Both Apple Music and Spotify now offer lossless streaming, but their format ceilings differ—and those numbers alone don’t tell you whether you’ll hear a difference. Apple Music offers ALAC up to 24-bit/192 kHz; Spotify Premium Lossless offers FLAC up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz. Spotify also has a lossy Very High option up to 320 kbit/s. Whether any difference is audible depends on the recording, settings, and playback chain as well as the listener.
How do Apple Music and Spotify audio quality compare?
The services use different lossless formats and advertise different maximum resolutions. Those are format ceilings, not guarantees that every song or playback setup uses the maximum.
| Service and option | Documented format ceiling | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Music Lossless | ALAC, from 16-bit/44.1 kHz to 24-bit/192 kHz across the catalog described by Apple Support | Hi-Res playback depends on compatible equipment and a suitable connection; Bluetooth is not lossless. Apple Support |
| Spotify Premium Lossless | FLAC, up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz | Requires an eligible Premium plan, supported app and device, and the lossless setting. Availability varies by market. Spotify Support |
| Spotify Premium Very High | Up to 320 kbit/s, lossy | This is not Spotify Lossless. A high-bitrate lossy stream may already sound transparent to many listeners in ordinary conditions; a difference is not guaranteed. Spotify Support |
Spotify announced Premium Lossless on September 10, 2025, and said in an October 6, 2025 update that it was available to Premium users in more than 50 markets. That is a dated availability statement, not confirmation of availability in every country today. Spotify’s announcement and update
Can you hear the difference between lossless and lossy?
Sometimes a listener may detect or prefer a difference, but the format label alone cannot predict the result. Hearing depends on the specific encoding and recording, the listening conditions, and the person listening. A preference for one app’s presentation is also not, by itself, proof that its codec is responsible.

Apple Support describes the difference between AAC and lossless audio as “virtually indistinguishable.” That is Apple’s statement, not a universal scientific finding about every listener, song, or playback chain. Apple Support

- The Audio Engineering Society record describes a subjective test comparing AAC-LC at 320 kbps with an uncompressed reference. It used the ITU-R BS.1116 method and 12 audio samples spanning orchestral, jazz, vocal music, and speech. The 12 samples describe the study material, not the number of listeners or a population-wide audibility rate. Audio Engineering Society paper record
- BBC Research & Development’s “A subjective evaluation of high bitrate coding of music” examined whether listeners were likely to perceive a difference between lossless FLAC and AAC at 320 kbps. Its findings concern that controlled test and its materials; they do not establish that nobody can ever hear a difference or that one streaming service must sound better. What affects the sound you actually hear?
A lossless setting matters only if the signal remains lossless along the playback route. Check the plan, app, output connection, and any audio processing before comparing services.
- Plan and availability: Spotify Lossless is a Premium feature, and market availability can vary. Confirm that the option appears for your account and device.
- Quality settings: Select the lossless option in the relevant app; merely subscribing does not establish that a particular playback session is using it.
- Connection: Bluetooth compresses audio in the cited Apple and Spotify guidance. Spotify recommends Wi-Fi and wired headphones or speakers connected without Bluetooth for lossless playback. Some source devices may need a compatible USB DAC or audio adapter to make a wired connection. Spotify Support: lossless audio quality Apple Support
- Processing and loudness: Different EQ or effects can change the presentation. Spotify says it applies loudness normalization regardless of format, so account for normalization when comparing. Spotify Support: lossless audio quality
- Recording and master: Catalog versions or masters may differ between services. If the recordings are not the same, a difference cannot safely be attributed to lossless versus lossy encoding.
How to compare them fairly at home
To test whether you can distinguish the streams on your own setup, control the variables that can give away or change the result. This is a practical comparison, not a validated service-specific laboratory protocol.

- Choose the same recording. Match the song and version, and use the same master where possible. Note that catalog versions can differ.
- Match perceived loudness. A small level difference can bias which version seems clearer or better.
- Keep processing consistent. Turn off EQ or effects that differ between apps, and account for Spotify’s loudness normalization.
- Use a suitable route. For a lossless-transmission comparison, use Wi-Fi and wired headphones or speakers on a supported non-Bluetooth path.
- Hide the labels if feasible. Switch without looking at which format is playing, and repeat trials rather than trusting one sighted impression. The AES study’s use of ITU-R BS.1116 illustrates controlled subjective testing, but does not establish a consumer protocol for comparing these services.
- Describe only what the test shows. A defensible conclusion is “I could” or “could not reliably distinguish these versions on this setup,” not “Apple always sounds better” or “lossless never matters.”
Does Bluetooth support lossless?
No—not in the cited Apple and Spotify guidance. Bluetooth compresses the signal, so a lossless source does not mean lossless delivery to Bluetooth headphones. If you want to assess lossless transmission itself, use a supported wired, non-Bluetooth route; new equipment is not a guarantee that you will hear a difference. Apple Support Spotify Support
