Choose the smart-home platform that already fits your household’s phones, devices, and accessories. Apple Home is a natural first choice for a home centered on iPhone, Apple TV, or HomePod; Google Home is a natural first choice for a home using Android or Google/Nest products. Neither is a universal winner: check your exact accessory models, the features you need, and whether your devices require a hub or Thread border router.
Apple Home vs. Google Home: what should you check first?
Start with the accessories you already own—or plan to buy—rather than choosing by brand reputation. An accessory may work with one platform, both, or neither, and support for a basic function does not necessarily mean every feature is available in both apps.
- Write down each exact model. Check the manufacturer’s listing for Apple Home or HomeKit support, Google Home support, or Matter certification. A product family name alone may not be precise enough to confirm compatibility.
- Check the specific functions you need. Confirm that the target app supports the accessory category and the controls or automations you care about. Matter certification alone does not guarantee identical feature support across platforms.
- Identify the connection and hub requirements. Determine whether the accessory uses Wi-Fi or Thread, and whether your chosen platform needs a compatible hub or Thread border router for the functions you want.
Apple describes Home as a way to add, control, and automate HomeKit and Matter accessories, including lights, locks, and thermostats. Google’s Matter guide lists supported hubs and notes that platforms add support for Matter device types at different times. Check the current Google Matter compatibility guidance alongside the accessory maker’s specifications.
Which platform fits your phones and existing devices?
Apple Home for an Apple-centered household
If people in your home already use iPhone and you own Apple Home-compatible accessories, Apple Home is a practical first platform to evaluate. The Home app can organize accessories by room and category, create scenes, and automate actions. Apple documents triggers based on time of day, location, an accessory action, or a sensor. Those capabilities are not, by themselves, evidence that Apple Home is categorically better at automation than Google Home.
Apple’s overview of the app and compatible accessory types is at Apple Home.
Google Home for a Google-, Nest-, or Android-centered household
If your household already uses Android or Google/Nest products, Google Home is a sensible starting point. Google says the app requires a Google Account, home Wi-Fi, and either an Android device on Android 9 or later or an iPhone or iPad on iOS 17 or later. These minimum operating-system requirements can change; consult Google Home app requirements for the latest supported versions.
For either platform, an existing phone ecosystem can make setup more convenient, but it does not override accessory compatibility. Verify the exact model and the controls you expect to use before committing to an app.
Do you need a hub for Apple Home or Google Home?
Hub requirements depend on the platform, the accessory, and the task. In particular, Apple’s general hub setup guidance and its newer local-control troubleshooting guidance describe different contexts. Do not treat “Matter works without a hub” or “Matter always requires a hub” as an unconditional rule.

Apple Home: distinguish local Matter control from the recommended hub setup
Apple identifies Apple TV 4K and HomePod speakers as home hub devices. A hub supports remote access and automations. Apple’s home-hub setup page says, “You must set up a home hub to add Matter accessories to the Home app.” However, Apple’s current troubleshooting guidance says an iPhone running iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories locally without a home hub; Apple recommends a hub for the best experience. These statements apply to different guidance contexts, so check Apple’s home hub setup information and Matter accessory troubleshooting guidance for your setup.
Local control on an iPhone is not the same as having the full hub-supported experience. It also does not provide Thread infrastructure where a Thread accessory needs it.
Google Home: confirm the hub and its radio capabilities
Google lists hubs that support Matter over Wi-Fi and a smaller set that also function as Thread border routers. Its guidance names the Google Home Speaker (2026), Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro, and Google TV Streamer (4K) as Wi-Fi-and-Thread options. Other listed Matter hubs may support Wi-Fi Matter without Thread. Model availability and capabilities can change, so verify the exact device on Google’s Matter hub list before relying on it.
Does Matter work with both Apple Home and Google Home?
Matter is intended to improve compatibility across certified smart-home ecosystems, and Google’s guidance describes setting up a Matter device with multiple platforms. That can make Matter-certified products useful in a mixed-platform home. It does not guarantee that every accessory category is supported at the same time, or that controls, setup steps, and advanced features will be identical in Apple Home and Google Home.

For a shared home, check that the exact device supports Matter and that each intended platform supports its category and required functions. If you want to use one Matter device in both ecosystems, verify the manufacturer’s instructions and the current platform guidance for the multi-platform setup process rather than assuming a single pairing automatically makes it available in both apps.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need a Thread border router?
Only if the accessory uses Thread and your setup needs Thread connectivity. Matter and Thread are related but not interchangeable: Matter is a smart-home standard, while Thread is a networking technology used by some accessories. A hub that supports Matter over Wi-Fi does not necessarily support Thread.
Apple lists HomePod mini, HomePod (2nd generation), Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet, and supported third-party border routers among its Thread-capable options. Check the exact model and configuration in Apple’s home hub guidance. For Google, confirm that the particular hub appears in the Wi-Fi-and-Thread group in Google’s current compatibility list.
How to choose between Apple Home and Google Home
| Your situation | Practical first step | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Most household phones and devices are Apple products | Evaluate Apple Home first. | Exact accessory support, required features, and whether a home hub or Thread border router is needed. |
| Your household uses Android or Google/Nest products | Evaluate Google Home first. | The exact accessory model and whether your chosen Google hub supports Wi-Fi Matter, Thread, or both. |
| You want to avoid being tied to one ecosystem | Favor Matter-certified accessories when they meet your needs. | Support for the device category and functions in every intended platform; Matter certification alone does not ensure feature parity. |
| You want the same device available in Apple Home and Google Home | Check Matter support and the device maker’s multi-platform instructions. | Whether both platforms support that device and its required controls, and what commissioning steps are needed. |
| You are buying a Thread accessory | Choose a compatible Thread border router for the platform you plan to use. | Exact model and, where relevant, configuration; Matter-over-Wi-Fi support alone is not enough. |
Use the current Apple and Google support pages for final compatibility checks. Hub models, operating-system minimums, and supported Matter categories are version-sensitive, so an older list may not reflect what is available for your setup.
