For most iPhone users, standard security is the right default. Apple designed Lockdown Mode for the very few people who may be personally targeted by highly sophisticated digital attacks. Consider it if your role or circumstances give you a credible reason to expect that kind of targeting—and if you can accept restrictions on everyday features.
Lockdown Mode is not a routine security upgrade everyone needs, nor does Apple describe it as a guarantee against every attack. It reduces some potential avenues of attack by limiting features and connections, in exchange for changes to how the device works. Apple says most people will never be targeted by attacks of this nature (Apple Support: About Lockdown Mode).
Who should use Lockdown Mode?
Use it if you have a credible, specific reason to believe you could be personally targeted by a highly sophisticated cyberattack—for example, because of who you are, your work, or your public role. Apple characterizes the intended audience as a very small group, not people who simply want stronger privacy in general.
If you have no reason to expect targeted attacks of this kind, keep your iPhone on standard security settings and keep its software up to date. Apple’s documentation does not establish a measurable attack-rate reduction or quantify a universal benefit, so it cannot determine an individual’s risk for them.

What is the tradeoff?
Standard iPhone security preserves ordinary functionality. Lockdown Mode applies additional restrictions intended to reduce the device’s attack surface, but some routine interactions become unavailable or behave differently.

These are Apple-documented behavior changes, not a claim that every restriction matters equally to every user. Apple’s overview notes that a device “won’t function like it usually would” while the mode is enabled (About Lockdown Mode).

How to decide whether the restrictions are worthwhile
- Threat exposure: Do you have a concrete reason to expect personally targeted, sophisticated attacks? If not, the mode is probably unnecessary.
- Functionality cost: Can you work without some attachments, previews, website features, invitations, or automatic accessory connections?
- Device coverage: Can you enable it on your other supported Apple devices as well? Partial coverage may leave other devices outside the same set of protections.
- Exception discipline: Can you keep exclusions to a minimum? Apple warns that excluding apps, websites, or contacts reduces protections and may increase risk.
Lockdown Mode is a targeted protective measure, not a complete defense against every threat. Apple describes the restrictions and intended audience, but does not publish a universal effectiveness figure.
How to turn on Lockdown Mode on iPhone
Apple says the feature is available on iOS 16 or later, with additional protections in iOS 17. Requirements and behavior can change, so check Apple’s current guidance and update supported devices to the latest software before enabling it.

- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Lockdown Mode.
- Tap Turn On Lockdown Mode and confirm.
- Choose Turn On & Restart, then enter your device passcode.
For broader Apple-device coverage, enable the mode separately on each supported iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Enabling it on an iPhone also enables it on a paired supported Apple Watch. Apple recommends updating each supported device first (About Lockdown Mode; Manage Lockdown Mode settings).

Apple provides ways to exclude some websites and apps, and current guidance also covers excluding contacts from messaging limits on supported software. Use an exception only when necessary for a trusted app, site, or contact: each exclusion reduces the mode’s protections and may increase security risk (About Lockdown Mode).

If your device is already enrolled in mobile device management (MDM), that enrollment remains. Administrators can continue managing profiles on an already-managed device, but Lockdown Mode itself is not an MDM-configurable setting.
