounts show a different amount
- Region: Apple sets local prices and currencies; $9.99 refers to the U.S. plan.
- Legacy status: An unchanged, uncanceled subscription may retain its initial price under Apple’s stated terms.
- Plan changes: Upgrading, downgrading or canceling can replace legacy billing with the currently offered price.
- Taxes and billing rules: The amount charged can reflect local taxes or account-specific billing arrangements.
For an authoritative figure, use the price displayed in your Apple account and compare it with Apple’s regional support page rather than assuming the U.S. list price applies.
