Apple Pay and Google Pay can both make online checkout easier and reduce how often you type your card details, but neither is universally safer or available everywhere. The merchant must offer the wallet, and your card, account, country, browser, and device must qualify. For card-data handling, Apple describes sending a Device Account Number and a transaction-specific security code; Google Pay can use a virtual card or, in its web API, PAN or tokenized credentials depending on eligibility and merchant setup.

There is no supported universal winner on security or speed. The practical choice is usually the wallet that appears at the particular checkout and is already configured with an eligible card.
How do Apple Pay and Google Pay protect card details?
Apple Pay: device account number and dynamic code
Apple says that, in its online and in-app payment flow, the merchant does not receive your actual payment card number. Instead, it receives a Device Account Number and a transaction-specific dynamic security code that the issuer, bank, or network can check. Apple says the payment information is encrypted and re-encrypted with a developer-specific key before it is sent to the developer or payment processor. Websites offering Apple Pay must verify their domain. Apple’s security and privacy overview
Google Pay: virtual cards or API credentials
Google’s consumer help describes a virtual card as a randomly generated number that replaces the actual card number for eligible online and in-app purchases using Chrome autofill. Separately, Google’s web API returns signed and encrypted payment data that can contain PAN credentials or tokenized card credentials, which consist of a device PAN and cryptogram. Which method is returned depends on the merchant’s configuration and the shopper’s card and account eligibility. Google Pay Help Google’s API FAQ

What these protections do—and do not—mean
Both providers describe ways to reduce exposure of ordinary card details, but their mechanisms and credential paths differ. Masking a card number or using a token does not prevent every kind of fraud, account compromise, issuer decline, or merchant dispute. These descriptions support a comparison of payment credentials, not a blanket ranking of overall safety or a guarantee of purchase protection.

Where can you use each wallet online?
Apple Pay: Safari and certain cross-device checkouts
Apple documents Apple Pay JS and the Payment Request API for web payments. A participating website must meet Apple’s requirements, including HTTPS, merchant registration, and domain verification. Support also depends on the applicable device and operating system. Apple Pay on the Web Apple’s implementation requirements
Apple Platform Security says the current Apple Pay JS SDK can start a transaction in a third-party browser on a computer or tablet and complete authorization on an Apple Pay-capable iPhone or iPad running iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 and later. The flow uses a scannable code and encrypted relay, and requires a compatible merchant implementation and authorizing device. It is not a general promise that Apple Pay works in every browser. Google Pay: broad browser support, conditional availability
Google’s web API setup documentation lists Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, Opera, and UCWeb UC Browser. A merchant’s page must use HTTPS with a TLS domain-validated certificate. Google’s integration checklist recommends testing current supported browsers on desktop, Android, and iOS. These are developer support conditions, not a guarantee that every shopper will see Google Pay in every browser. Tokenized cards are available only in some countries, and tokenized-card testing has Android and Google Play services conditions. Google Pay API setup Google Pay integration checklist
Why is the Apple Pay or Google Pay button missing?
A missing button does not necessarily mean your phone or card cannot use the wallet. The merchant decides which payment methods to display, and eligibility can also depend on region, browser, device, issuer, card, account setup, or wallet readiness settings.

What transaction information do Apple and Google describe?

Quick Recap
Which wallet should you use for online shopping?
- Choose the one the merchant offers if you want to complete the current purchase without entering card details manually.
- Prefer a particular credential path? Apple describes its web flow as sending a Device Account Number and dynamic code instead of the actual card number. Google Pay’s route may be a virtual card, PAN, or tokenized credentials depending on the flow and eligibility.
- Consider the device you already use. A wallet already configured with an eligible card may require fewer setup steps, while some checkouts require authentication on a separate device.
- Do not treat wallet checkout as a guarantee. The issuer and merchant still make authorization and risk decisions, and credential protection does not itself determine dispute outcomes.
