Apple says it is working with Microsoft to move Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Notes, and Reminders on Mac from Exchange Web Services (EWS) to Microsoft Graph in a future macOS 27 update. There is no announced release date. Microsoft began phasing out EWS in Exchange Online on October 1, 2026, with the reported final shutdown scheduled for April 1, 2027—so the change is not a shutdown of Exchange or email generally, and its timing can differ by organization.
What is changing—and what is not
The change concerns EWS, a connection service used by some Mac integrations with Exchange Online. Microsoft’s phased disabling began October 1, 2026; the reported plan is to shut down EWS in Exchange Online on April 1, 2027. These are rollout milestones, not a single date when every account will necessarily stop working.
This is not a shutdown of Microsoft Exchange as a whole, Microsoft 365 email, or every way of accessing an Exchange account. The change described here applies to Exchange Online. Organizations running their own self-hosted Exchange servers are outside this particular Exchange Online retirement.
Will Apple Mail stop syncing my Microsoft 365 work email on my Mac?
It may, if your account is hosted in Exchange Online, your Mac app relies on EWS, and your organization’s EWS access is disabled. Because Microsoft is phasing the change and organizations can manage access during the transition, users may be affected at different times. A sync problem is not proof that every Apple Mail user—or every Microsoft 365 account—has lost access.

Apple’s deployment guidance also names Calendar, Contacts, Notes, and Reminders. Calendar’s Exchange integration supports functions such as invitations, invitee availability, private and recurring events, attachments, structured locations, delegation, and keeping tasks in Reminders up to date. Those connected features may be affected when EWS access is disabled; that does not mean every feature will fail for every user at once.
When will Apple fix Exchange in macOS?
Apple’s Platform Deployment guidance, published April 14, 2026, says: “Apple is actively working with Microsoft to update Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Notes, and Reminders to use the Graph API in a future update to macOS 27, including a declarative configuration for device management services.” Apple’s deployment guidance does not give a release date. An October 2, 2026 report also said the update had not arrived, so the Graph migration should be treated as planned rather than available now.

Does this affect iPhone or iPad Mail?
The reports distinguish iPhone and iPad from the Mac EWS route: those devices use Exchange ActiveSync for the accounts discussed, so this particular EWS retirement is not expected to disrupt them in the same way. That does not rule out separate account, authentication, or organizational-policy problems on mobile devices.

Microsoft’s Basic Authentication changes are a separate issue. Microsoft Learn describes Basic Authentication’s removal for Exchange Online EWS and other protocols, and Modern Authentication using OAuth 2.0 tokens. The current retirement is about phasing out the EWS service itself; changing authentication settings or removing and re-adding an account is not a general fix for it. See Microsoft’s Basic Authentication guidance for that distinct topic.
What can Mac users do during the transition?
Check your organization’s status
Ask your IT administrator whether your account is hosted on Exchange Online, whether the Apple app you use still has EWS access, and whether your organization has disabled it. Tenant policy and the phased rollout affect the answer, so avoid treating a local sync failure as a universal outage.

Use an approved alternative if necessary
Outlook for Mac is identified in the reporting as a Graph-compatible client option. Whether you can use it depends on your organization’s policy; switching is not mandatory for every user. Follow your IT team’s instructions for setting it up or choosing another approved way to access work email.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can administrators do?
Administrators should review Microsoft’s current Exchange Online EWS guidance and assess any temporary options Microsoft makes available for approved apps. Apple’s deployment page points administrators to Microsoft’s Exchange Team Blog for the transition details. The specific EWS status and configuration available to an organization cannot be determined from a general announcement; check the tenant’s current settings and Microsoft’s guidance before advising users.
