Verdict: AirPods 5 are the strongest reason yet to choose an open-fit Apple earbud when you want better sound and useful noise control without paying Pro-level money. The $129 model delivers richer, more detailed audio than AirPods 4, plus Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), Transparency, Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness. Its open design cannot block voices, typing or high-frequency noise as effectively as a sealed in-ear model, but it remains comfortable and natural for everyday listening. For most buyers, the $129 AirPods 5 are the value choice; the $149 version is the smarter practical purchase if you want wireless charging and on-stem volume control.
AirPods 5 at a glance
| Model | US launch price | Design and core features | Apple-rated battery | Who should buy it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AirPods 5 | $129 (September 9, 2026 launch) | Open-ear fit; ANC, Transparency, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Adaptive EQ and Personalized Spatial Audio; H2 chip | Apple does not publish the 22-hour case figure for this version in the cited announcement | Price-sensitive buyers who want Apple’s main audio features |
| AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case | $149 (September 9, 2026 launch) | Same open-ear design and audio features, plus wireless charging and on-stem volume swipe | Up to five hours of ANC playback per charge and up to 22 hours with the case | Feature-focused buyers who charge wirelessly or adjust volume often |
Apple says AirPods 5 can reduce external noise by up to 50 percent more than AirPods 4 with ANC. That is an Apple-published maximum, not an independent laboratory result, so treat it as a generation-to-generation claim rather than a guarantee in every environment.
What AirPods 5 are—and what they are not
AirPods 5 are open-ear true-wireless earbuds. They sit at the entrance of the ear rather than forming the deep, sealed seal used by AirPods Pro-style designs. That choice is central to the product: you get a less plugged-up sensation and easier awareness of nearby speech, but you also give up some passive isolation before ANC even starts.
Both AirPods 5 versions use Apple’s H2 chip and support Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Adaptive EQ and Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking. Apple also lists Voice Isolation, studio-quality audio recording, dual beamforming microphones, an inward-facing microphone, an optical in-ear sensor, motion- and speech-detecting accelerometers and a force sensor.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The result is not a cut-down feature demonstration. AirPods 5 bring the headline processing features associated with Apple’s more expensive earbuds to the company’s least expensive ANC model. The compromise is physical isolation, not an absence of modes.
Open fit versus sealed fit
An open fit can feel more natural during long listening sessions because your ears are not closed off by silicone tips. It also makes it easier to hear a colleague, a transit announcement or a notification without removing an earbud. The trade-off is predictable: external sound can leak around the ear, and ANC has less physical isolation to work with.
That distinction matters more than a specification sheet. If your priority is comfort, awareness and a non-sealed sensation, AirPods 5 are purpose-built for it. If your priority is the quietest possible flight, train carriage or office, the sealed fit of AirPods Pro remains the more appropriate design.

AirPods 5 at $129
Apple launched AirPods 5 in the United States at $129 on September 9, 2026. This is the model to choose when you want the new sound tuning and ANC features while keeping the initial cost as low as possible. It includes the same H2-based processing and open-ear feature set as the higher-priced version.
The standard case is the reason the two models are not interchangeable in practice. Apple’s cited announcement does not assign this version the Wireless Charging Case model’s 22-hour total ANC-listening figure, so do not assume the larger runtime number applies to both packages.
AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case at $149
The $149 version costs $20 more and adds a Wireless Charging Case. The case works with Apple Watch chargers, Qi-compatible chargers and USB-C. This model also adds on-stem volume swipe, allowing volume changes from the earbud instead of reaching for a phone or voice control.

Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Apple rates this version for up to five hours of ANC playback on one charge and up to 22 hours of ANC listening with the case. Those are maximum battery figures under Apple’s test conditions; actual runtime varies with volume, wireless features and usage.
For a buyer who already has a wireless charging pad, the extra $20 buys a daily convenience rather than a cosmetic upgrade. Even without a charging pad, the on-stem volume control can justify the difference for commuters, runners and anyone who adjusts volume frequently. If neither feature matters, retain the $20 and buy the $129 model.
Sound quality: richer than AirPods 4, with restrained bass
Tom’s Guide described AirPods 5 as sounding “rich and detailed” across genres. The review found no tinniness at the top of the treble and reported controlled mids. Compared with AirPods 4, the impression was a fuller, more resolved presentation rather than a minor tonal tweak.
Treble and vocal detail
The absence of the harsh, metallic edge that can make inexpensive earbuds tiring is one of the most useful listening improvements. Cymbals, consonants and electronic textures remain present without dominating the mix in Tom’s Guide’s sessions. That does not mean the treble is rolled off; it means the reviewer heard detail without the brittle emphasis that can make bright recordings unpleasant.
Bass character
Bass is controlled and balanced rather than propulsive. AirPods 5 can provide a clean low-end foundation for pop, podcasts with music beds and acoustic recordings, but they are not tuned around a heavy, physical thump. Because the fit is open, the earbud also cannot create the same sealed pressure sensation as an in-ear Pro model.

Adaptive EQ and Spatial Audio
Adaptive EQ is part of both AirPods 5 configurations. Apple says the earbuds use an inward-facing microphone and other sensors as part of the system; the practical goal is to keep tonal balance consistent as the earbuds sit in your ears.
Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking is also supported. It can make compatible music, films and shows feel wider and more anchored as you move your head. Spatial Audio is a processing mode, not evidence that every recording will sound better, so evaluate it with the content you actually use.
How good is AirPods 5 ANC?
AirPods 5 ANC is useful for an open-fit earbud, but it is not at AirPods Pro level. Tom’s Guide tested the earbuds against city noise measured at 68 dB. The reviewer could still hear high-frequency sounds such as car horns and indistinct chatter. In ordinary use, typing and nearby conversations remained audible.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →That result is consistent with the hardware design. ANC can reduce steady, lower-frequency rumble, yet an open fit leaves more paths for voices, keyboard clicks and sharp transient sounds to reach the ear. AirPods 5 therefore make a noisy café, office or street less fatiguing rather than silent.
What ANC handles well
- Steady background noise is reduced enough to make music and podcasts easier to follow.
- The H2-powered processing gives the $129 model a feature normally associated with more expensive earbuds.
- Apple’s claim of up to 50 percent more external-noise reduction than AirPods 4 with ANC indicates a substantial intended improvement over that predecessor, although the figure is a maximum claim.
What ANC does not erase
- High-frequency sounds, including car horns, remain audible in the 68 dB city-sounds test.
- Indistinct chatter, typing and nearby conversations can still break through during normal use.
- The open fit cannot match the passive isolation and maximum quiet of a sealed Pro-style earbud.
The right expectation is “less noise,” not “silence.” At this price and with this fit, that is a fair trade for comfort and awareness.
Transparency, Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness
Transparency mode is one of AirPods 5’s strongest practical features. Tom’s Guide found speech and notifications easy to hear with Transparency enabled. That makes it useful when ordering coffee, listening for a platform announcement or speaking briefly without removing an earbud.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Adaptive Audio is designed to balance noise control and awareness instead of forcing you to choose a fixed mode every time conditions change. Conversation Awareness can lower or adjust playback when you begin speaking, helping a short interaction feel less disruptive. The exact effect depends on the surrounding noise and your voice, but these modes address the main weakness of ANC earbuds: having to manage them manually while moving between environments.
Voice Isolation and the dual beamforming microphones are intended to improve voice capture. Apple also lists studio-quality audio recording. Those are product capabilities, not a guarantee that AirPods 5 replace a dedicated microphone; recording quality still depends on the room, the source device and the person speaking.
Battery life and charging
For the Wireless Charging Case model, Apple rates up to five hours of ANC playback on a single charge and up to 22 hours of ANC listening with the case. The word “up to” matters: higher volume, frequent microphone use, Spatial Audio processing and changing between modes can reduce real-world endurance.
The case’s charging flexibility is unusually useful within the AirPods 5 lineup. You can use an Apple Watch charger, a Qi-compatible charger or USB-C. That lets the $149 model fit into an existing desk, bedside or travel charging setup without requiring a proprietary charging surface.
The $129 model remains the sensible choice if you normally charge by cable and do not need on-stem volume control. Choose the $149 model when the case’s charging options or its stated 22-hour total runtime directly match your routine.

Choose AirPods 5 over AirPods 4 when sound and ANC matter
AirPods 5 make the clearest case for themselves against AirPods 4 with ANC. Apple claims up to 50 percent more external-noise reduction, while Tom’s Guide heard richer detail, controlled bass and smoother treble. If your current AirPods 4 sound thin or let too much noise through, those are meaningful improvements rather than a name change.

Choose AirPods Pro when isolation is the priority
AirPods Pro remain the better fit for frequent flights, loud public transport and anyone who wants voices and sharp sounds reduced as aggressively as possible. The sealed design gives ANC a physical advantage that AirPods 5 cannot overcome. The trade-off is a more closed-in fit, which some listeners find less comfortable for long periods.
Choose AirPods 5 when awareness and comfort are the priority
AirPods 5 are the better match for offices, walks, errands and mixed environments where you want music but still need to hear people and alerts. Transparency makes deliberate listening easy, while the open fit avoids the pressure associated with sealed tips.
Which AirPods 5 model should you buy?
- Buy AirPods 5 at $129 if you want the lowest entry price, the H2 feature set and improved sound over AirPods 4 without paying for charging hardware you will not use.
- Buy AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case at $149 if you own an Apple Watch or Qi charger, want USB-C flexibility, adjust volume often or value the published up-to-22-hour case figure.
- Skip both for a sealed Pro model if maximum isolation is more important than an open, aware fit.
The $20 difference is not buying better drivers or stronger ANC. Both versions share the open-ear acoustic design and core processing features. It buys charging convenience, on-stem volume swipe and the larger battery figure Apple publishes for the Wireless Charging Case model.
Strengths and limitations
Strengths
- Richer, more detailed sound than AirPods 4 in Tom’s Guide’s listening.
- Controlled bass and treble that avoids the reviewer’s reported tinniness.
- ANC, Transparency, Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness at a $129 launch price.
- Open fit that keeps speech and surroundings accessible.
- H2 chip, Adaptive EQ, Personalized Spatial Audio and dynamic head tracking.
- Wireless Charging Case option supports Apple Watch chargers, Qi and USB-C.
Limitations
- Open-fit ANC does not match AirPods Pro isolation.
- Car horns, chatter, typing and nearby conversations can remain audible.
- Bass is balanced rather than aggressively physical.
- The standard model does not share the Wireless Charging Case model’s published up-to-22-hour total-runtime figure in the cited announcement.
- The extra $20 is worthwhile only if wireless charging, on-stem volume swipe or the larger stated runtime matters to you.
Final buying advice
AirPods 5 punch above their price because Apple improved the part you hear every minute: the tuning. Tom’s Guide’s richer, more detailed presentation and smoother treble make them a clear step beyond AirPods 4 for many listeners. ANC is a useful bonus rather than a Pro replacement; it lowers background noise but does not erase sharp sounds or nearby speech through the open fit.
Start with the $129 AirPods 5 if value is your main concern. Spend $149 when the Wireless Charging Case, Apple Watch or Qi charging, USB-C flexibility, on-stem volume swipe and Apple’s up-to-22-hour case rating fit your routine. That is the practical upgrade—not a promise of stronger sound or ANC, but a better day-to-day charging and control experience.
