Use Apple Home if your home is built around iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Siri, and compatible HomeKit or Matter accessories. Use ADT Control if you have an ADT security system and need alarm arm/disarm, professional-service integration, cameras, sensors, locks, and climate controls in one app.

These apps are not interchangeable security products. Apple Home is a device-control platform; ADT Control is the mobile interface for an ADT Command security installation. A home can use both, but what they share depends on the ADT equipment, supported integrations, and the Apple accessories installed.

What Apple Home and ADT Control actually are

Apple Home is a general smart-home controller

Apple Home is Apple’s app for organizing and controlling compatible accessories from iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Siri, and other Apple devices. Apple says the app brings compatible third-party accessories together, supports Matter devices, groups accessories by room and favorites, creates scenes and automations, shows multiple camera feeds, and sends activity notifications. See Apple’s overview at Apple’s Home app page.

The platform is built around accessory compatibility rather than a security-service contract. A light, lock, thermostat, sensor, or camera must support HomeKit or Matter to appear natively in Apple Home. Apple’s Matter documentation says iOS 16.1 and later can control compatible Matter accessories through Apple Home, Siri, and Control Center. Supported categories include lights, locks, thermostats, and HomeKit Secure Video cameras; details are documented at Apple’s Matter support page.

ADT Control is tied to an ADT security installation

ADT Control is the mobile interface for ADT Command. ADT lists remote arming and disarming, instant status alerts, door-unlock notifications, lighting control, door-lock control, climate scheduling, one-tap scenes, geofencing, live camera streaming, and video recording among its functions. The app’s capabilities depend on an ADT-compatible security system and the devices connected to it.

ADT’s own description is explicit: “Arm or disarm your security system from virtually anywhere.” That is a service-linked function, not simply a smart-home automation feature. ADT also says mobile notifications, remote control, video streaming, and video recording require a working internet connection and Wi-Fi. Review the current feature descriptions on ADT Control and ADT’s apps page.

Choose Apple Home when your main problem is managing devices

Apple Home is the better default when the household already uses Apple hardware and wants one interface for products from multiple compatible manufacturers. The app’s value comes from unifying devices that otherwise have separate apps: lights can be placed in rooms, a thermostat can participate in a scene, and compatible cameras can be viewed alongside other Home accessories.

Best-fit households

  • Most residents use iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or Siri.
  • You are buying or already own HomeKit or Matter accessories from more than one manufacturer.
  • You want scenes such as a single “Good night” action that changes several devices at once.
  • You want Apple notifications and, where supported, multiple camera feeds or HomeKit Secure Video features.
  • You need smart-home control but do not need ADT’s alarm, monitoring, or service workflows.

Matter broadens the selection of compatible accessories because a Matter-certified product can be designed to work across major smart-home platforms. Apple’s support for Matter begins with iOS 16.1 and later, but each accessory still has to be compatible and correctly commissioned. Compatibility is therefore a product-by-product question, not a guarantee that every smart-home device will appear in Apple Home.

What Apple Home does not provide

Apple Home can control devices and deliver notifications, but it is not an ADT monitoring substitute. It does not turn a collection of HomeKit or Matter accessories into an ADT-monitored alarm system. If your priority is a professionally serviced security installation, the relevant app is the one connected to that service: ADT Control.

Choose ADT Control when security-service functions come first

ADT Control makes sense when the household already has an ADT Command installation or is choosing ADT specifically for integrated security and automation. Its differentiator is the connection between the mobile app and ADT equipment, rather than support for a broad, independent accessory market.

Functions that point to ADT Control

  • Arm or disarm the ADT security system while away from home.
  • Receive alerts when system status changes or a door unlocks.
  • View live streams from supported ADT cameras and access supported recordings.
  • Control ADT-compatible locks, lights, and thermostats.
  • Use one-tap scenes, schedules, or geofencing with supported equipment.
  • Keep security controls and ADT service features in the same account and app.

ADT’s apps page describes scenarios such as controlling lights and setting the temperature before arriving home. Those conveniences are conditional: the installation must include compatible devices, the account must have the applicable service, and the system must be online. Features can also vary by market and package, so confirm availability before signing up or buying add-on equipment.

What ADT Control does not replace

ADT Control is not a universal controller for every smart-home product. A device may work with Apple Home, another platform, or an ADT integration without appearing in all three places. The ADT equipment model, account configuration, and supported integrations determine the actual device list.

Can Apple Home replace ADT?

No. Apple Home can replace a collection of separate device apps for compatible accessories, but it does not replace an ADT security installation, ADT monitoring relationship, or ADT-specific alarm workflow. Apple Home can show notifications from compatible accessories and cameras; that is different from having ADT equipment and service respond to an alarm event.

If the goal is simply to control lights, locks, thermostats, and cameras, Apple Home may be sufficient when every device is HomeKit- or Matter-compatible. If the goal includes ADT alarm arm/disarm, ADT sensors, ADT cameras, or ADT service integration, retain ADT Control for those functions.

Can ADT Control work with Apple Home?

Sometimes, but there is no blanket “all devices sync” promise. The exact bridge depends on the ADT equipment, the Apple Home or Matter support of each accessory, and any officially supported integration. A camera, lock, thermostat, or sensor might be visible in one app but not the other.

How to evaluate a mixed setup

  1. List the exact models. Record the ADT panel, cameras, locks, thermostat, sensors, and any third-party accessories.
  2. Check each product’s compatibility label. Look for HomeKit or Matter support for Apple Home and ADT compatibility for ADT Control.
  3. Separate native support from integrations. A device that works through a limited integration may not expose every setting, camera feature, or automation trigger.
  4. Choose one app for each job. Keep alarm arm/disarm and ADT status in ADT Control; use Apple Home for Apple scenes and compatible multi-brand accessories.
  5. Test before relying on automation. Confirm that status changes, notifications, camera access, and lock or thermostat commands arrive and execute as expected.

Do not assume that adding an accessory to Apple Home will make it controllable through ADT Control, or that enrolling an ADT device will make it a native Apple Home accessory. Integration availability is equipment-specific.

Apple Home remote control: do you need an Apple TV or HomePod?

Apple identifies Apple TV 4K, HomePod, and HomePod mini as devices that can act as a smart-home control center. A home hub is relevant when you want remote access and automations to continue when your iPhone is away from the house. Without the appropriate hub configuration, local control may work while you are home, but remote monitoring and automation behavior can be limited.

Practical buying decision

  • Choose an Apple TV 4K home hub if you also want a living-room streaming device and have a suitable television.
  • Choose a HomePod mini home hub if you want a compact hub with Siri voice control in a room where a speaker is useful.
  • Use more than one Apple home hub when you want resilience or better coverage across a larger home; Apple determines the active hub in the Home configuration.

After installing the hub, verify that the same Apple account and Home are used across devices, then test remote access from cellular data rather than Wi-Fi. Apple’s iPhone guide explains Home controls and setup at Intro to Home on iPhone.

ADT Control requirements for cameras, locks, and climate

ADT Control’s smart-home functions are only as useful as the equipment connected to the ADT system. Alarm control requires an ADT-compatible security installation. Camera streaming and recording require supported cameras, an online system, and the applicable service. Lock control requires compatible locks; climate scheduling requires a supported thermostat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cameras

ADT describes live camera streaming and video recording in its app materials. A working internet connection and Wi-Fi are required for those mobile functions. If a camera is offline, troubleshoot the network and the ADT equipment before assuming the app itself is defective.

Locks

ADT Control can expose door-lock controls when the installation includes compatible locks. A lock that appears in Apple Home may not be controllable in ADT Control unless the ADT system supports that model or integration.

Thermostats

Climate scheduling and remote temperature changes require a compatible thermostat and the appropriate ADT configuration. ADT maintains a separate smart-thermostat information page at ADT Smart Thermostats; availability and terms should be verified for your location and package.

Privacy, cloud dependence, and outages

Apple Home’s data model

Apple emphasizes Apple-device-centered control and privacy features for compatible HomeKit Secure Video cameras. Matter support lets compatible accessories work across platforms, but privacy and recording behavior still depend on the accessory, Apple account, home hub, and chosen service configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ADT Control’s connectivity model

ADT states that notifications, remote control, video streaming, and video recording require working internet and Wi-Fi. That means an outage can prevent app commands or camera access even if some local equipment remains powered. Cellular backup, alarm signaling, and monitoring behavior are installation- and plan-dependent; do not infer those details from the app alone.

Questions to ask before choosing

  • Which functions must work when the internet is unavailable?
  • Do you need professional monitoring, or only local device automation?
  • Are camera recordings stored under Apple’s supported HomeKit Secure Video setup or through ADT’s service?
  • Who can access the account, and which notifications are enabled?

Cost and equipment requirements

Apple Home has an à-la-carte cost structure. You buy compatible accessories individually, and an Apple TV 4K, HomePod, or HomePod mini may be needed for remote control and automation. There is no single Apple Home package price because the total depends on the devices and hub you select.

ADT pricing cannot be represented honestly as one universal figure. The total depends on the security package, monitoring plan, installation, equipment, location, and contract. Ask for a written, location-specific quote that separates equipment, installation, recurring monitoring, financing, cancellation terms, and optional cameras or smart-home devices.

Setup checklist: Apple Home

  1. Update your Apple devices. Matter support in Apple’s documentation applies to iOS 16.1 and later.
  2. Confirm compatibility. Check that each light, lock, thermostat, sensor, or camera supports HomeKit or Matter.
  3. Add accessories in the Home app. Follow the accessory’s pairing instructions and assign it to the correct room.
  4. Create only the scenes you will use. Examples include arrival, leaving, bedtime, or a temperature change paired with lighting.
  5. Add a home hub when needed. Use Apple TV 4K, HomePod, or HomePod mini for remote control and automation requirements.
  6. Test notifications and remote access. Leave the home Wi-Fi network and verify that the commands and alerts behave as expected.

Setup checklist: ADT Control

  1. Verify the ADT account and Command-compatible system. The app cannot provide ADT functions without the corresponding service and equipment.
  2. Install or confirm supported devices. Check cameras, sensors, locks, lights, and thermostat models against ADT’s current compatibility information.
  3. Sign in to the official ADT app. Use the account associated with the installation and enable the notifications you need.
  4. Test basic status first. Confirm that the app shows the correct armed or disarmed state before creating scenes or geofences.
  5. Test each device separately. Stream a camera, lock and unlock a supported door, change the thermostat, and verify alerts.
  6. Document recovery steps. Keep local control instructions and ADT support details available for internet, Wi-Fi, or equipment failures.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Apple Home works locally but not remotely

  • Check that an Apple TV 4K, HomePod, or HomePod mini is configured as a home hub.
  • Confirm the hub and accessories have power and internet access.
  • Verify that the controlling device uses the same Apple Home and account configuration.
  • Test from cellular data to distinguish a remote-access problem from a local Wi-Fi problem.

An accessory is missing from Apple Home

  • Confirm that the product supports HomeKit or Matter, not merely a vendor-specific app.
  • Check whether the Matter accessory was commissioned to the intended home.
  • Update the accessory firmware and Apple device software as directed by the manufacturer.
  • Use the accessory’s own app for functions that are not exposed through Apple Home.

ADT Control shows the system but a device is unavailable

  • Check the ADT equipment’s power, network connection, and Wi-Fi.
  • Confirm that the device is included in the ADT package and account configuration.
  • Check whether the problem affects one device or all remote functions.
  • Contact ADT when the installation, monitoring plan, or equipment compatibility is unclear.

Notifications or video fail intermittently

ADT specifically requires working internet and Wi-Fi for mobile notifications, remote control, video streaming, and video recording. Start with the network connection, then check the camera or security panel status and account permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which app should you use?

For an Apple-centered home with compatible products from several manufacturers, make Apple Home the primary controller and add an Apple TV 4K or HomePod-family hub when remote access or automation requires one. For an ADT customer whose priority is alarm control, ADT sensors, cameras, locks, climate controls, and ADT service integration, make ADT Control the primary security app. If both systems are installed, assign security-service tasks to ADT Control and general Apple-compatible automation to Apple Home, verifying device-by-device support rather than assuming the ecosystems are fully interchangeable.
