API mocking for AI applications replaces live language-model, embedding, vector, and third-party calls with predictable local services. The APIMock-AI pattern set combines request matching, multiple response strategies, provider-shaped payloads, contract validation, observability, and deliberate fault injection. It lets a team test application logic, streaming, retries, circuit breakers, and fallbacks without spending money on live calls or waiting for an external service to fail.

APIMock-AI is an implementation pattern and guide, not a separately documented commercial product. The approach described by Phil IPS in a DEV Community tutorial posted October 12 and edited October 14, 2026, uses a Python aiohttp server with catch-all routing. The sections below turn that pattern into a practical design for local development and CI.

What does API mocking for AI applications solve?

AI software rarely depends on one HTTP endpoint. A production request may pass through a chat-completion provider, an embedding service, a vector database, a moderation or billing API, and internal gateways. Calling all of those systems during every unit and integration test creates nondeterministic output, network delays, rate-limit exposure, privacy concerns, and test bills. A mock gives the application a controlled response while retaining the same method, path, headers, query values, request body, and failure semantics that the real dependency exposes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The useful goal is not to make every response unrealistically perfect. It is to model the states your application must handle: a normal completion, an empty result, malformed JSON, a slow response, a stream that ends early, a provider-specific error, or an HTTP 429 with a Retry-After value. APIMock-AI treats those states as configurable rules rather than one hard-coded fake endpoint.

How is an APIMock-AI server structured?

The reference architecture is a small asynchronous HTTP server with one catch-all route. Each rule describes what request it matches and what it should return. Rules are sorted by descending priority, so a narrow exception can take precedence over a broad default.

Rule field Purpose Typical value
HTTP method Restricts matching to the request verb. POST
Path pattern Matches an exact path or glob-style pattern. /v1/chat/completions or /v1/*
Strategy Selects how the response is produced. static, sequence, callback, or chaos
Response or callback Supplies a fixed payload or code that builds one from the request. JSON object or Python function
Conditions Further filters on headers, query values, or request data. Model name, authorization header, or query flag
Priority Controls which matching rule wins. Higher number first
Match count Limits or tracks how often a rule is used. One-time failure or repeated response

Every request is logged. If no rule matches, the server returns HTTP 404 rather than silently inventing a response. A verification helper counts calls by method and path, allowing a test to assert that a retry happened twice, that a fallback avoided the provider, or that an endpoint was never called.

Illustrative Python server skeleton

The following compact example shows the mechanics. It is an implementation sketch, so adapt error handling, authentication, and lifecycle management to your test framework.

async def handler(request):

        if not matches(rule, request):
            continue
        rule['used'] += 1
        if rule['strategy'] == 'callback':
            return await rule['callback'](request)
        return web.json_response(rule['response'])
    return web.Response(status=404, text='No mock rule matched')

app = web.Application()
app.router.add_route('*', '/{tail:.*}', handler)

In a real implementation, add explicit strategy dispatch, request-body parsing, response headers, streaming support, and safe cleanup between tests. Reset rule usage and call logs for each test or test class so one scenario cannot affect another.

Which response strategies should an AI mock support?

A single static response is adequate for a smoke test, but AI integrations need several response modes. The six strategies below cover most application and resilience scenarios.

Strategy What it does Best use Main caution
Static Returns the same status, headers, and body every time. Schema checks, UI snapshots, and deterministic unit tests. Can hide state-dependent bugs.
Sequence Returns successive responses from an ordered list. Retry tests, pagination, token refresh, and multi-turn workflows. Reset the sequence between tests.
Template Builds a response by substituting request values into a template. Echoing IDs, language, model, or query filters. Keep substitutions constrained so tests remain predictable.
Callback Runs code that examines the request and creates a response. Provider-specific validation, dynamic tool calls, or conditional errors. Callbacks should stay fast and side-effect free.
Proxy Forwards selected traffic to a real service. Hybrid tests where only an unsupported operation uses the provider. It reintroduces network, privacy, cost, and nondeterminism; isolate it from normal CI.
Chaos Deliberately adds delay, errors, timeouts, or corrupted data. Resilience and recovery tests. Use explicit seeds or fixed schedules when reproducibility matters.

Combine strategies with conditions and priority. For example, a high-priority rule can return a 429 when the request contains a test header, while a lower-priority rule returns a normal completion for all other requests.

How do you mock chat completions, embeddings, and streaming?

AI mocks must imitate the payload shape as well as the status code. An application that parses provider-specific fields can pass against a generic JSON object and still fail in production.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Chat-completion sequences

Define an ordered sequence for an endpoint such as POST /v1/chat/completions. The first item can return a normal assistant message, the second can return a tool call, and a later item can return an error or an empty choice. Assert that the client sends the expected model, message roles, temperature settings, and optional tool definitions. Sequence responses are especially useful for testing retry logic because the first response can fail and the next can succeed without changing application code.

chat_sequence = [
    {'id': 'mock-1', 'choices': [{'message': {'role': 'assistant', 'content': 'Draft answer'}, 'finish_reason': 'stop'}]},
    {'id': 'mock-2', 'choices': [{'message': {'role': 'assistant', 'content': 'Final answer'}, 'finish_reason': 'stop'}]}
]
add_rule('POST', '/v1/chat/completions', 'sequence', response=chat_sequence,
         priority=20)

The exact envelope should match the provider contract your client consumes. Include usage fields, tool-call fields, finish reasons, and request identifiers when your application reads them; omit fields only when the real provider omits them for that case.

Deterministic pseudo-embeddings

For POST /v1/embeddings, return vectors generated deterministically from the input text or a stable hash. Their purpose is repeatability: the same fixture always produces the same dimensions and values, making indexing and retrieval code testable without an embedding bill. These vectors are not evidence that semantic similarity is correct, so use real model evaluations separately when measuring retrieval quality.

Validate the requested model, input type, vector length, and response index. Include an error rule for an unsupported dimension or an empty input if the production service rejects those cases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Anthropic-style callbacks

An Anthropic-shaped POST /v1/messages callback can inspect the requested model, maximum token count, system prompt, and content blocks before constructing a response. A callback is preferable to a fixed object when the test needs to echo a request identifier, reject an invalid message role, or vary the answer according to a tool definition.

Server-sent-event streaming

Streaming tests should send the same event framing that the client expects: content deltas, metadata, a completion marker, and the correct Content-Type. Emit chunks with controlled pauses to test incremental rendering, cancellation, back-pressure, and a stream that terminates before its final marker. Keep a non-streaming rule for the same path when a request flag selects ordinary JSON.

Rate limits and provider payloads

Rate-limit middleware should return HTTP 429 and a Retry-After header. Test both a numeric delay and the client behavior when the header is absent or malformed. The broader integration checklist includes OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Qdrant, Pinecone, Weaviate, Milvus, custom HTTP APIs, GraphQL, and gRPC; implement only the protocols your application actually calls, but preserve each provider’s request and response conventions.

How do contract tests validate an AI integration?

Contract testing checks that the client and mock agree on an endpoint’s method, parameters, request body, response body, and failure shape. The APIMock-AI approach models a provider, version, base URL, endpoint parameters, request bodies, and response schemas, then converts that model into an OpenAPI 3.0 document.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build the contract

  1. Record the provider name and API version used by the client.
  2. Set the mock base URL and define every endpoint the test suite calls.
  3. Describe path and query parameters, required headers, authentication placeholders, and request JSON.
  4. Define successful and error response schemas, including streaming or rate-limit headers where relevant.
  5. Generate an OpenAPI 3.0 document from the model and keep it under version control with the client fixtures.

Run and report validation

The contract tester validates request JSON with jsonschema, sends the request to the mock, validates the response, and returns a structured result containing the endpoint, pass/fail state, errors, request, and response. Structured output lets CI publish a useful failure rather than only a stack trace: a missing required field, an unexpected status, a wrong vector length, or a response that violates the declared schema.

{
  'endpoint': 'POST /v1/chat/completions',
  'passed': False,
  'errors': ['response.choices[0].message.content is required'],
  'request': {'model': 'test-model', 'messages': []},
  'response': {'id': 'mock-1', 'choices': [{}]}
}

Keep separate contracts for provider versions when payloads differ. A passing schema test proves shape compatibility, not model quality, latency, or provider availability.

How should chaos testing exercise resilience?

Resilience tests deliberately make a dependency unreliable, then verify that the application fails safely. The pattern set names fixed latency, probabilistic errors, timeouts, and invalid JSON as core injections.

Injected condition What to verify in the client
Fixed or variable latency Request deadlines, user-visible progress, and cancellation.
Probabilistic HTTP errors Retry limits, backoff, jitter, and preservation of the original error.
Connection timeout Timeout classification, resource cleanup, and fallback selection.
Invalid or truncated JSON Parser failure handling and prevention of unsafe partial state.
HTTP 429 with Retry-After Respect for server guidance and avoidance of a retry storm.
Early-ended stream Partial-output handling, cancellation, and transcript consistency.

Retry with exponential backoff and jitter

Configure a deterministic failure count, then assert that the client stops after its maximum attempts. Exponential backoff increases the delay between attempts; jitter randomizes that delay so many workers do not retry simultaneously. In unit tests, inject a clock or bounded delay so the policy is tested without making the suite slow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Circuit breakers

Drive the mock through the breaker’s closed, open, and half-open states. Confirm that repeated failures open the circuit, subsequent calls fail fast without reaching the provider, and a successful probe closes it again. Use the call-verification helper to prove that open-circuit requests were not sent.

Fallbacks, bulkheads, and timeouts

Return a provider error or timeout and verify the documented fallback: cached content, a smaller model, a queued job, or a clear user error. Bulkhead tests isolate worker pools or concurrency limits so one saturated dependency cannot consume every application thread. Timeout tests should cover connect, read, and total-operation limits if the client distinguishes them.

These are test dimensions and sample patterns, not benchmark results. The guide supplies no independent latency, reliability, savings, adoption, or performance figures.

What is a practical APIMock-AI workflow from local development to CI?

  1. Inventory dependencies. List every LLM, embedding, vector, HTTP, GraphQL, and gRPC call, including streaming and asynchronous paths.
  2. Capture real contracts. Record methods, paths, headers, query values, request bodies, response envelopes, status codes, and provider version.
  3. Start with deterministic rules. Add static responses for the happy path and schema checks before introducing failures.
  4. Add stateful scenarios. Use sequences and match counts for retries, pagination, refresh flows, and multi-step agents.
  5. Add callbacks where shape depends on input. Validate model names, message roles, tools, and vector dimensions.
  6. Implement streaming separately. Test event order, chunk boundaries, cancellation, and terminal events.
  7. Generate and run OpenAPI contracts. Fail CI on request or response schema violations and retain the structured result as an artifact.
  8. Inject resilience faults. Exercise latency, 429 responses, server errors, timeouts, malformed data, and truncated streams.
  9. Verify calls. Assert method, path, count, and whether fallback or circuit-breaker behavior prevented a call.
  10. Reset state. Clear logs, sequence indexes, match counts, and generated data between tests.
  11. Separate live smoke tests. Keep any proxy or real-provider check in an explicitly labeled job with its own credentials, budget, and privacy controls.

How does APIMock-AI compare with adjacent tools?

APIMock-AI is a pattern set, so the comparison is about emphasis rather than a controlled product benchmark. A LibHunt summary identifies MockServer and WireMock as related mock-server projects, Testcontainers-node as a disposable integration-environment option, and Pact JVM as a consumer-driven contract-testing option.

What pitfalls make AI mocks misleading?

  • Generic payloads: A response with {'text': 'ok'} does not test a client that expects provider-specific choices, content blocks, usage, or stream events. Mirror the fields the client reads.
  • Only happy paths: Without 429s, timeouts, malformed data, and partial streams, retry and fallback code remains untested.
  • Overlapping rules: A broad glob can capture a request intended for a narrow rule. Use priorities and assert the selected rule in logs.
  • Leaking state: Sequence indexes and match counts can make tests pass or fail depending on order. Reset them for every scenario.
  • Unbounded randomness: Probabilistic chaos without a seed produces irreproducible failures. Record the seed or use a fixed failure schedule in CI.
  • Confusing deterministic vectors with quality: Pseudo-embeddings test dimensions and data flow, not semantic retrieval accuracy.
  • Proxying by default: A fallback proxy can silently turn a unit test into a paid, network-dependent test. Require an explicit environment flag.
  • Ignoring headers: Retry behavior often depends on Retry-After, content type, request IDs, and stream framing. Include them in contracts.
  • Calling a mock a benchmark: A passing mock suite says that your code handles modeled conditions; it does not establish provider speed, uptime, or model quality.

How can teams keep mocks aligned with changing providers?

Version contracts with the client and update them when a provider changes its API version or response envelope. Add a compatibility test for every field your parser relies on, and make schema changes fail loudly rather than allowing an extra property to pass unnoticed when that property changes semantics.

Run a small, separately governed live smoke test against each provider to detect drift that a local mock cannot know about. Keep credentials, data handling, spend limits, and execution frequency separate from ordinary CI. When drift is found, update the contract and mock fixture together, then retain the old fixture if older client versions remain in production.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an API mock replace a staging environment?

No. A mock verifies how your code behaves under modeled responses, while staging reveals deployment configuration, network policy, authentication, quotas, and interactions among real services. Use mocks for fast repeatable coverage and a smaller staging or live-smoke layer for environment compatibility.

How do I test token streaming without making tests flaky?

Emit a fixed sequence of server-sent events with deterministic chunk boundaries and an explicit terminal event. Add separate fixtures for a delayed chunk, a cancelled stream, and a stream that ends before completion so the client’s partial-output behavior is repeatable.

Are deterministic fake embeddings suitable for evaluating search relevance?

They are suitable for testing serialization, indexing, dimension checks, filtering, and ranking code with stable fixtures. They cannot establish that a real embedding model captures meaning, so relevance evaluation needs representative text and the production embedding model.

How do I prevent a provider API change from bypassing my mocks?

Keep provider version and schema in the contract, validate both requests and responses, and fail on incompatible changes in CI. A separately controlled live smoke test can detect changes that never appeared in your stored fixtures.
