Choose the Amazon Fire TV Cube (3rd Generation, 2022) for hands-free Alexa, an HDMI input for a connected device, Wi-Fi 6E, and explicitly listed HDR10+ and AV1 support. Choose the NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro (2019) for Android TV with Chromecast, Gigabit Ethernet, two USB 3.0 ports, expandable storage, AI upscaling, and NVIDIA gaming features. Both support 4K playback and Dolby Vision; the better fit depends on your devices, network, and preferred platform.

At a glance: Fire TV Cube vs. SHIELD TV Pro

Upscaling Amazon describes it as a 4K streaming device; its listed specifications do not make an equivalent AI-upscaling claim NVIDIA lists AI-enhanced upscaling up to 4K/60
HDMI and USB HDMI 2.1 input and output; one USB 2.0 port HDMI 2.0b; two USB 3.0 Type-A ports
Networking Tri-band Wi-Fi 6E; 10/100 Ethernet 802.11ac 2×2 MIMO Wi-Fi; Gigabit Ethernet

Gaming Amazon ecosystem; the cited Cube specifications do not identify SHIELD-style NVIDIA gaming features GeForce NOW 4K HDR cloud gaming and Android games; GeForce NOW requires a compatible controller or keyboard and mouse
Update information Amazon lists FireOS 7.7.1.6 (36005355908) and security updates at least through December 31, 2030 NVIDIA lists Android TV 11 and says SHIELD Experience upgrades come directly from NVIDIA; a dated support end point is not stated on the cited product page

These are manufacturer specifications, not results from comparative hands-on tests. Formats, features, and app availability may vary by content source or region. Check the Amazon Fire TV Cube specifications and NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro specifications for current details.

Which one should you choose?

Choose the Fire TV Cube if Alexa and HDMI input matter

  • You want to control compatible smart-home devices or streaming functions with hands-free Alexa, without first picking up the remote.
  • You want to connect a compatible device, such as a cable box, game console, or webcam, through the Cube’s HDMI input.
  • Your TV or video sources make use of HDR10+ or AV1, formats Amazon explicitly lists for this model.
  • Your home has Wi-Fi 6E and you prefer using newer Wi-Fi rather than relying on Ethernet; the Cube’s wired port is 10/100.

Choose the SHIELD TV Pro if expandability and NVIDIA features matter

  • You want Android TV with Chromecast 4K built in and Google Assistant.
  • You plan to connect USB storage or peripherals: the Pro has two USB 3.0 ports and supports storage expansion with a flash drive or hard drive.
  • You want Gigabit Ethernet for a wired connection, or want to use NVIDIA’s listed AI upscaling feature.
  • You want GeForce NOW cloud gaming or Android games on the streaming device. Confirm regional service availability and compatible controller requirements before relying on GeForce NOW.
  • You want the SHIELD’s documented Dolby Atmos support and passthrough for Dolby TrueHD, DTS-X, and DTS-HD.

Neither choice is automatically better for picture quality

Both devices list 4K playback and Dolby Vision. The Cube’s specifications additionally name HDR10+ and AV1; SHIELD’s page lists NVIDIA AI-enhanced upscaling up to 4K/60. Those specification differences can guide a compatibility decision, but they do not establish which device produces a better picture in a particular room or app. Check the formats supported by your TV and the services or files you actually use.

Video formats and upscaling

Both devices cover common 4K HDR needs, but their published format lists are not identical. Amazon lists Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG for the Cube, plus HEVC and AV1 up to 4K/60. It also lists VP9 up to 4K/60 with limitations and H.264 up to 4K/30 or 1080p/60. NVIDIA lists Dolby Vision and HDR10 for SHIELD Pro, along with HEVC up to 4K HDR/60 and VP8, VP9, and H.264 playback up to 4K/60. NVIDIA’s cited specifications do not list HDR10+ or AV1 support; that is a statement about the specification page, not a claim that every possible playback path is ruled out.

NVIDIA explicitly advertises AI-enhanced upscaling up to 4K/60. Amazon’s Cube specification page does not list a comparable AI-upscaling feature. If much of your viewing is below 4K and upscaling is a deciding factor, that makes SHIELD the option with the clearly documented feature. It is not an independent measurement proving superior image quality.

Ports, wired networking, and storage

The Cube has HDMI 2.1 input and output, with ARC on its output, HDCP 2.3, one USB 2.0 port, an IR extender, and 10/100 Ethernet. Its HDMI input is useful if you want a compatible source device routed through the Cube; confirm that your intended device and viewing setup work with that arrangement. Its USB port is slower and less numerous than SHIELD’s.

SHIELD Pro has HDMI 2.0b with HDCP 2.2 and CEC, two USB 3.0 Type-A ports, and Gigabit Ethernet. NVIDIA documents expanding its 16 GB internal storage with USB flash drives or hard drives, and its 2019 launch announcement specifically describes the Pro’s USB ports for Plex Media Server and external drives. This makes SHIELD the more flexible fit for attached storage and USB accessories.

For network choice, the Cube has tri-band Wi-Fi 6E, while SHIELD has 802.11ac dual-band Wi-Fi and faster Gigabit wired Ethernet. Which is more useful depends on your router, wiring, and network conditions; a newer Wi-Fi standard does not guarantee faster streaming in every home.

Voice control and operating systems

The Cube runs Fire OS 7 and has a four-microphone array for hands-free Alexa, in addition to its remote microphone. Amazon says compatible devices can connect through its HDMI input. This combination suits households already using Alexa or Amazon’s Fire TV interface.

SHIELD Pro is listed with Android TV 11, Chromecast 4K built in, and Google Assistant. NVIDIA also says Alexa compatibility is available through an Echo device. Choose based on the ecosystem and apps you prefer; app availability can differ by geography and can change over time.

Software and security support

Amazon’s Fire TV software update listing gives the Cube’s latest version as FireOS 7.7.1.6 (36005355908), and Amazon’s security page says the Cube 3rd Generation will receive security updates at least through December 31, 2030. These are live support details and may be updated by Amazon. See Amazon’s Fire TV software update listing and Amazon’s Fire TV security update policy.

NVIDIA’s product page lists Android TV 11 and says SHIELD Experience upgrades come directly from NVIDIA, but it does not establish a dated end of support. The available information therefore gives a specific security horizon for the Cube, not a directly comparable end date for SHIELD. The age of SHIELD’s listed Android TV version alone does not establish that updates have ended.

What to know about the model generations

This comparison is between the Fire TV Cube 3rd Generation, which Amazon documents as a 2022 model, and the NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro generation launched on October 28, 2019. It does not compare earlier Cube generations or the non-Pro SHIELD TV. NVIDIA’s 2019 launch announcement said Tegra X1+ offered “up to 25 percent more performance” than its predecessor; that was NVIDIA’s launch claim, not a current independent benchmark. The same announcement listed a launch price starting at $149, which is not a current price. No current street prices or stock levels are established here, so compare live prices and the exact model listings before purchase. Read NVIDIA’s SHIELD TV launch announcement for the original launch details.
