Android Auto can stop connecting when a VPN is active because the VPN changes how Android routes that app’s traffic. The failure is configuration-dependent, not proof that every VPN breaks Android Auto. The fastest diagnosis is to pause the VPN and try Android Auto again. If it immediately works, reopen the VPN and use its per-app split-tunneling control to exclude Android Auto, then check Android’s “Block connections without VPN” and always-on VPN settings.

Why does Android Auto stop working when my VPN is on?
A VPN inserts a virtual network path between Android and the internet or other network services. Depending on the VPN app, Android version, and car connection, Android Auto may be unable to reach a service through that path or may lose access when traffic is restricted to the VPN interface. Google’s Android guidance warns that some apps can behave differently or fail while a VPN is connected.
Android Auto is not guaranteed to fail with a VPN. Many phones and cars continue working, while others fail only with wireless Android Auto, only with a particular VPN protocol, or only when strict “always-on” policies are enabled. Treat the VPN as a testable cause rather than assuming it is the only possible cause.

What the VPN changes
- Routing: The VPN can send an app’s traffic through its tunnel instead of the normal Android network.
- Filtering: A VPN may block local or non-tunneled connections as a privacy safeguard.
- Per-app policy: Split tunneling can put selected apps inside or outside the tunnel, but the available mode depends on the provider.
- System enforcement: Android’s always-on VPN and “Block connections without VPN” controls can prevent excluded apps from using ordinary networking.
These layers explain why simply selecting Android Auto in a VPN menu does not always solve the problem: Android may still be enforcing a no-traffic-outside-the-VPN rule.
How can I test whether the VPN is causing the Android Auto failure?
Temporarily disconnecting the VPN is the cleanest diagnostic. It does not identify every possible fault, but a repeatable change in Android Auto behavior gives you a strong lead.
- Park safely and disconnect the VPN from its app or Android’s VPN quick setting. Do not change several other settings at the same time.
- Unplug and reconnect the USB cable if you use wired Android Auto. For wireless Android Auto, turn the car’s connection off and on or restart the head unit according to the vehicle manual.
- Start Android Auto and check whether the car interface appears and remains connected for several minutes.
- Reconnect the VPN and repeat the same connection attempt. If Android Auto fails only when the VPN is active, continue with per-app routing rather than repeatedly resetting the car.
This is a temporary diagnostic, not a recommendation to leave your phone unprotected. Google’s general VPN instructions specifically suggest pausing the VPN or excluding an affected app when an app does not function correctly.

How do I use Android Auto while keeping my VPN connected?
Use the VPN app’s per-app split tunneling feature. Configure Android Auto to bypass the VPN if the goal is to keep the VPN active for other apps, then reconnect the VPN so the new policy is applied.
Find the provider’s per-app setting
Open the VPN app and look for a setting named Split tunneling, App bypass, Per-app VPN, Exclude apps, or similar. Names and availability vary by provider, subscription, Android release, and device manufacturer. Some apps offer only an allowlist, while others offer only a bypass or denylist.

- Open ExpressVPN and select Profile.
- Open Split Tunneling.
- Choose Do not allow selected apps to use the VPN.
- Select Android Auto in the app list.
- Disconnect and reconnect the VPN.
- Retry Android Auto with the same cable or wireless procedure used during the diagnostic test.
The wording in another VPN app may differ, but the logic is the same: Android Auto uses the regular network while the rest of the phone remains subject to the VPN.

Choose the correct list type
Android’s documented model supports either an allowed-app list or a disallowed-app list, not both simultaneously.
- Allowlist mode: Only apps you select use the VPN. To keep Android Auto inside the tunnel, add it to the allowed list; to bypass it, you may need a provider mode that permits selected apps outside the tunnel.
- Denylist or bypass mode: Apps you select avoid the VPN. Choose Android Auto here when the VPN is the suspected cause.
Read the mode description carefully. Selecting Android Auto in an “apps that use the VPN” list has the opposite result from selecting it in an “apps that bypass the VPN” list.
What does “Block connections without VPN” do?
“Block connections without VPN” prevents traffic that does not use the VPN. When it is enabled, an app excluded from VPN routing can be blocked instead of falling back to Android’s normal network.
Check both Android’s VPN settings and the VPN app’s own controls. Menu labels vary, but the relevant area is usually under Settings → Network & internet → VPN, followed by the gear icon for the configured VPN. On some devices, always-on and blocking controls are exposed only after selecting the VPN profile.

Suppose Android Auto is correctly excluded in the VPN app. If Android is also configured to block all non-VPN connections, the exclusion creates exactly the traffic Android is forbidden to send. Disable the blocking rule temporarily for testing, or use a provider configuration that keeps Android Auto in the tunnel if that is supported and compatible with your car.

Changing this control reduces the strictness of your VPN policy. If your security requirement is that no traffic ever leaves outside the tunnel, do not disable the block merely to make Android Auto work; pausing Android Auto or using a different supported routing mode may be preferable.
Should I pause the VPN or exclude Android Auto?
Pausing is quicker and useful for diagnosis. Excluding Android Auto preserves VPN routing for other apps, but it requires provider support and may conflict with Android’s traffic-blocking policy.

There is no evidence that one choice is universally better. Decide based on whether privacy policy or reliable Android Auto has priority during a particular drive.

They can, but the available evidence does not establish that USB always works or that wireless always fails. Wireless Android Auto adds a wireless link and pairing state, so a VPN conflict may appear there first; a cable introduces its own connection and compatibility variables.
Test the same setup with the VPN disconnected, then repeat after applying the app exclusion. If wired Android Auto works and wireless does not, troubleshoot wireless pairing and the VPN separately rather than concluding that a new adapter will solve the problem. If both fail only with the VPN active, focus on routing and blocking controls.
What should I check if Android Auto still fails after the exclusion?
Work through these checks in order so each result tells you something about the remaining cause.

- Confirm the selected app. Android Auto may appear as a system or companion component on some phones. Select the Android Auto entry actually shown in the VPN app, not an unrelated music, car, or Google service.
- Reapply the policy. Disconnect and reconnect the VPN after changing split tunneling. Some apps do not reload per-app rules while a tunnel is already active.
- Review always-on VPN. Android can keep a VPN service running even after the app interface appears disconnected. Open the VPN profile in Android settings and check whether always-on is enabled.
- Review the non-VPN block. Turn off “Block connections without VPN” temporarily for a controlled test, then retry. Restore your preferred security policy after testing.
- Test with the VPN fully stopped. A notification that says disconnected may leave an always-on service or kill switch active. Use the provider’s stop or disable control, then repeat the Android Auto test.
- Update Android Auto and the VPN app. Install updates from the official app store, restart the phone, and test again. App updates can change available VPN bypass controls.
- Try the provider’s documented protocol options. If the app offers multiple protocols, test them one at a time while keeping all other settings unchanged. Not every provider exposes this choice, and no single protocol is guaranteed to fix Android Auto.
- Check the physical connection. For wired Android Auto, use a known-good data cable and inspect the phone and car USB ports. For wireless Android Auto, remove the car from the phone’s Bluetooth and Android Auto settings only if ordinary reconnection steps fail, then pair again according to the vehicle instructions.
- Check the car and phone software. A VPN result can be coincidental if the head unit, phone operating system, or Android Auto component has a separate compatibility problem.
- Contact the VPN provider. Give the support team your Android version, phone model, VPN app version, connection type, and whether Android Auto works when the VPN is fully stopped. Ask specifically about per-app bypass and always-on compatibility.
Change one setting at a time and record the result. That prevents a successful fix from being lost among multiple simultaneous resets.

Not as a general rule. A device-specific wireless Android Auto adapter manual recommends turning VPN apps off while using wireless Android Auto, but that is a product instruction rather than evidence that buying an adapter repairs VPN routing.
An adapter can change how the phone and car establish a wireless connection, so it might alter symptoms in a particular setup. It does not remove Android’s VPN policy, split-tunneling limitations, always-on behavior, or “Block connections without VPN.” Treat hardware as a conditional compatibility choice, not the first troubleshooting step.

A Google One VPN incident reported on November 13, 2023 affected Android Auto bypass behavior and was reported as fixed by an app update at that time. That historical event does not establish a current general bug or explain every present-day failure.
If you use a Google VPN product and Android Auto recently stopped working after an app change, update the app and check its current support notices. Do not rely on a 2023 workaround as a permanent explanation for a different device or VPN.

When Android Auto bypasses the VPN, traffic associated with that app follows Android’s ordinary network path. The VPN can still protect apps that remain in the tunnel, but the excluded app does not receive the VPN’s tunnel routing, server location, or filtering.

That trade-off is often acceptable for a car connection, but it should match your threat model and workplace or organizational policy. If your policy forbids any non-VPN traffic, keep the strict block enabled and ask the provider for a supported configuration instead of silently bypassing it.
How do I restore the original VPN policy after driving?
Return to the VPN app’s split-tunneling screen and remove Android Auto from the bypass list, or switch back to the provider’s original mode. Re-enable always-on and “Block connections without VPN” if you had disabled them for testing, then reconnect the VPN and verify that other apps follow your intended policy.
If Android Auto continues working after the VPN is restored, leave the tested configuration in place and note the exact app and Android versions. If it fails again, that repeatable result confirms the VPN path remains incompatible with that setup and should be reported to the provider.

Does Android Auto need an internet connection to start?
Android Auto’s phone-to-car connection and the phone’s access to online services are separate parts of the experience. The interface may connect locally while navigation, streaming, traffic, or voice services remain unavailable if the phone has no usable network path.
Can I exclude only Android Auto instead of every Google app?
Usually, yes, when the VPN provider offers per-app rules and Android exposes Android Auto as a selectable app. Avoid broad exclusions unless support instructs you to use them, because they bypass the VPN for unrelated services as well.
Why is the split-tunneling option missing from my VPN app?
Some providers, plans, protocols, or managed-device policies do not support per-app routing on Android. Update the app, check its current documentation, and ask support whether your subscription and device model provide an Android bypass feature.
Will excluding Android Auto reveal my phone’s location?
Exclusion changes network routing; it does not by itself turn off Android location services or grant the car access to all phone data. Location visibility still depends on Android permissions, the app’s settings, and the network services being used.
