The better place to buy your next iPhone depends on the full cost and how much carrier flexibility you want—not simply the advertised monthly payment. Buying outright or using Apple Card Monthly Installments (ACMI) keeps the phone unlocked; financing through a carrier installment program locks it to that carrier until it is paid off. You can also find many carrier promotions at Apple, so compare the specific offer terms rather than assuming one retailer is always cheaper.

Apple Store or carrier: what actually differs?

The retailer and the financing method are separate decisions. Buying at Apple does not automatically mean paying full price, and buying from a carrier does not automatically mean getting a better deal. Apple says many carrier promotions are also available in its stores, but the model, trade-in, plan, and checkout requirements still matter. Apple’s iPhone buying page is a starting point for checking its current purchase paths.

Purchase path Phone status and payment structure Key condition
Pay Apple in full Unlocked; paid upfront Use it with a carrier that supports the iPhone.
Apple Card Monthly Installments (ACMI) Unlocked; 24 monthly payments Subject to approval. Select AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon at checkout; taxes and shipping are not included in the 0% APR installment and are subject to the card’s variable APR.
Carrier installment financing, including when arranged at Apple Locked to the financing carrier until paid in full Check the carrier’s installment, service, and promotion requirements.
Apple Upgrade lease Lease for 12 or 24 months; return the phone to close the lease Device must be returned in good working condition; early termination may carry a substantial charge.

Apple describes its purchase and lock policies in iPhone shopping help. ACMI details, including the 24-month term and tax treatment, are in Apple Support’s ACMI information. Both ACMI and offers can change, so confirm the terms shown at checkout.

Compare total cost, not just the phone payment

A low monthly device payment can be offset by a more expensive required plan or by credits that you forfeit if you leave early. Compare the same phone, trade-in, line count, and intended service period for each option.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
  1. Calculate the net device cost. Start with the phone price, subtract the trade-in value and any immediate discount, and add any down payment.
  2. Add service for the period you expect to stay. Include the qualifying plan price for each line and compare it with a plan you would choose without the phone offer.
  3. Account for credits and their conditions. Separate an immediate discount from monthly bill credits. Find out what happens to credits if you change plans, cancel service, or pay off the phone early.
  4. Add charges due at purchase. Include tax, activation or upgrade fees, and any other required upfront amount.
  5. Value the flexibility you give up. If you might switch carriers before the installments or bill credits end, account for the remaining device balance and credits you could lose.

A simple comparison is: net device cost + service-plan cost over your expected period + required fees and taxes − credits you realistically expect to receive. This is a personal estimate, not a published price. Use actual checkout totals and plan prices; the maximum advertised credit alone does not establish which option costs less.

What a current AT&T offer illustrates

AT&T’s published U.S. offer terms in 2026 list up to $1,200 off iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max through 36 monthly bill credits with specified trade-ins and an AT&T Premium 2.0 plan or higher. AT&T lists that plan at at least $100 per month for one line before tax, fees, or discounts. The same page lists up to $930 off iPhone 17 with specified trade-ins and an Extra 2.0 plan or higher, at least $80 per month for one line before tax, fees, or discounts. These are conditional maximums, not a direct comparison of total ownership cost. See AT&T’s offer terms for current eligibility and details.

  • Unlocked for freedom to choose your carrier. Compatible with both GSM & CDMA networks. The phone is unlocked to work with all GSM Carriers & CDMA Carriers Including AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint., Etc.
  • The offer requires a 0% APR, 36-month installment and qualifying trade-in; AT&T says the trade-in must be completed within 30 days.
  • Tax is due on the phone’s full retail price, and AT&T lists a $35 activation or upgrade fee.
  • Reducing the plan can reduce or stop credits. Canceling service stops credits and makes the remaining device balance due.
  • The offers may change without notice. Check the live terms for the exact phone, trade-in, account, and plan before deciding.

Because credits arrive over time and the plan has its own price, do not treat “up to” savings as an upfront reduction or assume the offer is cheaper than an unlocked purchase.

Choose based on how you expect to use the phone

If you may switch carriers or want flexibility

Paying Apple in full or using ACMI keeps the iPhone unlocked, which avoids waiting for a carrier installment balance to be paid before the phone is unlocked. Compare ACMI’s 24-month payments and upfront tax and shipping with your budget. An unlocked phone does not remove the need to check that a prospective carrier supports the device.

If you would keep the qualifying plan for the full credit term

A carrier promotion may be worthwhile if you qualify for the trade-in and would keep the required plan and service anyway. Compare the plan’s cost over the full 36 months in the AT&T examples with your alternative service cost, then consider the credits you expect to receive and the balance due if you leave. The same promotion may be available through Apple, so check whether its checkout presents the identical offer and conditions.

If you upgrade frequently and accept returning the phone

Apple Upgrade is a lease, not a way to own the phone through ordinary installments. Apple’s September 2026 iPhone 18 Pro announcement lists model- and configuration-dependent payments of $49.99–$100.03 per month on a 12-month term and $34.99–$70.01 per month on a 24-month term, before taxes and trade-in credits. The phone must be returned in good working condition at lease end; early termination may incur a substantial charge. Review the lease terms and return requirements before treating the monthly amount as your upgrade cost. Apple’s announcement gives the current example ranges.

Apple’s current options: avoid relying on older program names

Apple announced on July 28, 2026 that Apple Upgrade launched in the United States and that Apple would no longer offer the iPhone Upgrade Program and iPhone Payments there. Those older names should not be assumed to describe current U.S. options; check Apple’s current purchase pages for availability and transition details. Apple’s launch announcement describes the change.

Apple also offers free online Personal Setup and trade-in services. These may make the purchase process more convenient, but they do not replace comparing the device, service, fees, and credit conditions. If you are choosing a carrier offer, confirm whether it is available through Apple’s checkout and whether its terms match the carrier’s own offer.
