Planet Zoo 2 has six named Wildlife Reserves in its launch-edition Zoopedia. As checked on 19 October 2026, 58 of the 136 animals in the Zoopedia list at least one reserve. Another 46 species have release-group options but no named reserve, while 32 entries show no release information. Wildlife Reserve release is therefore selective: an animal must have an eligible reserve, a permitted release group, the required welfare and genetic profile, and an established ecosystem to receive it.

The game launched on 13 October 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Frontier Developments describes the reserve system as conservation beyond the zoo, with released animals helping restore natural habitats and reserve research feeding benefits back into zoo management.

What are Wildlife Reserves in Planet Zoo 2?

Wildlife Reserves are large restoration areas that you populate with eligible animals raised in your zoos. Instead of placing an animal in another exhibit, you create a release group, prepare a suitable ecosystem in a reserve and release the group into that habitat. Reserve work also generates Conservation Credits and raises species-research levels used by your zoo.

Reserve eligibility appears in each animal’s Conservation entry. A species can have one or several permitted release-group types, and its entry may name one reserve, several reserves or none at all.

How do I release an animal into a Wildlife Reserve?

Use this order so you do not prepare a reserve for an animal that cannot enter it.

  1. Research the species with your zoo vets. Research can unlock additional release-group options.
  2. Accept conservation projects and meet their stated requirements.
  3. Move candidate animals into Animal Storage.
  4. Create a release group and choose one of the permitted group types.
  5. Add animals that meet the displayed conditions. Depending on the species, the checks can include longevity, fertility and genetic diversity.
  6. Finalise the group. The guide states that finalising cannot be undone; the animals then enter acclimatisation.
  7. Choose Release to Wildlife Reserve rather than Quick Release if you want the animals in a named reserve. Quick Release awards Conservation Credits instead.
  8. In the target reserve, place a Research Outpost.
  9. Paint an ecosystem and satisfy its area, terrain, nature and any water, highland or lowland requirements until its status becomes Established.
  10. Remove environmental pollution.
  11. Remove invasive flora that is not native to that reserve.
  12. Release the completed group into the established ecosystem.
  13. Fill the ecosystem roles required by that group. Some release groups require a Flourishing ecosystem rather than merely an established one.
  14. Build the reserve’s Research Network with Observation Platforms, Acoustic Monitors and Camera Traps.
  15. Drive the Research Vehicle or walk through the reserve and photograph animal behaviour without disturbing the animals.

How do ecosystems, biodiversity and research affect releases?

New ecosystems begin as Invalid. They become Established only after their area, terrain, vegetation and special geographic requirements are met. Ecosystem roles represent functions such as rooting, browsing and hunting; filling every required role can raise an ecosystem to Flourishing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Biodiversity Rating combines an Ecosystem Rating and a Research Rating. Established and Flourishing ecosystems, varied species and clean native vegetation improve the ecosystem side. Pollution and invasive flora reduce it. Observation Platforms, Acoustic Monitors and Camera Traps improve the research side.

The Research Outpost is the base for the Research Vehicle. Reserve research earns Conservation Credits and increases species-research levels, creating a direct connection between conservation work and the normal zoo campaign.

Which aquatic and flying animals can enter a reserve?

Six aquatic species currently list a reserve: African Tigerfish, Blunthead Cichlid, Brown Trout, Clown Loach, Common Rudd and Giant Gourami.

Ten aviary birds list a reserve: Eurasian Bittern, Golden Eagle, Great Hornbill, Greater Flamingo, Long-Eared Owl, Long-Tailed Parakeet, Secretarybird, Shoebill, White-Backed Vulture and White-Tailed Sea-Eagle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Many reef and open-ocean species—including sharks, rays, Hawksbill Turtle and West Indian Manatee—have release-group entries but no reserve assignment in the checked Zoopedia data. A release group alone therefore does not guarantee access to a Wildlife Reserve.

What should you check before breeding for release?

  • Confirm that the animal’s Conservation entry names the reserve you intend to use.
  • Check every permitted release-group type before pairing or separating animals.
  • Review longevity, fertility and genetic-diversity thresholds shown in the group screen.
  • Prepare the reserve ecosystem, pollution level, native vegetation and Research Network before finalising a group.
  • Read the on-screen ecosystem-role requirement: an Established habitat may not satisfy a group that requires Flourishing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one species be eligible for more than one Wildlife Reserve?

Yes. Reserve lists overlap, which is why animals such as Brown Trout, Grey Wolf and Golden Eagle appear in multiple northern reserves. Check the individual Conservation entry to see the destinations available for that species in your edition.

Why do the release-group totals not add up to the number of releasable species?

The category counts are overlapping species counts. A single species can list several social arrangements, such as a Mixed Group and a Solitary Male option, so adding the rows would count that species more than once.

Should I build the ecosystem or research the animal first?

Research the species and verify its reserve assignment first. That prevents you from investing in an ecosystem for an animal whose current entry offers only Quick Release or a release group with no named reserve.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens if an ecosystem is still marked Invalid?

The group cannot use it for reserve release until its required area, terrain, nature and geographic conditions are satisfied. Check the ecosystem’s missing requirements, then remove pollution or invasive plants before trying again.
