Not natively. Anbernic handhelds are not Nintendo-licensed consoles, do not run Nintendo’s Switch or 3DS operating systems, and cannot play official Nintendo game cards. Some Android Anbernic models can run 3DS emulation software, but support is now a serious caveat; Switch emulation is unofficial, incomplete, and legally contested. Linux “XX” models are not suitable for either system.

What does “play Switch or 3DS games” mean on an Anbernic?

There are two different questions behind the title: whether a device can run Nintendo games as Nintendo intended, and whether it can run an emulator that attempts to reproduce a Nintendo console. Anbernic devices do not offer native, licensed Switch or 3DS play. Emulation is a separate, model-dependent possibility—and not a guarantee that a particular game will work.

Anbernic is a Shenzhen maker of handheld emulation consoles sold under the RG name. Its devices generally run Android or Linux. A shell that resembles a Switch Lite or a 3DS is still an Anbernic device: appearance does not provide Nintendo firmware, Nintendo eShop access, or compatibility with Nintendo’s game-card protocol.

That means you cannot insert a Switch or 3DS cartridge into an Anbernic and play it. Nor is there an official Nintendo game catalogue for these handhelds. If you want Nintendo software to run as Nintendo supports it, use Nintendo hardware.

Which Anbernic models are realistic options?

The operating system and hardware class matter more than the shape of the device. Linux XX handhelds target older systems; Android models are the ones capable of running more demanding emulators.

Can Anbernic play Switch games?

Not as a supported or dependable catalogue feature. Some users have tried unofficial Nintendo Switch emulator forks on selected Android Anbernics, but that is different from native Switch play, and no published independent full-library compatibility rate establishes how much of the Switch catalogue works on any Anbernic model.

Why Android models appear in Switch-emulation videos

Community videos have demonstrated Citron and modified Suyu builds—forks in the Yuzu lineage—on T820-based Android handhelds such as the RG406V, RG406H, RG476H, and RG556. In a Spanish-language video posted by Palacio Gamer on November 3, 2025, the creator reported about 39 frames per second for Super Mario Bros. Wonder in Citron and about 45 in Suyu on an RG476H. The same creator said Citron booted some games, including Silksong and Hades, that Suyu did not.

Those figures describe one creator’s session, not a lab test, a repeatable benchmark, or a compatibility rating for the model family. Emulator versions, game builds, settings, and individual titles can change the result. Independent retail coverage and catalogue comparisons do not classify Anbernic models as Switch devices: Fun-Esports’ 39-console comparison, checked October 29, 2026, places “Switch / PC” with Windows handhelds running native games, while its Anbernic Android entries are listed for older systems.

What happened to Yuzu?

Nintendo’s 2024 legal action against Yuzu’s maker, Tropic Haze LLC, ended with a proposed final judgment filed March 4, 2024, in Nintendo of America Inc. v. Tropic Haze LLC, case 24-cv-00082 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island. The settlement required $2.4 million in damages and included an injunction against trafficking in Yuzu or its source and certain circumvention devices. The court findings describe Yuzu as “primarily designed to circumvent and play Nintendo Switch games.”

The judgment addressed Yuzu’s use of unauthorized Nintendo cryptographic keys to decrypt Switch games at runtime and the DMCA anti-circumvention rules. The case does not mean every emulator is automatically unlawful, but successor forks are not Nintendo-licensed Anbernic features, and the legal dispute is a material reason not to treat unofficial Switch emulation as a safe substitute for a Nintendo console. Citra, the 3DS emulator in the same development lineage, also shut down in 2024.

Can an Anbernic run 3DS games?

Some Android models can run 3DS emulator software, but the answer depends on the model, the game, and the emulator. Linux XX devices are not the right hardware, and a single-screen Android handheld has to compromise the original console’s two-screen layout.

Android and the Azahar emulator

Azahar is a free, open-source Nintendo 3DS emulator for PC and mobile, including Android. Its project describes the software as unaffiliated with or endorsed by Nintendo. That Android version is why devices such as the RG556 and other Android Anbernics can enter the 3DS conversation at all.

However, Anbernic owners should not expect help from the official Azahar project. In October 2026, the developers announced that they would not officially support the RG DDS or other Anbernic devices after the company promoted unofficial, piracy-focused Azahar forks in advertising. The announcement says issues involving those devices will not be investigated or resolved; its statement was reproduced by GBAtemp and Time Extension and is available in the Azahar developers’ announcement. “Azahar Plus,” shown in promotional material, is an unofficial fork, not the supported Azahar build.

Why the RG DS Plus is not a 3DS handheld

The RG DS Plus is a Linux budget device aimed at Nintendo DS emulation, not a more affordable 3DS emulator. Android Authority reported a $94.99 MSRP, a Rockchip RK3568 processor, 1GB of RAM, no onboard storage, one analog stick, a 4,000 mAh battery, and two 1,024×768 screens. Its report says it can handle DS through software such as NNDDSS and Drastic via RetroArch, but explicitly rules out 3DS emulation. Two screens alone do not supply the processing capability or software compatibility a 3DS emulator needs.

What is known—and not yet verified—about the RG DDS

The RG DDS is Anbernic’s pre-order Android clamshell designed with 3DS-like screen geometry. Anbernic lists a 4.7-inch, 1,200×720 upper IPS display with a 5:3 ratio and a 4-inch, 960×720 lower IPS display with a 4:3 ratio; both are listed at 300 PPI and 500 nits. It is powered by a Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 (SG6275P) with an Adreno A22 GPU, runs Android 16, and includes a stylus. The battery is 6,000 mAh, with 27W charging, Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth 5.4.

The base configuration is listed with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage at $299.99 regular or $284.99 preorder. The upgraded 12GB/256GB version is listed at $364.99 regular or $349.99 preorder. Those prices and specifications are Anbernic’s October 2026 listings; the shipping start is December 10, 2026.

Anbernic promotional claims relayed by Nerdsheaven say the panels offer triple the resolution of original 3DS displays and up to five-times scaling on selected titles. These are manufacturer claims, not independently verified results. As of October 29, 2026, no independent reviewer had published a retail-unit RG DDS performance benchmark or a verified game-by-game 3DS compatibility list. Its screen layout makes the 3DS goal clear, but it cannot establish how well games run.

There is a limited workaround for some single-screen Android models: Pocket Tactics reported that a 2025 firmware update added USB-C external-display dual-screen support on T820 devices including the RG Slide, RG556, RG406H, RG406V, and RG Cube. That means using an external second display; it does not turn the handheld into a two-screen 3DS-style clamshell.

What do the Linux “XX” models handle?

The Linux XX family—including the RG35XX line, RG34XX, RG28XX, RG CubeXX, RG40XX H/V, and Linux RG DS Plus—uses Allwinner H700 hardware and is intended for older systems, generally Game Boy through PS1. N64 and Dreamcast performance is patchy, according to the catalogue description. These are not the models to buy for Switch or 3DS emulation; GameCube and PS2 emulation require an Android device in Anbernic’s lineup.

That distinction explains why an inexpensive XX model can still be a good fit for retro gaming without being a bargain route to modern Nintendo systems. Linux handhelds also boot quickly and have community firmware options such as GarlicOS and muOS, but neither changes their processing class into a Switch or 3DS platform.

What are the legal and preloaded-game concerns?

Emulator software and game files are separate issues. An emulator can be lawful software, but that does not make unauthorized copies of Nintendo games or circumvention tools lawful. The Yuzu judgment specifically addressed unauthorized keys and circumvention; this article does not provide ROM sources, key files, or instructions for copying protected games.

Some Anbernic listings and independent discussions distinguish bare hardware from devices sold with preloaded memory cards. Pocket Retro Gamer’s catalogue says licensed games are not included and describes game files as something the buyer supplies legally from owned games. The Entertainment Software Association took a sharply different view of the preloaded-handheld market in a 2026 submission to the U.S. Trade Representative, asking that such devices be treated as “superfakes” on the Notorious Markets list and naming Anbernic. Time Extension reported that a USTR decision could affect U.S. sales, but the request was not a final USTR listing in the reporting available on October 13, 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The ESA argued that products preloaded with unauthorized game copies reduce the friction that once separated consumers from piracy. This is an industry group’s position submitted to U.S. trade officials, not a final government decision about Anbernic. Buyers should avoid assuming that a memory card advertised with a large game catalogue is authorized.

Which device should you choose for Nintendo games?

Choose based on whether you want Nintendo’s supported experience or an Android emulation experiment. A retro handheld can be useful for older systems, but a Nintendo-shaped shell does not make it a Nintendo console.

  • For Switch games: use a Nintendo Switch or Switch 2. An Anbernic device does not run native Switch software, and unofficial emulator forks do not offer a verified full-library experience.
  • For 3DS cartridges: use Nintendo 3DS-family hardware. Used physical units remain the licensed cartridge route now that production has ended.
  • For older retro systems through PS1: a Linux XX model is the budget-oriented Anbernic lane.
  • For Android emulation through GameCube or PS2: consider a stronger Android Anbernic such as the RG556, while checking the specific game and system rather than assuming uniform performance.
  • For an Anbernic shaped around 3DS play: the RG DDS is the model designed for that layout, but wait for independent retail-unit compatibility reports if 3DS performance is the main reason to buy. Official Azahar support does not cover Anbernic devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does XX mean in an Anbernic model name?

In the model-number convention described by Pocket Retro Gamer, XX marks the budget Linux line. Other clues include H for horizontal, V for vertical, SP for a clamshell, M for metal, Cube for a square 1:1 display, and DS for a dual-screen design.

Can I still buy 3DS games digitally?

Nintendo 3DS production and eShop sales have ended. Used 3DS-family consoles remain the physical-cartridge option, but do not assume the discontinued digital storefront is available for new purchases.

Does the RG DDS officially call itself a 3DS emulator?

Anbernic’s product listing describes its Android 16 software, processor, and two screen sizes, but the retrieved listing does not use the terms Nintendo, Switch, or 3DS. Its 3DS-oriented purpose is conveyed by the screen proportions, stylus, and promotional materials—not a Nintendo affiliation.
