You can reliably customize Android Auto’s app launcher from your Android phone: open Settings → Connected devices → Connection preferences → Android Auto → Customize launcher, hide unwanted entries, drag apps into a new order, then exit and restart Android Auto. That changes app visibility and order, not every element of the dashboard.
The 2026 redesign adds edge-to-edge Google Maps, Material 3 Expressive styling, wallpapers, responsive navigation-bar placement and widgets such as favorite contacts, weather and a garage-door shortcut. Those visual changes and widget controls are rolling out by vehicle, screen and software version, so your car may not yet show every option described by Google.
What can you customize in Android Auto right now?
The dependable, documented controls are the launcher’s app list and order. Android Auto stores those choices in the phone-side Android Auto settings; after you restart the projected session, the car’s launcher reflects them. You cannot use that screen to freely move Google Maps, the navigation bar or every dashboard panel.
Google’s Android Auto help describes a launcher containing compatible apps, an Exit option and Assistant actions. It is a vertically scrolling grid. On a wide display it can open beside the navigation bar; on a portrait display it can open above the bar at the bottom. The exact arrangement depends on the car’s screen and current interface.

Launcher controls and their limits
| Control | Where you change it | What it changes | What it does not change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hide an app or option | Phone: Android Auto → Customize launcher | Removes that entry from the launcher view | Does not uninstall the phone app or remove a feature from the car |
| Reorder entries | Phone: Android Auto → Customize launcher | Changes the launcher’s app order | Does not move the navigation bar or dashboard widgets |
| Show quick controls for apps | Phone-side Android Auto settings | Can keep media controls and navigation directions available over a full-screen app | Does not guarantee the same bar position on every vehicle |
| Navigation-bar position | Usually not a manual preference | Android Auto places it for the display and vehicle | It is not freely draggable by the driver |
How do I rearrange or hide apps in Android Auto?
Use the phone settings below while parked. If Android Auto is connected and the settings page is unavailable or incomplete, disconnect the phone first; some Android versions expose the controls more clearly when no projection session is active.
- Open Android Auto settings. On the phone, open Settings. Go to Connected devices → Connection preferences → Android Auto. Menu names vary by manufacturer and Android release, so searching Settings for Android Auto is a valid alternative.
- Open Customize launcher. Tap Customize launcher to see the entries Android Auto can place in its app grid.
- Hide entries you do not need. Turn off or otherwise hide apps and options that should not appear while driving. This affects the launcher list, not the app’s installation or phone notifications.
- Drag to reorder. Press and hold an app name or handle, then drag it higher or lower. Put navigation, audio or other frequently used compatible apps near the top.
- Reconnect and restart Android Auto. Exit Android Auto, disconnect or stop the projection session, and start it again. Google notes that changes on this page are reflected in the launcher after the user exits and restarts Android Auto.
If the old order remains, completely end the projection session rather than merely switching to another app on the car screen. Recheck the phone’s launcher list, reconnect, and allow a few seconds for the car display to reload.
Can I change the entire Android Auto dashboard layout?
Only partly. You control which apps appear and their launcher order; Android Auto controls much of the dashboard composition responsively according to screen geometry, vehicle controls and drive-side configuration.
Google’s design documentation says the navigation bar may appear along the bottom or on a side. A tall portrait display can place the launcher above a bottom bar, while a wide display can open the launcher beside the bar. In a right-hand-drive vehicle, the bar can be flipped so controls fit the vehicle’s orientation. A side bar is therefore normally an adaptive layout decision, not evidence that a setting has been changed accidentally.

The navigation bar remains visible while Android Auto is running. Its areas can include the apps-launcher button, Assistant, a dock of recently used apps, a notification indicator, and status information such as time, signal and battery. Android Auto may change spacing and orientation to preserve reachability and visibility on unusual screens, including ultrawide rectangles, circles and other shapes.
What does the 2026 Android Auto redesign add?
The redesign is more than a new icon grid. Google announced several coordinated changes for Android Auto and related in-car experiences during 2026, with availability arriving over time rather than on one universal date.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Expanded Maps canvas: Google describes edge-to-edge Google Maps that uses more of the available dash display.
- Material 3 Expressive styling: Expressive fonts, smoother animation and visual elements that echo the phone experience are part of the refresh.
- Personal wallpapers: The announced design includes wallpaper choices so the projected interface can feel less generic.
- Responsive treatment for unusual displays: The interface is intended to adapt from ultrawide screens to circles and other nonstandard shapes rather than assuming a single rectangular head unit.
- Widgets: Google has announced glanceable widgets and examples such as favorite-contact shortcuts, a one-tap garage-door opener and weather. The developer announcement also discusses clock, Google Home and Photos-style examples in the redesigned experience.
Google said more than 250 million Android Auto-compatible cars were on the road when it described the 2026 experience. That figure is about Android Auto compatibility, not the number of cars receiving the redesign simultaneously. Google separately described cars with Google built-in as available in more than 100 models from 16 brands; Google built-in is a different platform from phone-projected Android Auto.
How do I add widgets to the redesigned Android Auto dashboard?
There is no single, Google-documented widget-management path that every car and Android Auto rollout shares. Google announced widget support for 2026, but the exact control screen depends on the vehicle display, compatible software and staged availability.
Use this safe workflow:
- Update through supported channels. Install available Android system, Android Auto and vehicle-infotainment updates using the phone’s normal update screen and the vehicle maker’s supported process.
- Reconnect after updating. Start a fresh Android Auto session rather than judging availability from an old connection.
- Inspect the car display for an actual widget control. If your rollout exposes a dashboard-edit, add-widget or personalization control, use the labels shown on that screen. Do not assume a menu called “Customize Dashboard” exists on every vehicle.
- Choose glanceable information. Favor a contact shortcut, weather summary or other item that can be understood quickly without typing or scrolling.
If no widget control appears, that does not mean the phone is misconfigured. The documented launcher customization remains available, while the redesigned widget experience may still be unavailable for your vehicle, display shape or software stage. Google’s announcement said updates would arrive throughout 2026, and contemporaneous reporting noted that a firm universal rollout schedule was not supplied.

Why is my Android Auto bar on the side instead of the bottom?
Android Auto chooses the bar’s position and orientation from the display’s dimensions, vehicle controls and whether the vehicle is left- or right-hand drive. A side bar is expected on some wide or unusual displays and is not normally a preference you can drag to the bottom.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Check that the car is using the intended Android Auto projection and that the display has not switched to a separate built-in system. If the bar changed after an infotainment update, reconnect once and verify the vehicle’s display settings, but do not expect the phone’s Customize launcher page to control its location.
How do I keep navigation and media controls visible in a full-screen app?
Enable Show quick controls for apps in Android Auto settings on the phone. Google documents this option as a way to show media controls and navigation directions while a full-screen navigation or media app is in use.
The result still depends on the car display and the current Android Auto interface. Some vehicles may show a compact bar, while others may place controls differently. Treat the setting as a way to preserve quick access, not as a promise of an identical overlay or widget arrangement across all cars.
If quick controls do not appear
- Confirm the setting was changed in the phone’s Android Auto settings, not in a separate Google built-in menu.
- End and restart the projection session after changing it.
- Check whether the full-screen app supports the relevant media or navigation information.
- Use the vehicle’s physical controls or voice commands when the display does not expose the expected shortcut.
How should I organize the launcher for safer driving?
Put only the apps you can recognize and use at a glance near the top, and hide entries that encourage searching or scrolling. Keep the launcher short enough that you are not browsing a long grid while moving.

Android Auto’s interface is intentionally streamlined with large icons and minimal text. Google also supports voice commands for calls, messages, navigation and media, while safety lockouts restrict activities such as typing messages or scrolling through large lists while the vehicle is moving.
- Customize while parked, before starting the trip.
- Place your primary navigation and audio choices first.
- Use voice commands for messages, calls and destinations whenever practical.
- Use steering-wheel or other physical controls when they are available.
- Remove glance-irrelevant shortcuts and leave widgets limited to information that can be understood immediately.
Phone-level accessibility options such as Bold text, Outline text and Remove animations can help some users. They are phone accessibility settings, not controls that redesign the dashboard, and their effect on the projected display can vary.
What should I do when the customization menu is missing?
Missing controls usually indicate a menu-path difference, an active connection state or a rollout difference rather than a need for an accessory.
Try these branches
- Android Auto is connected: disconnect from the car, then search the phone’s Settings app for “Android Auto.”
- The menu path differs: look under Connected devices and then Connection preferences; manufacturer skins may rename or relocate the same page.
- Customize launcher is absent: verify that Android Auto is installed or updated on the phone and that the phone is the device used for projection.
- Apps are not listed: only compatible apps and Android Auto actions can appear. Installing an arbitrary phone app does not make it a driving-compatible launcher entry.
- Changes do not show: exit Android Auto fully, reconnect, and check the order again. Google specifically requires an exit and restart for launcher changes to be reflected.
- Widgets are absent: treat this as rollout-dependent. Update the phone and vehicle software, reconnect, and use any widget control that actually appears on the car display.
Android Auto or Google built-in: which settings should I use?
Use Android Auto settings on the phone when the phone is projecting apps to a compatible car display. Android Auto depends on the phone-side launcher configuration described above.

| Question | Phone-projected Android Auto | Cars with Google built-in |
|---|---|---|
| Where is the main app configuration? | On the Android phone’s Android Auto settings, plus vehicle display behavior | In the vehicle’s native infotainment system |
| What supplies the apps? | Compatible phone apps projected to the car | Apps and services running in the car |
| Does Customize launcher apply? | Yes, for launcher visibility and order | Not as a universal rule; use the car’s own controls |
What is the practical limit of Android Auto customization?
Think of customization in three layers. The first layer is dependable today: hide and reorder compatible launcher entries from the phone. The second is adaptive rather than manually controlled: bar position, launcher placement and spacing respond to the vehicle’s display, controls and drive side. The third is the 2026 redesign’s rollout layer: wallpapers, expanded Maps treatment and widgets may appear only when Google, the phone and the vehicle support that stage.
This model explains why two Android Auto users can follow the same phone steps and see different dashboards. The launcher list is user-controlled; the surrounding layout is responsive; the newest widgets and styling are conditional.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a special adapter or head unit to customize Android Auto?
No. Reordering and hiding launcher entries use the Android phone’s Android Auto settings and require no physical accessory. Hardware is relevant only if the vehicle does not support Android Auto at all, which is a compatibility issue rather than a customization requirement.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will hiding an Android Auto app uninstall it from my phone?
No. Customize launcher changes what appears in the projected launcher. The app remains installed on the phone and can be restored to the launcher later if Android Auto lists it as compatible.
Why do two cars show different Android Auto widgets?
The redesigned widgets are being introduced by rollout stage and depend on the phone, vehicle software and display. Google has announced examples, but it has not documented one identical widget editor for every car.
Can I force the navigation bar to the bottom?
Usually not. Android Auto places the bar along the bottom or side based on screen dimensions, vehicle controls and left- or right-hand drive, so the position is generally responsive rather than a user-selected layout preference.
Are Android Auto settings the same as settings in a Google built-in car?
No. Android Auto projects compatible phone experiences, so its launcher controls are on the phone. Google built-in cars run supported apps in the vehicle and use the car’s native infotainment settings.
