Apple blocked iDict in January 2015 by adding rate limits to iCloud login attempts. The GitHub proof of concept automated repeated password guesses against Apple IDs; after Apple’s change, its uploader warned, “iDict is patched.” The incident concerned a weakness in server-side login protections—not a physical hacking device—and should not be confused with Apple’s separate controls for device passcodes and account recovery.

What was the iDict iCloud hack?

iDict was a software proof of concept published on GitHub. It attempted a dictionary attack: automatically trying passwords against a targeted Apple ID rather than guessing manually. PCWorld reported that the tool came with a dictionary of 500 commonly used passwords, which users could expand. SecurityWeek described the tool as claiming to bypass account-lockout restrictions and secondary authentication; that was the tool’s claim, not proof that it could defeat every account’s protections.

Malwarebytes senior security researcher Jerome Segura said iDict automated repeated login attempts from a local web server. The uploader, using the alias Pr0x13, wrote, “This bug is painfully obvious and was only a matter of time before it was privately used for malicious or nefarious activities.”

How did Apple stop iDict?

Apple began enforcing rate limits on iDict login attempts about a day after the tool became available, according to PCWorld’s January 8, 2015 report. Rate limiting restricts repeated attempts, making automated guessing impractical. The uploader then posted, “iDict is patched,” and advised people to stop using it because continued attempts could lock accounts.

The reports do not establish that iDict caused earlier celebrity-account compromises. Those accounts were described as targets of attacks involving usernames, passwords, and security questions; that background is not evidence that this particular tool was responsible. The cited reports also do not give a confirmed victim count or financial-loss total for the iDict incident.

Why does two-factor authentication help?

A guessed password alone is less useful when signing in also requires a second factor, such as access to a device the account holder owns. Segura noted that two-factor authentication reduces the risk of this kind of password attack because the attacker needs more than the password. It does not make a weak or reused password a good choice, but it adds a separate obstacle to account access.

How many attempts does Apple allow?

There is no single attempt limit that applies to every Apple security system. The 2015 iDict case involved repeated attempts at server-side iCloud login. Apple’s current documentation describes different controls for other processes, including iCloud Keychain escrow and on-device passcode derivation; these are not the mechanism Apple used to block iDict.

Protection What Apple documents What happens
iCloud login rate limiting (2015 iDict incident) Apple began limiting repeated iDict login attempts; the cited report does not state a numeric threshold. Automated guessing was curtailed; the tool’s uploader said it was patched.
iCloud Keychain escrow authentication Apple’s 2024 security document allows 10 authentication attempts to retrieve an escrow record. After the 10th failed attempt, the record is destroyed and the keychain is lost.
Device passcode derivation Apple’s current Apple Platform Security guide says the iteration count is calibrated so one attempt takes approximately 80 milliseconds. The delay makes repeated passcode guesses slower; it is a device-passcode control, not an iCloud-login limit.

The consequences differ as well: a login rate limit can lock an account temporarily, while the documented escrow attempt cap can permanently destroy the escrow record after too many failures. These protections address different attack surfaces and should not be treated as interchangeable.

How to protect your Apple Account

  • Use a unique, hard-to-guess password rather than reusing one from another service.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication so a password alone is not sufficient to sign in.
  • If you cannot access your account, use Apple’s official account-recovery process instead of repeatedly guessing credentials.
