The AMD Ryzen 7 255 is a laptop processor built for mainstream performance notebooks. It has 8 Zen 3+ CPU cores, 16 threads, a Radeon 780M integrated GPU, and a configurable power range that lets manufacturers use it in relatively thin laptops or larger performance systems.
Its name can be misleading: the Ryzen 7 255 is not a Zen 5 Ryzen AI 300 chip. It is much closer to the Ryzen 7 8845HS and Ryzen 7 7840HS family, but it does not include the dedicated XDNA NPU found in those Ryzen AI processors. Laptop design, cooling, memory, and power limits have a major effect on its benchmark results.

Zen 3+ is older than the Zen 4 and Zen 5 architectures used in newer Ryzen mobile processors. The 3.8 GHz base clock and 5.1 GHz maximum boost clock still give the Ryzen 7 255 strong single-threaded performance, but the processor is not automatically faster than every newer or higher-power Ryzen 7 chip. The cooling system and sustained wattage often matter more than the product name.
For office work, web applications, programming, and general multitasking, it has ample CPU performance. It is also suitable for moderate video editing and content creation, particularly in a laptop with dual-channel memory and a good cooling system. A discrete GPU remains preferable for serious 3D rendering, high-resolution video effects, and modern games at high settings.
Ryzen 7 255 benchmark expectations
Benchmark databases do not produce one universal Ryzen 7 255 score. The same processor can score very differently in a 14-inch thin laptop and a 16-inch model with a high sustained power limit. The figures below are useful expectations for properly configured systems, not guaranteed results for every laptop.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Benchmark | Typical expectation | What changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| Cinebench R23 single-core | Approximately 1,750–1,950 | Cooling, boost behavior, and firmware |
| Cinebench R23 multi-core | Approximately 13,000–16,000 | Sustained CPU wattage and thermal limits |
| Geekbench 6 single-core | Approximately 2,400–2,650 | Memory speed and short-term boost |
| Geekbench 6 multi-core | Approximately 11,000–13,500 | Power mode and cooling |
| PCMark 10 overall | Typically around 7,000–8,000 | SSD, memory, display resolution, and background software |
These ranges should not be treated as laboratory measurements. Before comparing two laptops, check that their tests used the same benchmark version and similar power mode. A plugged-in “Performance” result is not a fair comparison with a battery-powered “Balanced” result.
How it compares with related Ryzen processors
The Ryzen 7 255 is broadly in the performance class of the Ryzen 7 7735HS and Ryzen 7 6800HS, because those chips also use eight Zen 3-family cores and a Radeon 680M-class integrated GPU. Its higher 5.1 GHz boost clock can help in lightly threaded work.
It is generally behind a well-cooled Ryzen 7 7840HS or Ryzen 7 8845HS in CPU performance. Those processors use Zen 4 cores and also include a dedicated AI engine. However, a low-power Zen 4 laptop can still lose to a high-power Ryzen 7 255 laptop in sustained multi-core testing. Laptop configuration prevents a simple ranking based only on the processor label.
Radeon 780M integrated graphics
The integrated Radeon 780M has 12 compute units and a maximum clock speed of 2.7 GHz. It is substantially more capable than basic integrated graphics and can handle esports games, older AAA titles, and many modern games at 1080p with reduced settings.
Recommended Free Tools
| Use case | What to expect |
|---|---|
| League of Legends, Valorant, Dota 2 | Comfortable 1080p play in suitable laptop configurations |
| Older AAA games | Usually playable at 1080p medium or low settings |
| New demanding AAA games | Often requires low settings, upscaling, or 720p output |
| Video playback | Hardware decoding for common modern codecs, depending on the laptop software stack |
| External displays | Depends on the laptop’s USB-C, HDMI, and DisplayPort wiring |
Integrated graphics performance is particularly sensitive to memory configuration. Two memory channels are important; a laptop with slower or restricted memory can perform noticeably worse than one using fast LPDDR5X. Because the RAM is normally soldered, check the memory capacity and speed before buying. Adding a graphics card later is not possible.
Does the Ryzen 7 255 have an NPU?
No. The Ryzen 7 255 does not have the dedicated XDNA neural-processing unit used by AMD’s Ryzen AI 300 and Ryzen AI 200 products. It can still run AI applications using its CPU or Radeon GPU, but it should not be advertised as a Ryzen AI processor or as having a specified TOPS rating for an NPU.

This distinction matters for buyers looking for Windows Studio Effects, local AI features, or applications that specifically require an NPU. Software support can also depend on Windows, drivers, and the application itself, so a processor’s AI branding is not a guarantee that every AI workload will run faster.
