Apple Music has added delivery metadata that lets labels and distributors disclose when generative AI made a material contribution to a release. Apple says those disclosures will later appear to listeners as “Made With AI” labels, but as of September 27, 2026, no reviewed source confirms that the listener-facing rollout is live or gives a launch date.

What Apple Music is changing

The change has two stages that should not be confused:

Stage What happens Status
Delivery metadata Content providers attach AI-transparency fields when delivering music and related assets to Apple. Introduced in March 2026; documented in Apple Music Specification 5.3.26.
Listener display Apple Music shows a “Made With AI” label to users. Apple announced this as a later-2026 plan; a completed rollout is not confirmed as of September 27, 2026.

Apple’s specification says: “When artificial intelligence is used to generate a material portion of the content, you disclose this information using the <ai_transparencies> tag.” The system is therefore a disclosure mechanism in the delivery workflow first, not an announcement that Apple has independently identified every AI-made track.

Which parts of a release can be tagged

The framework covers four creative elements. Providers can apply more than one tag to the same release when AI materially contributed in several areas.

Artwork

This covers a material portion of album artwork, including static images and motion-graphic artwork.

Track

This is a track-level disclosure for a material AI contribution to the sound recording itself.

Composition

This covers the underlying composition embodied in the track, including lyrics and other compositional elements. A recording could therefore have a composition tag, a track tag, or both.

Music video

This applies when AI generated a material portion of a video’s visual elements. Apple’s April 2026 specification specifically documents the music-video field for music-video singles. The reported framework also includes videos bundled with albums and standalone videos. For the documented music-video value, providers use <ai_transparency>Music Video</ai_transparency> when the threshold is met.

What “material” and “AI-platform-generated” mean

Apple has not published a single percentage threshold in the material reviewed. Instead, the provider determines whether AI generated a material portion, in much the same way providers supply other descriptive metadata such as genres and credits.

In its August 20, 2026 message to partners, Apple Music defined AI-platform-generated content as “anything that is primarily derived from a generative AI service.” That wording is broader than tagging only a small AI-assisted edit: it explicitly covers content whose primary origin is a generative AI platform.

Who is responsible for reporting AI use?

Labels, distributors and other content providers supplying releases to Apple are responsible for declaring the applicable tags. Apple’s stated rationale is that providers know how their recordings, compositions, artwork and videos were created.

The described approach relies on upstream declarations rather than Apple detecting AI use for these labels. Consequently, an absent label cannot prove that a song contains no AI. It may mean that the provider judged the contribution immaterial, did not disclose it, or that the relevant listener display has not yet reached that item.

Timeline and current availability

Date Development
March 4, 2026 Apple introduced the AI-transparency metadata framework for deliveries. Reports said tags could be applied immediately, with required reporting for new deliveries planned for the future.
April 2026 Apple Music Specification 5.3.26 documented the AI-transparency field for music-video singles.
August 20, 2026 Apple told partners it planned to show the tags to listeners later in 2026 as “Made With AI” labels and reiterated the material-contribution standard.
September 27, 2026 No reviewed source confirms an exact consumer launch date or that the labels are already visible across Apple Music.

How this differs from AI detection

Apple’s model is provider disclosure: the people delivering the content declare which creative elements qualify. That is different from a platform running an automated detector over every upload or stream, and the two approaches should not be treated as equivalent measures of accuracy.

For context, Music Business Worldwide reported figures from Deezer, not Apple Music: Deezer said it received more than 60,000 fully AI-generated tracks per day, about 39% of its daily deliveries, and that up to 85% of streams on AI-generated music were fraudulent in 2025. Those numbers describe Deezer’s service and its reporting; they are not Apple Music measurements.

What listeners should expect

  • A future “Made With AI” label is intended to signal that generative AI made a material contribution to one or more identified creative elements.
  • The label may refer to artwork, the sound recording, the composition, the music video, or a combination of them.
  • The label is not, by itself, a quality rating, a fraud finding or a statement that every part of a release was generated by AI.
  • No label should be read as certification that a release was created entirely without AI, because the system depends on provider-supplied information.

What providers need to do

  1. Review how each release’s artwork, recording, composition and video were created.
  2. Decide whether generative AI supplied a material portion, including whether the work is primarily derived from a generative AI service.
  3. Attach every applicable AI-transparency value in the Apple delivery metadata. Multiple values may apply to one release.
  4. For music-video singles, follow the syntax and scope in Apple Music Specification 5.3.26, including the documented Music Video value.
  5. Keep the declaration aligned with the release’s credits and other provider-supplied metadata.

Why the change matters

The metadata gives distributors a standard place to disclose AI involvement before Apple exposes that information to listeners. If the planned labels launch, listeners will gain a clearer signal about how a release was made without needing to infer AI use from sound, artwork or online claims. The usefulness of that signal will depend on consistent, accurate reporting by the providers that submit the music.
