If you need affordable mental-health support, choose a human crisis service, licensed teletherapy, a community or peer program, or structured psychological self-help before relying on an AI chatbot. The right option depends on urgency, clinical severity, privacy needs, location, language, disability access, schedule, and whether you need diagnosis or medication management.

AI chatbots can offer conversational convenience, but the American Psychological Association says they should not replace qualified mental-health providers. A safer plan combines the least intensive support that fits your needs with a clear route to professional care if symptoms worsen.

First decide whether this is a crisis

AI chatbots are not crisis services. Treat the situation as urgent if you have suicidal intent, an immediate danger of harming yourself or someone else, cannot stay safe, have severe confusion or possible psychosis, or have a medical emergency.

If you are in the United States

  1. Call or text 988, the U.S. Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or use the 988 Lifeline chat.
  2. Tell the responder plainly what is happening, whether you have a plan or access to means, and whether you are alone.
  3. If danger is immediate or you need emergency medical help, use emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department.

NIMH’s 2025 virtual-support guidance directs people who are struggling or having suicidal thoughts to 988. SAMHSA describes 988 and other behavioral-health hotlines as immediate contact with human responders.

If you are outside the United States

Call your local emergency number or national crisis line. Do not wait for an AI conversation to escalate the situation; use a service staffed for immediate safety decisions.

What to use instead of an AI therapist

The options below serve different purposes. A crisis line is for immediate safety, not ongoing therapy. Teletherapy provides continuing contact with a licensed professional. Groups and community services add social connection and may reduce cost or isolation. Structured self-help teaches psychological skills at low intensity. Friends, family, and peer groups can support a safety plan but cannot replace clinical assessment when symptoms are severe.

Licensed teletherapy with a real person

Teletherapy is the closest direct substitute for an online “AI therapist” because it preserves remote access while adding a human clinician. HHS lists video, phone, and text therapy, as well as telepsychiatry.

Video and phone therapy

Video sessions resemble office visits and make it easier to use conversation, pauses, and visual cues. Phone sessions can work when bandwidth, camera privacy, or disability access makes video difficult. Ask whether the clinician is licensed in your location and whether the service treats your concern.

Asynchronous text therapy

Text therapy keeps the convenience of writing on your own schedule while retaining a human responder. Before enrolling, confirm how quickly messages are answered, whether there are scheduled live sessions, what happens outside service hours, and how emergencies are handled. Asynchronous messaging should never be your only plan for an acute crisis.

Telepsychiatry

Telepsychiatry can include psychiatric evaluation and medication management. If you may need medication, ask whether the service includes a prescriber, how follow-up is scheduled, and how prescriptions are coordinated with local pharmacies. A therapy-only service cannot provide that part of care.

Questions to ask before your first appointment

  • Is the clinician licensed to practice where I am physically located?
  • What conditions and levels of severity do you treat, and what would require referral to in-person or emergency care?
  • Are video, phone, and text options available, and can I change formats?
  • How are records stored, who can access them, and what privacy protections apply?
  • How often will we meet, how can I contact the practice between sessions, and what is the cancellation policy?
  • Can you coordinate with my primary-care clinician or psychiatrist if I consent?

Group, family, and community care

Virtual group therapy

Virtual groups can cost less than individual therapy and can reduce isolation by adding peer perspective. The group format is not interchangeable with one-to-one assessment: ask whether a licensed facilitator leads it, how members are screened, what confidentiality rules apply, and what support exists between meetings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Family or couples sessions

When conflict, caregiving, or household stress is central, family or couples work can address the environment affecting symptoms. Confirm that the clinician explains confidentiality and how information is handled when more than one person is a client.

University clinics and community organizations

NIMH recommends looking at university psychology or psychiatry clinics. Training clinics may offer supervised care, and community organizations may provide counseling, support groups, or referrals. Ask about waitlists, eligibility, language access, disability accommodations, and whether services are available in person, remotely, or both.

Public and peer resources for people without insurance

SAMHSA points uninsured readers toward state agencies, school health centers, peer groups, and community organizations. These routes differ by location and eligibility, so contact the program directly to ask what documentation, income criteria, residency rules, or appointment limits apply.

Structured psychological self-help

Self-help is more than reading general wellness advice when it follows a defined psychological method and practice schedule. The World Health Organization describes guided and unguided self-help as evidence-based, scalable support for depression, anxiety, stress, and related conditions.

Guided versus unguided formats

Guided self-help pairs a workbook, digital course, or video program with brief support from a trained person. In some settings, guided programs achieve outcomes comparable to more intensive care while requiring less clinician time. Unguided self-help is completed independently and can be useful for mild-to-moderate symptoms when you can stay safe and monitor your response.

Formats and WHO materials

WHO’s 2026 manual covers delivery through digital platforms, printed materials, and video. It includes the “Step-by-Step” program and “Doing What Matters in Times of Stress.” A printed manual can be useful when screen access, privacy, or internet reliability is limited; a digital or video format may be easier to use with reminders or accessibility settings.

How to use self-help safely

  1. Choose a program that states its psychological approach, intended symptoms, format, and level of guidance.
  2. Set a realistic practice schedule and record what you do, how you feel, and whether functioning changes.
  3. Use a human support person or guide when available, especially if motivation, concentration, or reading access is limited.
  4. Set a review date. If symptoms are worsening, severe, or interfering with safety, seek professional assessment instead of adding more worksheets.

Self-help should supplement—not delay—clinical care when symptoms are severe or worsening.

Trusted personal support and peer connection

A friend, family member, peer-support group, faith community, or community organization can provide connection, encouragement, and practical help with appointments or daily routines. This support is valuable when loneliness or low motivation makes formal care harder to start.

Build a simple safety plan

  • List warning signs that tell you your mental state is deteriorating.
  • Name people you can contact and specify what you want them to do, such as stay with you, help remove access to dangerous items, or accompany you to care.
  • Write down professional and crisis contacts and keep the plan where you can reach it.
  • Identify places and activities that help you remain around other people while you arrange care.

Personal support is not a substitute for assessment when there is suicidal intent, inability to stay safe, severe confusion, psychosis, or a medical emergency.

Comparison of affordable alternatives

Route Urgency and crisis coverage Licensed clinician Evidence and structure Continuity Access considerations Cost and insurance
988 or another crisis line Designed for immediate safety and urgent emotional support Human crisis responder; not a routine therapist Crisis intervention rather than ongoing psychotherapy May provide referrals; not scheduled treatment by default Call, text, or chat in the U.S.; use local equivalents elsewhere Free in the U.S.; arrangements elsewhere vary
Licensed teletherapy Routine care; ask how emergencies are handled Yes, when the provider is appropriately licensed Clinical treatment; approach and intensity depend on provider Scheduled video, phone, or text contact Can help when travel, mobility, or local-provider access is difficult; language and disability access vary Eligibility, provider fees, and insurance coverage vary
Telepsychiatry Routine psychiatric care; not a replacement for emergency services Psychiatric clinician when offered Evaluation and, where appropriate, medication management Follow-up depends on the practice Location, prescribing rules, pharmacy coordination, and appointment availability vary Eligibility and insurance coverage vary
Virtual group therapy Routine support; confirm the emergency plan May be led by a licensed clinician Structured group treatment plus peer perspective Recurring group meetings Can reduce isolation; schedule, language, privacy, and disability access vary May cost less than individual therapy; fees and coverage vary
University or community program Usually routine support; ask what urgent help is available May include supervised trainees, licensed staff, or peer workers Depends on the program Depends on funding, staffing, and waitlist Eligibility may be tied to location, school, income, or program rules State agencies, school health centers, and community organizations set their own eligibility and fees
Guided psychological self-help Low-intensity support; not for an unmanaged crisis Brief guidance may be available; not necessarily a treating clinician Evidence-based programs; some outcomes can compare with more intensive care in certain settings Practice follows a defined program and review schedule Digital, printed, or video delivery; useful where clinician time is limited Program and eligibility determine cost; no universal price
Unguided self-help Low-intensity support; stop and seek assessment if symptoms worsen No clinician required Structured materials can teach skills independently Self-directed Can be used privately and offline when printed Price and availability depend on the material and provider
Friends, family, or peer support Connection and practical help; not crisis treatment No Supportive rather than a clinical intervention Relationship-dependent Often flexible, but privacy and reliability depend on the people involved No standard fee or insurance pathway

How to choose the right route

  1. Rate urgency. If you cannot stay safe or have imminent danger, use crisis or emergency services rather than self-help or routine scheduling.
  2. Define the job you need done. Choose therapy for ongoing symptoms and behavior change, telepsychiatry for evaluation or medication management, a group for connection and shared experience, or self-help for structured skills practice.
  3. Check clinical fit. Ask about the provider’s license, conditions treated, severity limits, referral process, and whether care is individual, family, or group based.
  4. Check practical fit. Compare video, phone, text, and in-person options against your internet access, privacy at home, work schedule, mobility, hearing or vision needs, language, and location.
  5. Check financial fit. Ask the provider, insurer, state agency, school clinic, or community organization about eligibility, covered services, fees, sliding arrangements if offered, and wait times. There is no universal price because costs vary by country, provider, insurance, and eligibility.
  6. Plan follow-up before starting. Know the next appointment or practice date, how to contact a human between sessions, and what to do if the program is not helping.

Privacy and data handling

The APA warns that many AI chatbots and wellness apps lack scientific validation, safety protocols, regulatory oversight, and health-care privacy protections. Treat anything entered into a general-purpose chatbot as information that may not receive the same protections as a clinician’s health record.

Questions for human and digital services

  • What information is collected during registration, messaging, video, or payment?
  • Is it used for care only, or also for analytics, product improvement, or advertising?
  • How long are messages, recordings, transcripts, and notes retained?
  • Who can access the information, and can you request deletion or a copy?
  • Does the service explain limits to confidentiality, including safety emergencies and legal requirements?

Use a private device and network when possible, enable account security, and avoid sharing identifying details in any tool whose data practices you do not understand.

Where an AI chatbot may fit—and where it does not

An AI tool can help you draft questions for an appointment, organize a journal, explain a coping exercise already recommended by a clinician, or remind you to practice a skill. Those uses are administrative or educational, not diagnosis or psychotherapy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Do not rely on GenAI chatbots and wellness apps to deliver psychotherapy or psychological treatment.” — American Psychological Association health advisory, 2025

Do not ask a chatbot to decide whether you are safe, replace a clinician’s assessment, manage medication, or handle suicidal thoughts, psychosis, severe confusion, or a medical emergency. Move to a human crisis or clinical service when any of those conditions apply.

When to step up from self-help or peer support

Arrange professional assessment if symptoms persist, interfere with work or relationships, cause major sleep or appetite changes, lead to escalating substance use, or make daily tasks difficult. Escalate sooner when symptoms are rapidly worsening, you are losing touch with reality, or you cannot follow your safety plan.

A practical stepped-care plan can start with a university or community program, guided self-help, or a group while you wait for individual care, provided you remain safe and have a clear escalation route. Keep the human contact active rather than switching between anonymous apps without follow-up.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Key takeaways for an affordable plan

  • Use a human crisis responder for immediate danger; an AI chatbot is not an emergency service.
  • Choose licensed teletherapy or telepsychiatry when you need assessment, ongoing treatment, or medication management.
  • Consider virtual groups, university clinics, state agencies, school health centers, and community organizations when individual care is difficult to afford or access.
  • Use WHO-described guided or unguided self-help for structured, lower-intensity practice, with review points and human escalation when needed.
  • Use friends, family, and peer groups for connection and safety-plan support, not as a replacement for clinical care in severe situations.
  • Check privacy, licensing, accessibility, continuity, eligibility, and total out-of-pocket cost before committing.
