Can you use an iPad to control a smart home?

Check accessory compatibility before buying
Compatibility depends on the light, lock, thermostat, or other accessory as well as the screen. Apple says Matter accessories can be added to Apple Home through the Home app or a HomeKit-based app, but a Matter label alone does not establish that every feature of a product will work in every ecosystem. What is Apple HomePad—and what is actually known?
“HomePad” is an informal name in reporting about a possible Apple home display, not a product specification established by Apple. A September 30, 2026 Tom’s Guide article attributed an October 13 announcement date to Bloomberg reporting and described a rumored screen-based smart-home hub. Apple’s published Home materials explain the existing app and hub arrangement; they do not establish that a future display will replace an iPad or serve as the sole hub for every Apple Home feature. Which one should you choose?
Choose an iPad if you need a device now
- You want a screen for Apple Home today, not an unconfirmed future product.
- You will also use a tablet for ordinary tasks beyond controlling accessories.
- You are willing to check the current iPad model and configuration against your budget and needs.
An iPad can be carried around or placed on a stand in a shared area. A stand is an optional practical way to position a tablet, not a guarantee of permanent installation; the sources reviewed do not establish how a particular setup will handle charging, screen wake behavior, or mounting.
Wait for official HomePad details if a dedicated display is your priority

- List the accessories and features you need. Check Apple Home or Matter compatibility for each exact accessory, then identify whether you need local control, automations, notifications, or remote access.
