Some Amazon Music downloads stop working when a subscription ends; purchased tracks are different. Prime, Standard, and Unlimited downloads are offline access to subscription music, not files you own. They depend on an active eligible plan, continued catalog availability, and Amazon’s offline-playback requirements. Music you purchased is listed separately in your account and can be downloaded as a file for local storage.
Do Amazon Music downloads expire?
Subscription downloads can become unavailable when the plan that provides access expires or is canceled. They can also stop working if a track leaves the catalog or Amazon’s offline-playback requirements are not met. A download is therefore best understood as a temporary app cache for listening offline—not a permanent copy of the song.
Purchased songs and albums follow a different rule. Amazon says purchased content is permanently tied to the account and remains available in the Purchased library. You can download purchased music as files and copy those files to another folder or device. That account-based availability is not an unconditional promise that content can never be affected: Amazon’s terms reserve rights to change services and remove content in certain circumstances.
The distinction matters because the same artist and track can appear in both parts of the app. A downloaded Unlimited album may look identical to an album you bought from Amazon’s digital store, but the rights are not identical. One is licensed for the duration of catalog access; the other is recorded as a purchase in your account.

What happens to downloads if I cancel Amazon Music Unlimited?
When an Unlimited subscription ends, its catalog downloads no longer provide playback. Amazon’s cancellation help says the app will gray out Unlimited songs and podcasts in the Library and remove the Playback option.
The song may still appear in your Library, but its presence there does not mean you own it or can keep listening. The same underlying distinction applies if a plan expires rather than being canceled: subscription access has ended even if the app has not yet refreshed its display. Prime or Standard downloads are also tied to the applicable subscription and catalog access.
If a title you expected to keep becomes unavailable, first determine whether it was purchased or downloaded from a subscription catalog. Those are different rights, even when the same track appears in the same app. A gray title is generally an access signal, not proof that the audio file has been permanently deleted from your phone.
How can I tell whether a song is purchased or just downloaded?
Check Library > Purchased for music you bought. Amazon’s help page for purchased content says: “This content is permanently tied to your Amazon account and available for playback at any time.” If the track is not in Purchased and you accessed it through Prime, Standard, or Unlimited, treat it as subscription content rather than an owned file.
- Open the Amazon Music app and go to Library.
- Open Purchased and look for the song or album there.
- If it is listed, use Amazon’s purchased-content download option to save a file. If it is not listed, check which plan or playlist gave you access; a subscription download is not a purchased copy.
Removing a purchased download from a device only frees storage; it does not remove the purchase from the account’s Purchased library. Conversely, having a subscription song saved for offline playback does not turn it into a purchase. If you use more than one Amazon account, verify that the app is signed in to the account used for the transaction before assuming a purchase is missing.
Which Amazon Music plans allow offline listening?
Offline rights depend on the plan and the type of content. Prime’s offline listening is limited to All-Access Playlists, while eligible Standard and Unlimited plans provide broader offline playback. The Unlimited Single Device Plan does not include offline playback.

Amazon’s FAQ describes a catalog of about 100 million songs, but catalog size does not mean every title is available for every plan or remains available indefinitely. Plan eligibility and title licensing still control what you can download. If offline listening is the reason you subscribe, check the specific plan terms rather than assuming that every Unlimited-branded option has identical features.

| Prime All-Access Playlist | All-Access Playlist downloads only | A title may become unavailable when Prime ends or availability changes. | No. It is accessible only in the Amazon Music app. |

Amazon’s Android download help makes the subscription/purchase boundary explicit: “Downloaded Amazon Music Unlimited, Amazon Music Standard, and All-Access Playlist songs are only accessible within the Amazon Music app.” Its Android instructions for downloading files apply to purchased content. The app’s download control alone does not tell you that a file is transferable.
Can I keep Amazon Music downloads after my subscription ends?
You can keep listening to subscription catalog downloads only while the relevant access remains valid; you cannot preserve that access by copying the app’s cached data. If you want a transferable local file, you need to purchase the track or album and download it through the purchased-content workflow.
Amazon says its subscription downloads cannot be exported, copied to CDs, or copied to external storage. That restriction applies even if the song is physically stored on your phone for offline playback. The offline copy is managed by the app and is not a conventional music file you can move to a music player.
For a purchased track, download the file using Amazon’s instructions, then copy it to another folder or compatible device if you want a separate local copy. Removing the app’s downloaded copy does not undo the purchase. Keep in mind that account-backed access and a locally stored file are different things: a downloaded file offers local convenience, while the purchase remains associated with the Amazon account.
This also answers the common “new phone” question. Subscription downloads must be obtained again through the Amazon Music app on the new device, assuming the plan and title are still eligible. A purchased file can be copied like other local music files, while the purchase itself can also be retrieved from the account’s Purchased area.

Why might an offline song be unavailable even while my plan is active?
A current subscription does not guarantee that every previously downloaded title will play in every circumstance. Amazon identifies catalog changes and offline-app requirements as reasons access can fail.
- The title left the catalog. Subscription access depends on a title remaining available in Amazon Music. Amazon’s terms reserve the ability to remove content from Store, Unlimited, or Prime, including when legal reasons prevent continued storage or access.
- The app has not checked in over Wi-Fi. Amazon says offline titles may become unavailable if the app has not been used while connected to Wi-Fi in the past month. Connect the device to Wi-Fi and open the app so it can refresh its access.
- The plan or membership is no longer active. An expired or canceled Prime membership, Standard subscription, or Unlimited subscription can make related titles unavailable.
- The download needs refreshing. Amazon says an app update may require a re-download. If the title is still available under your plan, connect to the internet and download it again in the app.
These checks help distinguish a stale offline copy from a change in account rights. If a track appears in Purchased, look for it there rather than trying to restore a subscription download. If it is subscription content, confirm the plan supports offline listening and that the title remains available before downloading again.
What should I do when a downloaded song is gray?
- Connect the phone or tablet to Wi-Fi and open Amazon Music. This allows the app to perform the periodic access check Amazon describes.
- Check the account’s membership status and confirm that it is the account that made the purchase or holds the subscription.
- Look up the title in the catalog. If it is no longer offered, a subscription copy cannot be repaired by downloading it repeatedly.
- Check Library > Purchased. A purchased version should be handled through the Purchased library, not the subscription download list.
- If the title is still eligible, delete the stale offline copy only if necessary and download it again after the app is online. An app update can also make a fresh download necessary.
Do not try to solve a licensing problem by moving folders in Android storage or copying app data to an SD card. Amazon’s subscription downloads are app-only, so those actions do not create a playable, transferable file.
How much storage do Amazon Music downloads use?
Amazon’s FAQ, accessed in 2026, gives an example for a 3½-minute song: about 9 MB in SD quality, 51 MB in HD, and 153 MB in Ultra HD. Actual size varies with song length and the quality setting, so a long album or playlist can consume substantially more space. These figures describe storage, not ownership or the length of time a subscription download will remain playable.
Higher-quality files also affect streaming requirements. Amazon recommends roughly 1.5–2 Mbps for HD streaming and 5–10 Mbps for Ultra HD streaming. Those are Amazon’s product-guidance figures; they do not change the app-only rule for subscription downloads and are not a guarantee that a particular connection will avoid buffering.
Should I cancel before or after saving music for offline playback?
Saving more subscription songs before cancellation does not preserve access to them afterward. The relevant plan must remain active, and the tracks must remain in the catalog; a larger offline library does not change those conditions.

If you are deciding whether to keep a plan, identify which offline listening you rely on. Prime downloads are limited to All-Access Playlists, and the Unlimited Single Device Plan has no offline playback. If you need an individual track to remain available independently of a subscription catalog, check whether you already purchased it in Library > Purchased; otherwise, the subscription download is not a substitute for buying a file.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
There is no storage trick, backup folder, or CD-burning step that converts a subscription cache into owned music. The practical choices are to keep an eligible plan for app-based offline playback, use a plan that actually includes offline rights, or buy the music and use Amazon’s file-download instructions.
Amazon can also change services or remove content under its terms. For that reason, do not treat either a cached subscription song or an account-backed purchase as an absolute guarantee that Amazon Music’s service and catalog will never change.

What internet speed does Amazon recommend for HD or Ultra HD streaming?
Amazon’s FAQ recommends 1.5–2 Mbps for HD streaming and 5–10 Mbps for Ultra HD streaming. These are Amazon’s product guidance figures for streaming, not independent measurements or a statement of the storage needed for downloads.
Can I move an Amazon Music Unlimited download to another phone or music player?
No. Amazon says Unlimited, Standard, and Prime All-Access Playlist downloads are accessible only within the Amazon Music app and cannot be exported, copied to CDs, or copied to external storage. Purchased files can be downloaded and copied using Amazon’s instructions.
Will purchased music disappear if I cancel Unlimited?
Amazon says purchased songs and albums remain permanently tied to your Amazon account and stay in the Purchased library. Canceling Unlimited removes subscription playback, not the purchase. Amazon’s terms still reserve limited rights to change services or remove content.
