There is no practical single list of every Nokia phone ever sold: Nokia reused model numbers, released regional variants, and sold some devices under Mobira or operator-specific names. The clearest way to follow the range is by release era and product family.

This timeline covers the major Nokia, Microsoft Mobile Nokia, and HMD Global Nokia phones. It also separates original models from later revivals such as the 2017 Nokia 3310 and 2024 Nokia 3210 4G.

Nokia phones in chronological order

1982–1991: Mobira and the first handheld phones

Year Phone What made it notable
1982 Mobira Senator An early NMT-450 car phone; not a handheld handset.
1984 Mobira Talkman A substantially more portable cellular phone.
1987 Mobira Cityman 900 Nokia’s first widely recognized handheld mobile phone.
1989–1991 Cityman variants Regional and network-specific models including the Cityman 100, 150, 190, 300, 400 and 900.

The Mobira Senator is sometimes incorrectly described as Nokia’s first mobile phone. It was an important early Nokia/Mobira car phone, but the Cityman 900 is the model generally associated with Nokia’s first handheld mobile phone.

1992–1995: GSM arrives

Year Major model Significance
1992 Nokia 1011 Nokia’s first mass-produced GSM phone. It was also sold as the Mobira Cityman 2000 in some markets.
1994 Nokia 2010 An early, more affordable compact GSM phone.
1994 Nokia 2110 A major business and international GSM model.
1995 Nokia 8110 A curved slider later made famous by The Matrix.
1995 Nokia 6110 An early mainstream phone in Nokia’s numbered product strategy.

The Nokia 1011 launched on November 10, 1992, which explains the model number. It could receive SMS messages but could not send them.

  • Nokia 3110 (1997): a popular mainstream GSM phone.

The 9000 Communicator was an early smartphone-like GSM device, but it was not the first smartphone in history; IBM’s Simon came earlier. Its importance was Nokia’s combination of telephony and computer-style business functions in a commercially available Communicator.

2000–2004: The classic Nokia era

Year Major phones
2000 Nokia 3310, Nokia 6210, Nokia 9210 Communicator

The Nokia 3310 improved on the 3210 with features such as mobile chat and became one of the brand’s defining phones. The Nokia 7650, meanwhile, was Nokia’s first integrated-camera phone and its first Symbian Series 60 smartphone. The Nokia 1100 brought Nokia’s straightforward design to the low-cost mass market and became one of the world’s best-selling mobile phones.

2005–2009: Nseries, Eseries and feature-phone expansion

Nseries multimedia phones

Nokia X Android phones

In 2014, Nokia released the Android-based Nokia X, X+, XL and X2. They used a heavily customized Android experience and were launched around the period when Microsoft acquired Nokia’s Devices and Services business.

2014–2016: Microsoft Mobile’s Nokia phones

Microsoft completed its acquisition of Nokia’s Devices and Services business on April 25, 2014. It continued producing Nokia-branded feature phones and Lumia smartphones for a time.

  • Feature phones: Nokia 105, 130, 150, 215, 222 and 230.
  • Affordable smartphones: Lumia 535, 550, 640 and 640 XL.
  • Later flagships: Lumia 650, 950 and 950 XL.
  • Large-screen model: Lumia 1520, which continued in selected markets.

The Lumia 950 and 950 XL were among the last major Nokia-branded Windows Phone flagships. Microsoft later withdrew from developing its own Nokia-branded smartphone platform.

2017–2020: HMD Global brings back Nokia phones

HMD Global became the Nokia-brand licensee for mobile phones and tablets in 2016 and began launching new Nokia phones in 2017. These devices were made under HMD’s business, not by Nokia Corporation itself.

Who made Nokia phones?

Period Company responsible for phone business
1982–2014 Nokia Corporation and its Mobira-era operations.
2014–2016 Microsoft Mobile, after Microsoft acquired Nokia’s Devices and Services business.
2017 onward HMD Global, using the Nokia brand under license.

Nokia Corporation retained ownership of the Nokia trademark. HMD Global’s Nokia phones therefore belong to a different handset business from the original Nokia phone operation, even though they carry the same brand.

How to identify a Nokia phone correctly

  1. Check the exact model name. “Nokia 105” is not enough because several generations exist.
  2. Add the release year or edition. Use labels such as “Nokia 105 (2024)” or “Nokia 215 4G (2024).”
  3. Check the network version. A 2G Nokia 105 and a Nokia 105 4G can have different hardware, software and network compatibility.
  4. Check the region. Dual-SIM versions, carrier editions and different model numbers can vary by country.
  5. Check the manufacturer and operating system. An original Symbian Nokia, a Microsoft Lumia and an HMD Android Nokia are not interchangeable products.

Which Nokia phone was the first smartphone?

The Nokia 9000 Communicator, released in 1996, was Nokia’s first Communicator and an early smartphone-like GSM device. It should not be called the first smartphone overall because IBM Simon came earlier.

Is the modern Nokia 3310 the original 3310?

No. The original Nokia 3310 launched in 2000. HMD Global released a redesigned Nokia 3310 revival in 2017, with later 3G and 4G versions.

The Bottom Line

Nokia’s phone history runs from the Mobira Senator and Cityman through GSM classics such as the 3210, 3310 and 1100, then to Communicators, Nseries, Eseries, Lumia Windows Phones and HMD’s Android and feature phones. Because Nokia reused names and sold regional variants, the year, network generation and edition are essential when identifying any specific handset.
