An API gateway, load balancer and reverse proxy can all sit between clients and services, but they solve different primary problems. A reverse proxy forwards and hides backend services; a load balancer distributes connections among healthy backends; an API gateway applies API-specific controls such as authentication, quotas, validation and consumer analytics. They are overlapping roles rather than mutually exclusive products, so the right design may use one, two or all three. Start with the traffic protocol and the control you must enforce, then select the smallest component that provides it.

What is the difference between an API gateway, a load balancer and a reverse proxy?

The distinction is easiest to understand as three operating roles. A reverse proxy is the general intermediary, a load balancer is optimized for distributing traffic, and an API gateway adds a policy and lifecycle layer for API consumers.

Component Primary responsibility Typical decisions What it does not automatically imply
Reverse proxy Accept client connections and forward requests to internal services while hiding backend topology Host or path routing, TLS termination, caching, connection handling A consistent API authentication, quota or developer-management model
Load balancer Select a healthy backend instance or pool for each connection or request Health checks, balancing algorithms, weights, locality and failover API keys, request validation or consumer analytics
API gateway Expose APIs through a controlled entry point and enforce consumer-facing policy Authentication, authorization, rate limits, quotas, validation, transformation and API observability Traditional multi-node balancing for every downstream service

Products blur these boundaries. A reverse proxy can include balancing, a Layer 7 load balancer can perform selected authentication or routing, and an API gateway normally performs reverse-proxy forwarding. Evaluate the actual implementation and configuration rather than relying on the product category.

What does a reverse proxy do?

A reverse proxy receives traffic on behalf of one or more services and sends it to the appropriate backend. Clients see the proxy’s address instead of internal hostnames and ports, which simplifies exposure and prevents the backend topology from becoming part of the public interface.

Common reverse-proxy functions

  • Host and path routing: send api.example.test or /billing to a selected service.
  • TLS termination: decrypt HTTPS at the edge and use a separate connection to the backend when that is acceptable for your security model.
  • Caching and compression: serve cacheable responses or reduce transfer size before requests reach an application.
  • Connection management: maintain client-facing connections while opening, reusing or closing backend connections according to policy.
  • Topology concealment: keep service addresses, ports and internal routing details private.

Microsoft describes this role succinctly: “It acts as a reverse proxy and routes clients requests to the appropriate services.” General-purpose reverse-proxy software can also provide load balancing, SSL termination and Layer 7 routing, but those optional features do not turn every deployment into an API-management platform.

Where a reverse proxy stops

A reverse proxy may authenticate requests, limit rates or rewrite payloads if its product and configuration support those functions. The category itself does not promise a uniform consumer policy model, API catalog, subscription workflow or API-specific analytics. If several teams need centrally managed keys, quotas and validation rules, confirm those capabilities explicitly instead of assuming that ordinary forwarding rules are sufficient.

What does a load balancer do?

A load balancer’s defining job is to distribute traffic across backend instances or pools and avoid sending traffic to unhealthy targets. It normally combines health checks with an algorithm such as round-robin, least connections, weighted selection or locality-aware routing.

Layer 4 versus Layer 7 load balancing

Choice Understands Useful when Trade-off
Layer 4 TCP, UDP or other IP-level connection information You need high-throughput transport balancing, non-HTTP protocols or minimal application inspection It cannot make decisions based on HTTP paths, headers or API methods
Layer 7 HTTP(S) requests and attributes such as host, path, headers or methods You need application-aware routing, HTTP termination or per-request rules It adds protocol processing and may not support arbitrary transport traffic

Choose the layer from the traffic you actually carry. HTTP and HTTPS applications generally fit Layer 7. TCP, UDP, source-packet preservation or protocols that are not HTTP can require Layer 4 or passthrough behavior. External versus internal placement, global versus regional backends and the location of TLS termination are separate decisions.

Proxy and passthrough load balancers

A proxy load balancer terminates the client connection and opens another connection to the backend. That enables inspection, TLS termination and application-aware decisions, but the backend may see the balancer as the immediate peer unless client information is forwarded in a trusted way.

A passthrough load balancer preserves packet information and lets the backend terminate the connection. This can retain source-address semantics and support protocols that need end-to-end transport handling, but it provides less opportunity for HTTP-level routing or policy enforcement at the balancing layer.

What health checks really mean

A health check usually tests whether a target can accept traffic, not whether every user operation will succeed. A service can return a successful health response while a dependency is failing, or fail a check because of a temporary overload. Define checks that represent safe eligibility for traffic, set realistic thresholds and verify that failover behavior matches your recovery objectives.

What makes an API gateway different?

An API gateway is an API-focused entry point. It combines reverse-proxy routing with policies that identify consumers, protect APIs and expose operational data at the API level.

Typical gateway responsibilities

  • Authentication and authorization: validate tokens, API keys, client certificates or other credentials and apply access rules.
  • Rate limiting and quotas: restrict requests by consumer, credential, route, plan or time window.
  • Request validation: reject malformed parameters, headers or bodies before they reach an application.
  • Transformation: change headers, shapes or protocols when clients and services use different contracts.
  • Consumer analytics: report usage by API, application, credential or customer rather than only by backend host.
  • API observability: expose route-level latency, errors and policy outcomes.
  • Protocol integration: connect HTTP APIs with selected backend protocols or direct integrations, depending on the product.
  • Lifecycle controls: publish versions, document endpoints or manage access plans when those features are included.

Gateway routing is normally Layer 7 because it needs to understand HTTP requests and API semantics. It can terminate TLS and enforce mutual TLS, but the exact identity, transformation and analytics features vary by implementation.

Why an API gateway is not automatically a load balancer

An API gateway can route requests to services and may distribute traffic, but its core model is consumer and API policy. Amazon API Gateway documentation distinguishes this from traditional load balancing: a gateway can provide request validation, rate limiting, API keys, SDK generation and direct integrations, while it does not balance requests among multiple downstream nodes of one service in the conventional load-balancer sense. If instance distribution is the requirement, use a load balancer or a gateway integration that explicitly provides that function.

How do these components overlap?

The names describe a primary operating model, not rigid technology boundaries. A single managed service or self-hosted process can terminate TLS, route by path, run health checks, balance targets and enforce selected policies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A reverse proxy with an upstream pool and health checks is also acting as a load balancer.
  • A Layer 7 load balancer can inspect HTTP attributes and apply selected authentication or access rules, but that does not guarantee full API-management features.
  • An API gateway normally forwards through a reverse-proxy mechanism and may distribute requests when its integration supports multiple targets.

When comparing products, list the required capability and the exact mode that supplies it. “Layer 7” tells you the inspection level; it does not tell you whether the product includes quotas, developer analytics, transformations or a particular identity integration.

Do I need an API gateway in front of a load balancer?

Only when the two layers solve separate problems. Put a gateway in front of a load balancer when you need API-specific consumer policy and the load balancer is responsible for distributing traffic to healthy instances. Do not add a gateway merely because the service has more than one backend.

Use only a load balancer when

  • The principal requirement is high-volume distribution and failover across instances.
  • Clients use TCP, UDP or another non-HTTP protocol.
  • HTTP routing is simple and you do not need per-consumer keys, quotas or transformations.

Use a gateway with a load balancer when

  • A public API needs authentication, authorization, validation, quotas or rate limits by consumer.
  • A global or regional edge must select the nearest or healthiest site while a gateway applies a consistent API contract.
  • Different client versions require controlled transformations or protocol integration.
  • Operations teams need API-level usage and error data in addition to infrastructure metrics.

Typical composed request path

  1. The client resolves a public API hostname and connects to a global or regional edge load balancer.
  2. The load balancer applies edge TLS, network controls and site or pool selection.
  3. The request reaches the API gateway, which authenticates the caller, checks quotas and validates the API contract.
  4. The gateway routes to an internal service address or service-level load balancer.
  5. The service-level balancer selects a healthy instance and returns the response through the same policy layers.

This arrangement adds hops, configuration and failure domains. Use it when the controls are genuinely distinct, and define ownership for certificates, timeouts, retries, logs and client-IP forwarding at each hop.

Should I choose a Layer 4 or Layer 7 load balancer?

Choose Layer 4 when transport-level handling and source-packet behavior matter more than application inspection. Choose Layer 7 when routing or policy depends on HTTP requests.

Questions to answer before selecting the layer

  • Protocol: Is traffic HTTP(S), TCP, UDP or something else?
  • Routing signal: Must you route by hostname, URL path, method, header or cookie?
  • Connection ownership: Should the balancer terminate client TLS, or must the backend do so?
  • Source information: Must the backend receive the original packet source, or can a trusted forwarded header meet the requirement?
  • Scope: Are backends global, regional, internal, cluster-local or service-local?
  • Performance model: Is the priority transport throughput and low processing overhead, or rich request-level control?

Layer 7 is not automatically “better.” It is more aware of application requests and therefore more useful for HTTP decisions, while Layer 4 or passthrough can be the correct choice for transport protocols, source preservation and simpler data paths.

Can a reverse proxy such as NGINX replace an API gateway?

It can replace a gateway for a narrow design if your required controls are limited to forwarding, TLS, routing, caching and perhaps basic access restrictions. NGINX and HAProxy are commonly used as general-purpose reverse proxies that can also load-balance and terminate SSL.

Replacement is not a category decision; it is a requirements audit. Confirm that the chosen configuration supports the identity mechanisms, per-consumer limits, request validation, transformations, analytics, audit records and lifecycle workflows your APIs need. If those controls are implemented as scattered custom rules, upgrades and policy consistency can become harder than using a purpose-built gateway.

When a reverse proxy is the simpler answer

  • There is one internal service or a small, stable set of routes.
  • Authentication is handled by the application or a separate identity-aware layer.
  • You need predictable forwarding and TLS operations rather than a developer-facing API product.
  • The team can test and operate the configuration as code.

When a gateway is justified

  • Many teams publish APIs under common consumer policies.
  • Quotas, keys, validation and transformations must be centrally enforced.
  • Usage reporting must distinguish customers or applications, not just backend targets.
  • Public API versions and integrations need managed lifecycle controls.

How should I compare candidates?

Use a capability matrix that names the protocol, deployment mode and product feature behind every “yes.” The following axes prevent category labels from hiding important differences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Axis What to verify
Traffic layer Layer 4 TCP/UDP/IP, Layer 7 HTTP(S), or both
Primary job Forwarding, backend distribution, API policy or a deliberate combination
Backend selection Health-check type, algorithm, weights, locality, failover and draining behavior
Security TLS termination, re-encryption, WAF integration, authentication, authorization and mutual TLS
API controls Validation, transformations, quotas, keys, protocol translation and consumer analytics
Connection behavior Proxy termination versus passthrough, timeout handling and source-address preservation
Placement Global edge, regional edge, internal network, cluster ingress or service-local
Operations Managed versus self-managed deployment, configuration model, logs, metrics, tracing and cost model

Feature availability is product-specific. Record the provider, edition, protocol and deployment mode in architecture decisions so a future operator knows which behavior is guaranteed and which depends on optional configuration.

What does a practical implementation sequence look like?

Design from traffic and policy requirements outward, rather than placing every available component in the path.

  1. Inventory entry points: list public APIs, private services, protocols, expected client types and trust boundaries.
  2. Choose the transport layer: select Layer 4, Layer 7 or passthrough based on protocol, routing signals and connection ownership.
  3. Define backend eligibility: write health checks that represent safe service availability and specify failover and connection-draining behavior.
  4. Place TLS termination deliberately: decide where certificates are stored, whether traffic is re-encrypted and which hop is responsible for mutual TLS.
  5. Define API policy: document authentication, authorization, validation, transformations, quotas and rate-limit identities before configuring routes.
  6. Assign each rule to one layer: avoid duplicate retries, timeouts, redirects, authentication or rate limits unless the interaction is intentional.
  7. Instrument every hop: propagate a correlation identifier and record route, status, latency, selected backend and policy result.
  8. Test failure paths: remove targets, expire credentials, exceed limits, send invalid payloads and verify that errors are safe and understandable.
  9. Load-test the complete path: measure gateway and balancer overhead, connection reuse, TLS cost and behavior during scale-out.

What common design mistakes cause outages?

  • Assuming “Layer 7” means API management: verify quotas, validation and consumer reporting separately.
  • Using a gateway as an instance balancer by assumption: confirm how multiple downstream nodes are selected and checked.
  • Stacking retries at every hop: independent retries can multiply load during an outage. Set one deliberate retry policy and make operations idempotent where possible.
  • Breaking client identity: document trusted forwarding headers or use a connection mode that preserves source information when required.
  • Terminating TLS without a trust plan: decide whether backend links are encrypted and how certificates are rotated.
  • Health-checking only the process: a live process may still be unable to serve real requests; choose checks that reflect dependency and readiness state.
  • Creating policy drift: keep gateway, balancer and proxy configuration versioned, reviewed and tested together.
  • Ignoring observability boundaries: correlate edge, gateway and backend logs so a client error can be traced to the layer that generated it.

Which component should I choose?

Choose a reverse proxy for controlled forwarding, TLS termination, host or path routing, caching and backend concealment. Choose a load balancer when distributing traffic among healthy targets is the central requirement, selecting Layer 4, Layer 7 or passthrough according to protocol and connection behavior. Choose an API gateway when the public API needs centrally enforced consumer policy, validation, quotas, transformations or API-level analytics. Combine them only where each layer has a distinct responsibility you can operate and test.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should TLS be terminated when using both a gateway and a load balancer?

Terminate TLS at the earliest layer that must inspect the request, then decide whether to re-encrypt each internal hop. The choice depends on trust boundaries, mutual-TLS requirements, certificate ownership and whether a passthrough design is needed; document it per deployment rather than treating one location as universal.

How do I preserve the client IP through proxies and gateways?

A proxy-terminating load balancer normally becomes the immediate network peer of the backend. Use the product’s documented trusted forwarding mechanism, validate which intermediaries may set it, and prevent clients from spoofing the value; passthrough modes preserve packet information differently.

Should health checks call a real API endpoint?

Use an endpoint that reflects readiness to receive production traffic without causing a business-side effect. Separate liveness from readiness when dependencies can fail independently, and make the check’s timeout and failure thresholds match the time needed to remove or restore a target.

How can I prevent rate limits from being applied twice?

Assign ownership by identity and scope: for example, let the gateway enforce consumer quotas while an edge layer enforces coarse connection protection. Record the limit decision and response headers so operators can tell which layer rejected a request.
