Android Automotive OS 16 refreshes the car’s built-in interface and lays groundwork for deeper Gemini integration, but it does not guarantee that every vehicle with Google built-in will receive the same screen or features. Its baseline changes include a taller Media card, a dedicated assistant button, redesigned volume and notification panels, and a more readable app grid. Gemini’s availability depends on Google’s rollout and each vehicle’s support.

First, Android Automotive is not Android Auto

Android Automotive OS (AAOS) runs natively on a vehicle’s hardware. Android Auto instead projects a compatible phone’s apps and interface onto a vehicle display. An Android Auto receiver or retrofit does not install AAOS 16: the vehicle itself must run AAOS to receive its platform updates.

That distinction also matters for updates and apps. AAOS is part of the vehicle’s software, with the automaker shaping the delivered experience; Android Auto relies on a connected phone. The apps and functions available in either experience depend on compatibility and rollout, rather than the version number alone.

What changes in the Android Automotive 16 baseline?

Android Authority’s June 16, 2025 report describes the open-source AAOS 16 baseline. The changes focus on screen space, voice-assistant access and legibility rather than a complete interface redesign.

Area AAOS 16 baseline change Practical effect
Home cards The Weather card is removed and the Media card becomes taller. More media information can appear in the larger card.
Voice assistant A dedicated assistant button takes the former quick-access volume location. Voice control is easier to find on the interface.
Volume controls Volume moves beside brightness. Its panel opens fully expanded as a compact overlay, labels audio streams, adds a navigation-volume slider and changes “ringer volume” to “in-call volume.” Drivers can identify and adjust audio categories more directly.
Notifications The notification panel uses an opaque background. Notifications are visually separated from content behind them.
App grid The grid changes from 5×3 to 4×3 to make app labels less likely to be cut off. Fewer app icons fit in the grid, but labels have more room.
Digital keys Settings add an Ultra-Wideband toggle associated with digital car keys. The baseline exposes a related setting; this alone does not establish that a particular vehicle supports UWB keys.

These are baseline changes, not a production specification for every car. AAOS is open source and automakers can customize it extensively, so cards, colors, controls and even which changes ship can differ by vehicle. The report does not establish a complete list of production models using this exact interface.

What does Gemini integration add?

Google describes Gemini as an upgrade from Google Assistant for cars with Google built-in. Google’s announcement says: “Gemini — your helpful AI assistant — is starting to roll out in cars with Google built-in as an upgrade from Google Assistant.” The wording describes a rollout, not an immediate feature guarantee for every car.

  • Requires Android 11+
  • Multifunctional button for easy phone pairing and switching

Google’s Android Developers announcement describes navigation intents that let Gemini initiate a navigation request, show relevant search results or perform custom actions. One example is reporting traffic congestion by voice. Google also says Gemini can handle natural-language requests, work with favorite apps and answer vehicle-specific questions.

Access to Gmail, Calendar and Google Home is planned to expand by language and country, according to Google. The company has not established a single universal rollout schedule, language list or vehicle-compatibility list in these announcements. Whether a driver can use a particular capability therefore depends on availability in their country, language, vehicle and supported apps.

Will my Google-built-in car get the same interface?

Not necessarily. “Google built-in” identifies a vehicle ecosystem, not a promise of identical AAOS screens or feature parity with the open-source AAOS 16 baseline. Automakers can tailor the interface and manage vehicle software delivery.

In 2026, Google said cars with Google built-in were available in more than 100 models from 16 brands. That is an ecosystem count, not a list of vehicles confirmed to receive AAOS 16’s baseline UI or every Gemini capability.

What AAOS 16 means for apps and developers

The interface update is only part of the platform story. Google’s Android for Cars documentation says media apps built with the Car App Library became available on Android Automotive OS with version 1.9. The library includes richer components such as expanded headers, spotlight sections in scrollable areas and variations for grid items. These are development capabilities, not a promise that every app or vehicle will use them.

Google’s 2025 I/O recap separately said video apps would be supported on Android Auto starting with Android 16 phones in select compatible cars, alongside updated car-app quality guidance and testing and distribution tools. That announcement concerns Android Auto and compatible phones; it should not be confused with AAOS 16 or taken to mean that every Android Automotive vehicle supports video apps.

How to tell which experience and features you have

  • Check whether the system is built into the car. If the vehicle runs its own infotainment operating system, it may use AAOS; Android Auto is phone projection. The names can appear together in a car that supports both.
  • Check the vehicle’s software details. Look in its system settings or release notes for the operating-system version and update information. A model year or Google built-in branding alone does not confirm AAOS 16.
  • Confirm Gemini support for your vehicle and region. Google describes a staged rollout, while language, country and vehicle support can vary. A dedicated assistant control in the baseline is not proof that Gemini is already enabled.
  • Do not infer AAOS from an aftermarket receiver. A receiver that supports Android Auto provides phone projection; it does not by itself add Android Automotive OS 16 to the car.
