Use the iPhone or iPad Apple TV Remote in Control Center if you want a no-purchase backup, easier text entry, or a way to look for a misplaced newer remote. Choose a physical Siri Remote for tactile controls and a dedicated controller you can leave by the TV. For many homes, keeping both is the most practical option. Check your audio setup, Siri availability, and remote generation before relying on a particular feature or buying a replacement.

How the two Apple TV controls compare

What matters iPhone or iPad Apple TV Remote Physical Siri Remote
Access Built into Control Center on a supported iPhone or iPad. Convenient when your phone is already nearby. A dedicated controller that can stay in the viewing area.
Navigation On-screen controls with swipes, taps, and press-and-hold actions. Physical buttons and a clickpad or touch surface, depending on generation.
Text and voice Supports text entry, dictation, and Siri where the device, language, and region support them. Supports Siri and dictation where available.
Volume iPhone or iPad volume buttons work only with supported audio configurations; otherwise, use the TV’s remote for volume. Volume buttons also depend on the audio setup.
Lost remote Can control Apple TV while you search. With supported software, it can also help locate a second-generation-or-later remote. Second-generation-or-later models can be found using a compatible iPhone and Apple TV.
Cost and compatibility No separate remote purchase if you already have a supported iPhone or iPad. A replacement purchase; check the generation, tvOS requirement, and charging connector.

Which one should you use?

Use Control Center when your phone is handy

The built-in Apple TV Remote is a useful everyday option if you already keep your iPhone or iPad nearby. It is particularly convenient for entering text, using dictation, and controlling Apple TV when the physical remote is misplaced. It does not require buying another controller.

Use the physical remote for tactile, dedicated control

A physical remote is generally simpler if you want buttons you can feel and a controller that does not require picking up or unlocking a phone. Physical controls differ by generation, so do not assume every Siri Remote has the same surface or button layout.

Keep both for convenience and backup

The controls overlap, so you can use the physical remote as your regular controller and keep the iPhone or iPad remote available as a backup. This is also useful while you locate a misplaced remote or troubleshoot one that has stopped responding.

What the iPhone and iPad remote can do

Apple’s Control Center remote supports swiping to navigate, tapping to select, and holding for contextual options. It also provides Back and Home actions, Apple TV app navigation, app switching, Siri or dictation, playback controls, and ten-second skip controls. The exact options can depend on the Apple TV and software.

Apple Watch offers a more limited remote interface. It supports navigation and selection, Back and Home, TV app navigation, playback, captions, mute, power, and volume adjustment with the Digital Crown.

Set up the Apple TV Remote in Control Center

Apple documents support for Apple TV HD or later and AirPlay-compatible smart TVs. For an AirPlay-compatible smart TV, add it to the Home app and assign it to a room first.

  1. Make the remote control available. Open Control Center on your iPhone or iPad. If the Remote control is missing, use Control Center’s Add Controls flow. On older iOS versions, Apple’s instructions use Settings > Control Centre.
  2. Open the remote. Tap the Remote control in Control Center.
  3. Select your TV. Choose the Apple TV or smart TV from the device list.
  4. Enter a passcode if prompted. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish connecting.

If setup fails, check that your iPhone or iPad and Apple TV are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Apple’s setup instructions are at Set up the Apple TV Remote on your iPhone or iPad.

Volume control is not guaranteed by either option

Control Center’s iPhone or iPad volume buttons work only with supported audio configurations. Apple specifies an Apple TV paired with HomePod, a soundbar, or other AirPlay-compatible speakers; if your setup does not support volume control from the phone, use the TV’s own remote.

The physical remote’s volume buttons are also conditional on the audio setup. If they do not control your sound system, consult Apple’s guide to using the Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote with Apple TV and use the appropriate TV or audio-device control.

Check the physical remote’s generation before buying

Apple lists the second- and third-generation silver remotes for Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K, but their minimum tvOS versions and charging connectors differ. The older first-generation remote is black and has a different design. Apple’s generation and compatibility details are in Identify your Apple TV remote.

Remote generation Charging Compatibility listed by Apple
Third-generation silver Rechargeable over USB-C Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD with tvOS 15.4 or later
Second-generation silver Rechargeable over Lightning Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K from tvOS 14.5
First-generation black Not stated in the cited generation summary Apple lists model-specific compatibility; check the identification page for your Apple TV model

Apple identifies the second- and third-generation remotes as Bluetooth 5.0 plus IR, and the first-generation model as Bluetooth 4.0 plus IR. Confirm the exact model and your Apple TV’s tvOS version before replacing a remote; USB-C applies to the third generation, not every Siri Remote.

Find a lost remote or use your phone temporarily

Apple’s lost-remote instructions say finding a physical remote requires an iPhone with iOS 17 or later and an Apple TV with tvOS 17 or later. The feature works with second-generation-or-later remotes. Open the Apple TV Remote in Control Center, select the device list, tap Find, and follow the on-screen proximity indicator. See Apple’s instructions for a lost Apple TV remote.

If you cannot find or use the physical remote, set up the Control Center remote as a temporary controller. Apple also lists replacement options for Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K.

If the physical remote stops responding

Try Apple’s troubleshooting steps before deciding the remote needs replacing. The sequence begins with pairing, then restarting the remote and checking Bluetooth signal strength where supported. On tvOS 18 or later, Apple TV settings display Bluetooth RSSI; if the signal is weak, Apple advises moving within about 20 feet (6 meters). Apple also advises charging the remote for 30 minutes. See Apple’s troubleshooting steps for an unresponsive remote.

Siri naming and availability vary by region

Apple uses the name Siri Remote in countries or regions that support Siri, and Apple TV Remote elsewhere. Siri also requires a supported Apple TV language and region. Check Apple’s remote guide and the Siri availability information for your location before relying on voice control.
