Alphabet’s largest business is Google Services, while Microsoft reports across three segments that include productivity, cloud, Windows, and gaming.
What Alphabet and Microsoft are
Alphabet is the parent company of Google. Its businesses include Google’s consumer and advertising products, Google Cloud, and a portfolio of smaller ventures. Microsoft is an independent company with businesses spanning productivity software, cloud services, Windows, gaming, and other products.
Both companies sell to consumers, developers, and organizations. The most useful comparison is therefore by business and customer need—not by treating their reporting segments as equivalents.
How their businesses are organized
Alphabet: Google Services, Google Cloud, and Other Bets
Alphabet reports three broad categories: Google Services, Google Cloud, and Other Bets. Google Services includes Search, YouTube, Android, Chrome, Maps, Play, and Pixel devices. Its revenue comes primarily from advertising, subscriptions, apps and in-app purchases, and devices. Google Cloud earns primarily from consumption-based fees and subscriptions for Google Cloud Platform, Workspace, and other enterprise services. Other Bets includes smaller operating businesses such as Waymo, Verily, GFiber, and GV. Alphabet’s investor FAQ describes these categories and notes that its information is as of September 30, 2025.

Microsoft: three reportable segments
Microsoft reports Productivity and Business Processes, Intelligent Cloud, and More Personal Computing. Productivity and Business Processes includes Microsoft 365 and LinkedIn. Intelligent Cloud includes Azure and other cloud services, as well as server products. More Personal Computing includes businesses such as Windows and gaming, along with search advertising. Microsoft’s annual report describes its reporting structure and product categories in more detail: Microsoft 2025 Annual Report.
The labels do not map one-to-one. Google Cloud encompasses infrastructure, platforms, applications, and enterprise services; Microsoft reports Azure and other cloud revenue principally in Intelligent Cloud, while Microsoft 365 cloud products sit in Productivity and Business Processes.

What the reported revenue figures say—and do not say
Alphabet reported $403 billion in consolidated revenue for calendar 2025, up 15% from the previous year. In the fourth quarter of 2025, Google Services generated $95.5 billion and Google Cloud generated $17.7 billion. These are company-reported figures in Alphabet’s 2025 results.
Microsoft reported $281.724 billion in revenue for fiscal 2025, which ended June 30, 2025, according to its annual report. Alphabet’s 2025 reporting year was the calendar year. These totals therefore cover different periods and should not be read as a same-period comparison or as evidence, by themselves, that one company is larger on a directly comparable basis.

For a fairer business comparison, look at the relevant product scope, growth, and profitability within each company’s reporting framework. A segment’s size also reflects what the company groups into it, so comparing “Google Cloud” directly with “Intelligent Cloud” would be misleading.
How Google Cloud and Azure compare
Google Cloud and Azure both serve organizations that need cloud infrastructure and related services, but their published segment boundaries differ. Google Cloud includes infrastructure, platforms, applications, and enterprise services such as Workspace. Microsoft places Azure and other cloud services in Intelligent Cloud, while Microsoft 365 cloud products are reported separately in Productivity and Business Processes.

Microsoft describes Azure as “a comprehensive set of cloud services that offer developers, IT professionals, and enterprises freedom to build, deploy, and manage applications on any platform or device” in its 2025 Annual Report. This describes Microsoft’s positioning; it is not an independent assessment of product quality or a claim that the two providers are interchangeable for every workload.
When evaluating the services for a real project, compare the specific capabilities and workload requirements, expected consumption, integration needs, and operating costs. Company-level segment results alone do not establish which provider is a better fit for a particular organization.

Where their productivity and AI businesses overlap
Both companies offer productivity and collaboration products, but their portfolios and reporting differ. Google Workspace is included within Google Cloud’s enterprise services, while Microsoft 365 is reported in Productivity and Business Processes. LinkedIn is also in Microsoft’s productivity segment, which makes that segment broader than an office-software category alone.
Cloud and AI are areas of direct strategic overlap, but they involve substantial infrastructure needs and competition from multiple kinds of providers. Microsoft says Azure competes with cloud providers and open-source offerings, and that its AI products face competition from hyperscalers, emerging competitors, and open-source offerings. These are the competitive risks Microsoft identifies in its 2025 Annual Report; they are not a neutral ranking of competitors.

- For productivity software: Compare Microsoft 365 with Google Workspace by the features and working practices that matter to your organization. Their parent companies’ segment totals are not a product-quality measure.
- For financial comparison: Align reporting periods and segment definitions first. Alphabet’s calendar 2025 figures and Microsoft’s fiscal 2025 figures do not cover the same year.
