Yes. Apple TV+’s Dark Matter adapts Blake Crouch’s novel in season one, then continues beyond the book’s ending in season two. Crouch wrote and showran the series, and the shift is more than a new stretch of plot: the show also broadens the story’s point of view.
Is Apple TV’s Dark Matter based on a book?
Yes. The series is adapted from Blake Crouch’s novel of the same name. Apple’s original announcement described it as a nine-episode series and identified Crouch as both writer and showrunner, giving the author a direct role in translating the story for television. Apple’s series announcement

The story centers on Jason Dessen, a physicist, professor, and family man who is abducted into an alternate version of his life. He tries to find his way back to the reality—and family—he knows.
How much of the book does season one adapt?
Season one follows the novel’s central journey. The key distinction is that the adaptation is not a scene-for-scene retelling: Crouch has described making choices about what suited the series’ own internal logic. In one example, he said the team removed a scene he liked from the book after deciding it did not fit the rules they had established for the show’s universe. The show also changes the balance of perspective. Crouch said the novel is told almost entirely from Jason’s point of view, while the series spends more time with other characters, including Daniela and her experience with Jason2. That broadening lets the adaptation explore how the same events affect people beyond its central protagonist. TIME’s interview with Crouch
Does Dark Matter season 2 go beyond the book?
Yes. Season two continues after the novel’s story rather than adapting a second book. Crouch said the writers initially found the lack of a follow-up novel challenging, but that it ultimately gave them room to pursue stories that could not have appeared in season one. GamesRadar+’s interview with Crouch
“But once we jumped over that initial hurdle, it was totally freeing because we weren’t locked into things that the book demanded us to do.”
“So we got to follow our fancy a little bit more and write a few episodes that would never have existed in season 1.”

That makes season two an original continuation by the adaptation’s author and showrunner, not a screen version of a published sequel. Apple’s synopsis sets the Dessens in a world that initially seems quiet and safe, until new events force them to run again. It also outlines several story threads: Jason’s fixation on the Box, Daniela’s growing paranoia, Amanda and Ryan’s attempt to find their way home, and Leighton’s pursuit of a perfect world as Blair tries to stop him. A third season is not confirmed. The Mac Observer reported on September 13, 2026, that Apple had not announced a renewal. Crouch’s comments about conceiving the story across three seasons describe a creative plan, not an order from Apple. The Mac Observer’s September 13, 2026 report

Either order works, but the book is the clearest way to see what the series changes and what it carries forward. Read it for Jason’s more concentrated perspective and the novel’s version of the central journey; watch the series for expanded viewpoints and, in season two, a continuation beyond the book’s ending.
