For most bench testing, education, troubleshooting, and design work, choose a digital storage oscilloscope (DSO). It can capture and store a waveform—including a one-off event—so you can inspect and analyze it after it happens. Choose an analog CRT oscilloscope when direct CRT display, a specific teaching or repair workflow, or compatibility with legacy equipment matters more than stored digital analysis.
That is a general recommendation, not a model ranking: the right scope depends on the signals you need to measure, how often they occur, and the instrument’s bandwidth, sample rate, memory, inputs, probes, and channels.
How analog and digital oscilloscopes display a signal
Analog CRT oscilloscope
An analog scope amplifies the incoming signal and displays it directly on a cathode-ray tube (CRT). Its controls and display support direct observation of a live signal. A conventional non-storage analog scope is less suited to preserving a brief transient after it passes; analog storage scopes exist, but are a special case.

Digital storage oscilloscope
A DSO converts the input with an analog-to-digital converter (ADC), then processes samples for display. Because it stores the waveform, you can revisit an acquisition and use functions such as automated measurements, math, search, and export when the model supports them. For background on scope operation and instrument types, see Tektronix’s oscilloscope overview and oscilloscope types primer.

Which type fits your work?
| Need or preference | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Capture a single-shot transient or an event that happens infrequently | DSO | It can store an acquisition for later inspection, subject to its bandwidth, sample rate, acquisition mode, and memory. |
| Review waveforms, run measurements, or use math and search tools | DSO | Stored digital records support post-acquisition analysis; available functions depend on the model. |
| Work with analog signals only | Either, depending on task | A basic DSO may be sufficient; an analog CRT scope may suit a workflow centered on direct display. |
| Correlate analog signals with digital logic | Mixed-signal oscilloscope (MSO) | An MSO adds digital logic channels to the analog channels. |
| Need spectrum analysis alongside oscilloscope functions | Mixed-domain scope | Some mixed-domain instruments add spectrum analysis; verify the specific model’s capabilities. |
| Need a CRT display or compatibility with a legacy workflow | Analog CRT scope | These are specific reasons to prefer an analog instrument, rather than a general advantage for every measurement. |
There is no established like-for-like result showing one technology is universally more accurate or faster. Measurement performance depends on the model, its condition and calibration, the probe setup, acquisition settings, and the signal. Keysight’s analog-versus-digital guide describes the basic acquisition distinction; compare actual instrument specifications for your application.
Choose a DSO by matching its specifications to your signal
Bandwidth and signal edge speed
Bandwidth describes the analog front end, not how often a DSO takes samples. Tektronix defines the bandwidth point as the frequency where a sinusoidal input has fallen to 70.7% of its true amplitude (−3 dB). A signal’s fast edges can contain frequency components that a clock-rate-only estimate misses, so consider edge speed as well as the signal’s fundamental or clock frequency. See Tektronix’s guide to bandwidth and other scope specifications.

As manufacturer rules of thumb, Keysight recommends bandwidth of at least 3× the highest sine-wave frequency for purely analog measurements and generally at least 5× the highest digital clock rate for digital applications. These are not universal laws; Keysight cautions that the clock-rate guideline does not account for lower-rate signals with fast edges. For its maximum specified sample rate, Keysight recommends real-time bandwidth of at least 4–5× that bandwidth. These recommendations appear in its 2020 article, “Tips: How to Select an Oscilloscope Before You Buy – Part I”. Match the scope’s rise-time performance to the signal and leave headroom appropriate to the accuracy you need.
Sample rate and record length
Sample rate is how often a digital scope takes samples; it is distinct from analog bandwidth. A high sample rate cannot restore signal content removed by a bandwidth-limited front end, and a high bandwidth rating alone does not prove that a scope can capture a particular single-shot signal adequately.

Record length is the number of points in a waveform record and determines how much data can be captured. For a fixed record length, increasing the sample rate shortens the time window represented by that record. Check bandwidth, sample rate, and record length together against the event you need to see. Tektronix’s reconstruction guidance is conditional: its primer gives at least 2.5× the signal’s highest frequency component with sin(x)/x interpolation, or 10× with linear interpolation. Those figures rely on the stated interpolation assumptions, not a universal sampling rule.
Waveform capture rate and triggering
Waveform capture rate is the number of separate waveforms an instrument acquires per second. It is not the number of samples within one waveform. When searching for rare glitches, capture rate affects the opportunities to observe an event; triggering determines which signal conditions the scope uses to start or retain an acquisition. Check that the available trigger types suit the fault you are trying to catch.

Channels, inputs, and probes
Count the signals you need to observe at the same time, including any digital logic channels. Check the scope’s input range and voltage limits for the measurement; limits vary by model. Then match each probe’s bandwidth, attenuation, voltage rating, connector or interface, and intended application to both the instrument and circuit. Probe compatibility is part of obtaining a useful measurement, not an afterthought. Tektronix discusses these selection considerations in its evaluation primer and oscilloscope selection guide.

- List the signals. Note their highest relevant frequency, edge speed, amplitude, and whether the event repeats or may occur only once.
- Set the capture requirement. Decide how much pre-event and post-event time you need, how many signals must be captured together, and which trigger conditions can isolate the event.
- Compare bandwidth, sample rate, and record length together. Confirm the instrument can resolve the signal content and retain the required time window at the needed sample rate.
- Check the measurement path. Verify channel count, input limits, probe bandwidth and voltage rating, attenuation, and connector compatibility.
- Choose the instrument class. Consider a basic DSO for ordinary analog measurements, an MSO for correlated analog and logic signals, or a mixed-domain scope if spectrum analysis is needed. Choose analog when a CRT or legacy workflow is a concrete requirement.
- Check the exact configuration. Confirm model-specific specifications, enabled options, calibration status, and serviceability—especially for a used instrument. Family-level figures do not guarantee every configuration has every feature.
What to verify before choosing a particular scope
Specifications differ substantially within product families, so use family figures only as a starting point. For example, Tektronix’s selection guide lists the TBS1000C family at 50–200 MHz bandwidth and 1 GS/s, and the TBS2000B family at 70–200 MHz and up to 2 GS/s. These are family ranges from that guide, not a recommendation or a claim that every configuration includes every feature. Confirm current specifications for the exact model and configuration before buying.
