Android’s Inactivity Reboot can automatically restart a phone after it has remained locked for 72 hours. The reboot does not delete your files; Google says your data becomes unreadable until you unlock the phone again. The feature is documented as part of Android Advanced Protection, but Google does not say it is available on every Android phone.
What Android’s 72-hour inactivity reboot does
Google describes Inactivity Reboot as a protection that will “Automatically reboot your phone if it remains locked for 72 hours.” The trigger is the phone remaining locked for three days—not simply being unused while unlocked. Google’s Android Advanced Protection help says the reboot makes user data unreadable until a fresh unlock.
In practical terms, you should expect to enter your primary screen-lock credential after the reboot before you can access protected data. The feature does not erase or factory-reset the phone. Google’s documentation describes the effect as unreadability until unlock; it does not claim the feature defeats every possible data-extraction method.
Why a reboot changes access to data
Android’s technical documentation explains that credential-encrypted storage depends on the user’s unlock credentials. A reboot can therefore leave that data unavailable until the user authenticates. The Android Open Source Project’s Resume-on-Reboot documentation provides background on credential-encrypted storage and credential-dependent access, but it describes behavior related to over-the-air updates; it does not document the 72-hour inactivity timer.

Where Inactivity Reboot fits in Android Advanced Protection
Google lists Inactivity Reboot among the device-safety protections in Android Advanced Protection. It is a separate feature from Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, USB Protection, Failed Authentication Lock, and Watch Unlock. Those protections have distinct functions; their presence in the same list does not mean they share the same trigger or behavior.
How to check whether your phone has it
Google’s instructions point to Advanced Protection through Android’s Security & Privacy settings or through Google settings. Menu names and paths can differ by device. Open the Advanced Protection page on your phone and check which protections it lists; do not assume the reboot is available simply because the phone runs Android. Google’s documentation does not promise support on every device or provide a universal rollout schedule. Some devices may prompt you to restart when Advanced Protection is switched on or off.

The 72-hour figure is Google’s documented trigger for an automatic reboot. It is not a measure of how much the feature reduces data extraction or a guarantee of protection against every attack. Google has not published a device-coverage figure or an effectiveness study in the documentation cited here. Treat it as an additional device-safety measure, not a substitute for a strong screen lock and the other protections you choose to use.
