Apple TV has not run out of quality; it has a positioning problem. The U.S. service costs $14.99 a month after a seven-day trial, offers hundreds of Apple Originals, and now combines scripted series with MLB, MLS and U.S. Formula 1. Yet reported estimates put its subscriber base at about 25 million and its annual losses at roughly $1 billion. That is a weak standalone streaming business, even if Apple is using video to sell subscriptions, devices and time spent inside its wider ecosystem.
The fairest answer to “Has Apple TV+ lost its way?” is therefore conditional: it has struggled to become a must-have general streaming subscription, but it may be following a deliberate strategy in which prestige shows, live sports and living-room hardware reinforce Apple’s broader services business.
What “Apple TV” means in 2026
Apple uses “Apple TV” for several related products, so separate them before judging the service.
- Apple TV subscription: the paid service formerly known as Apple TV+. Apple’s U.S. page lists a $14.99 monthly price after a seven-day trial.
- Apple TV app: the application that hosts Apple’s subscription, lets you access participating third-party services, and offers rental and purchase content.
- Apple TV 4K: Apple’s set-top box for televisions. The fourth-generation model was announced on October 13, 2026.
The $14.99 subscription does not automatically include third-party channel subscriptions or every movie and show available to rent or buy in the Apple TV app. Those are separate transactions or subscriptions. The service itself works on Apple devices, smart TVs, streaming devices, game consoles, Android, Windows and the web, so owning Apple hardware is not required.

Apple’s current service pitch is a mix of hundreds of Apple Originals, a weekly release rhythm, and live programming. The listed sports include Friday Night Baseball, every Major League Soccer match, and—starting in 2026—Formula 1 in the United States.
Why critics say Apple TV has lost the plot
A small scale problem
The Associated Press estimated Apple TV+ had about 25 million subscribers in 2024, placing it eighth among streaming services by subscribers at that time. That is an estimate, not an audited number published by Apple. Even with that qualification, it suggests a service with high visibility and expensive programming but limited household penetration compared with the largest general-purpose platforms.
Scale matters because a streaming catalog has continuing costs: new productions, renewals, technology, marketing and rights. A smaller audience must either pay more per household or accept lower spending. Apple has chosen the expensive side of that trade-off, commissioning high-profile series and films without building the deep licensed library that keeps viewers watching between original releases.

The reported loss
Axios reported in 2025 that The Information estimated Apple was losing about $1 billion a year on Apple TV+. Apple does not disclose standalone financial statements for each service, so this is not a company-confirmed profit-and-loss figure. It is best treated as an outside estimate, not a precise accounting result.
Still, the estimate frames the strategic question. A $14.99 subscription can be profitable for an individual customer while the overall operation loses money if production and rights spending are high, the subscriber base is modest, or many people arrive through trials and promotions rather than paying continuously.
Sampling is not the same as retention
Apple has used free-access weekends and other promotions to let people sample its catalog. The AP described one such promotion as an attempt to bring viewers back to a service that had not fully taken off. University of Maryland professor Bo “Bobby” Zhou summarized the challenge: “Apple TV+ never really truly took off, even though they do have a series of really high-quality TV shows.”

A promotion can create a burst of viewing without proving that customers will renew month after month. Carnegie Mellon professor Michael D. Smith described the acquisition logic with an “anchor tenant”: “It’s kind of like a mall, right? I’ve got an anchor tenant. For me, it’s ‘Ted Lasso.’ That gets me to the mall. And once I’m at the mall, I’m going to wander around and discover some other stuff there.”
The analogy exposes Apple TV’s retention tension. A hit can attract a subscriber, but the service must offer enough appealing movies, returning seasons, weekly episodes and live events to prevent cancellation once the hit is over.
The case that Apple has a plan
Apple is measuring more than subscription profit
Apple’s financial reporting does not isolate Apple TV+ results, which leaves room for a different objective. Video can increase the value of Apple One bundles, create reasons to use the Apple TV app, support advertising-free premium positioning, and make Apple devices more useful. Under that model, a series does not need to carry the entire service by itself if it improves retention across a wider customer relationship.
This does not make the reported loss irrelevant. It means “successful” can mean ecosystem reach and engagement rather than a separately profitable streaming division. Readers evaluating Apple TV should decide which definition they care about.
Viewership and sports are moving in the opposite direction
Apple says Apple TV “eclipsed all prior viewership records in December 2025.” Apple also announced a five-year agreement making every Formula 1 race exclusive to Apple TV in the United States. Those are company claims, not independently audited subscriber figures, but they show continuing investment rather than retreat.

Sports change the service’s usage pattern. A scripted series may be watched intensely for a few weeks; a baseball, soccer or racing schedule can create a recurring weekly habit. Apple’s service page lists Friday Night Baseball and every MLS match, while the Formula 1 agreement adds a regular global sport with a concentrated U.S. fan base.

Rights are not universal. Availability, regional restrictions and blackouts vary by country and by competition. A sports fan should check the rights for the location where the games will actually be watched instead of assuming that a title on an Apple announcement is globally available.
Is Apple TV worth $14.99 a month?
Price alone does not answer this. The practical test is how often you will watch, whether you need the live sports, and whether you are willing to rotate subscriptions instead of keeping every service year-round.
| Viewer situation | How Apple TV fits | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| You want Apple Originals and watch new episodes weekly | The $14.99 monthly fee buys the Apple catalog and its weekly release schedule; a seven-day trial lets you test the current lineup. | Reasonable if you keep a running watchlist rather than joining for one show only. |
| You mainly want MLB, MLS or U.S. Formula 1 | Live rights can provide recurring reasons to open the app, but territory rules and blackouts apply. | Check the exact season and location before subscribing. |
| You expect a huge back catalog of familiar licensed movies and series | Apple emphasizes its own originals. The subscription does not include every rental, purchase or third-party channel in the Apple TV app. | Do not treat it as a replacement for a broad library service without checking specific titles. |
| You subscribe through a bundle or promotion | Apple One and promotional offers can change the effective monthly cost, while the listed standalone U.S. price remains $14.99. | Calculate the incremental cost you actually pay and note when any offer ends. |
A useful strategy is subscription rotation: join when several desired releases or a sports season overlap, download or bookmark what you can watch, and cancel before renewal if the remaining catalog no longer justifies the fee. That approach addresses Apple TV’s uneven release cadence without pretending the catalog is empty.

How Apple TV compares with broad streaming alternatives
Comparing Apple TV with Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Max or Peacock by brand reputation alone misses the real differences. Use the same five tests for each service:
- Bundle economics: compare the standalone monthly price with any bundle you already pay for. Apple’s listed U.S. price is $14.99, but a bundle can alter the incremental cost.
- Catalog shape: count the specific originals, licensed series and films you would watch. Apple’s “hundreds of originals” is not the same thing as a large licensed back catalog.
- Release cadence: note whether your preferred shows arrive weekly, all at once, or only for short seasonal windows. Returning seasons and sports schedules determine how long a subscription remains useful.
- Live-sports utility: verify competition, territory and blackout rules. Apple’s MLB, MLS and Formula 1 offerings are meaningful only where the rights apply.
- Platform reach: Apple TV works on Android, Windows, smart TVs, consoles and the web as well as Apple devices, so switching hardware is not a prerequisite.
This framework also prevents an awards-driven mistake: a service can produce excellent shows and still be poor value for someone who wants something familiar to watch every night.
Does Apple TV have enough to keep you subscribed all year?
For some households, yes—but not for the same reason as a giant library service. Apple TV’s year-round case depends on combining three layers:

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Originals that create appointment viewing
Apple’s originals are the service’s identity and its strongest marketing asset. Weekly releases stretch a season over more weeks and give viewers a reason to return, but they also create gaps when a favored series ends. Build a personal calendar of upcoming seasons rather than assuming “hundreds” means every genre and mood is covered at all times.

Friday Night Baseball, MLS and U.S. Formula 1 can turn a subscription from an occasional drama purchase into a recurring weekend or race-day utility. Their value is highly personal: a household that never watches those sports gains little, while a fan who follows a full season may regard them as the main reason to stay.
Discovery inside the app
The Apple TV app also presents third-party services and rental or purchase titles, but those do not become part of the $14.99 subscription automatically. Use the app as an interface if you like; budget each additional channel or transaction separately.
Apple TV 4K (4th generation): buy the box or use built-in TV apps?
Apple announced the Apple TV 4K (4th generation) on October 13, 2026. The U.S. price is $299, and retail availability begins November 13, 2026. It adds capabilities aimed at making the living room an Apple-controlled hub:
- An A19 chip.
- A dedicated AV1 decoder.
- Siri AI discovery designed to turn finding something to watch into a full-screen conversational experience.
- Three far-field microphones for hands-free interaction.
- Support for four-speaker HomePod surround sound.
- Smart-home hub features.
Apple vice president Bob Borchers described the intent this way: “With Siri AI, finding something to watch becomes a full-screen, conversational experience, and with built-in far-field microphones, it’s completely hands-free.”
| Choose the Apple TV 4K when… | Use your television’s built-in apps when… |
|---|---|
| You want one interface for Apple TV, other services, rentals and smart-home controls. | Your television already runs the services you use reliably and you do not need a separate hub. |
| You have, or plan to add, multiple HomePod speakers and value the surround feature. | You use the television’s speakers or a soundbar and have no Apple smart-home requirement. |
| You want Siri AI discovery, far-field microphones and the A19-based interface. | You mainly need inexpensive access to streaming apps and are satisfied with the current remote and search. |
| You are comfortable paying $299 for a dedicated box available from November 13, 2026. | You would rather avoid another hardware purchase while your existing software meets your needs. |
The box does not change the subscription’s catalog or turn third-party channels into part of Apple TV. Its value is interface quality, performance, audio integration and smart-home control. If those are not priorities, the service’s broad support for smart TVs, consoles, Android, Windows and the web lets you test Apple TV without buying Apple hardware.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Confusing the app with the subscription
Seeing a title in the Apple TV app does not prove it is included. Check whether the item is labeled as part of the Apple subscription, a third-party channel, a rental or a purchase before starting playback.
Assuming sports rights travel with you
MLB, MLS and Formula 1 availability can change by territory, and blackouts may apply. Confirm the rules for your country and local market before treating Apple TV as your only sports service.
Using the trial as a retention test
A seven-day trial can show whether the interface works and whether one current show interests you. It cannot demonstrate that the catalog will satisfy you for an entire year. Look beyond the first title and check the next releases and sports fixtures you would actually watch.
Taking estimates as audited company figures
The 25 million subscriber estimate from the AP and the $1 billion annual-loss estimate reported by Axios from The Information are external figures. Apple does not publish a standalone audited Apple TV+ subscriber total or service income statement in the cited material.
Verdict: lost plot, or different plot?
If the goal is to be a dominant, broadly stocked streaming utility, Apple TV has underperformed. Its estimated scale is modest, its economics are opaque, and a handful of acclaimed originals do not automatically create year-round retention. The “anchor tenant” problem remains real: viewers may arrive for one hit and leave when it ends.
If the goal is to make Apple’s ecosystem more valuable, the strategy is more coherent. Originals establish a premium identity; weekly releases and live sports create repeat visits; the app reaches non-Apple hardware; and the $299 Apple TV 4K extends the relationship into search, audio and the smart home. Apple’s reported record viewership in December 2025 and its Formula 1, MLS and MLB investments show that it is still expanding rather than quietly abandoning video.
For viewers, the practical conclusion is simple: subscribe for a specific combination of shows or sports, not for the assumption that every channel in the Apple TV app is included. Buy the new Apple TV 4K only if its interface, Siri AI, audio and home-hub features solve a problem your existing television does not. Apple TV may have lost the plot as a conventional Netflix-sized service; it may be writing a different plot in which television is one part of a larger Apple platform.
