Generative AI is already used in game-industry work, but available survey evidence does not show how many game-art jobs, if any, it has eliminated. The concern is still real: visual and technical artists report unusually negative views of AI, while the industry faces layoffs and students worry about entering it. Those signals matter—but they are not proof that AI caused the layoffs or a reliable forecast of what will happen to artists.
How is AI affecting jobs in game art?
The clearest current picture comes from the Game Developers Conference’s (GDC) 2026 State of the Game Industry survey, which gathered responses from more than 2,300 game-industry professionals. It shows that generative AI has entered workplace workflows, but that broad use is not the same as replacing artists.
In the 2026 survey, 36% of game-industry professionals said they used generative AI at work. Among those who used it, 19% reported using it for asset generation. The denominator matters: 19% is a share of AI adopters, not a share of all game-industry workers, artists, or art jobs. The survey does not say how many assets were produced, whether they shipped in games, or whether their production displaced paid work.

Other reported uses were more common than asset generation. Among AI adopters, 81% said they used tools for research or brainstorming, 47% for daily tasks, and 47% for code assistance. Respondents could report multiple uses, so these figures do not add up to a single division of workers into exclusive categories.

Adoption also varied by workplace. GDC reported that 30% of game-studio respondents used AI tools, compared with 58% of respondents at publishing companies, support teams, and marketing or public-relations firms. These groups do different work; the higher figure outside studios should not be read as evidence that art departments have adopted AI at the same rate.
Why are visual and technical artists especially concerned?
In GDC’s 2026 survey, 64% of respondents in the visual and technical arts category viewed AI’s impact on the industry unfavorably. That is higher than the 52% of respondents overall who viewed its impact negatively. The category includes a group of roles; the result is not a separate estimate for every kind of game artist.
The contrast between use and sentiment is important. Some people use AI for support tasks while viewing its broader effects negatively; an adoption figure alone cannot tell you whether workers welcome a tool, feel pressured to use it, or believe it threatens their work. The survey also records concerns about data sourcing, energy consumption, and possible job replacement.

GDC’s full 2026 report includes a comment from an unnamed senior employee in visual and technical arts in Germany:
“We are not allowed to [use AI tools]. I’m not privy to the reasons behind that decision. However, I’m with my employer on this.”
This is one respondent’s account, not a named expert’s assessment or a statement of policy across the industry. It does illustrate that AI use can be shaped by studio decisions as well as by individual preference.

Has negative sentiment about AI grown?
Across GDC’s annual surveys, the share of respondents who viewed AI’s industry impact negatively rose from 18% in 2024 to 30% in 2025 and 52% in 2026. The 2025 report and 2024 report provide earlier-year context.

These are separate annual survey snapshots, not a panel following the same people. The change shows that negative views were more common among respondents in later editions; it does not establish why opinions changed or predict what any individual artist will think or experience. Ethical concerns were already widespread in 2024: GDC reported that four in five developers had ethical concerns about generative AI.
Are game-art jobs at risk amid layoffs?
Game workers are facing a difficult employment climate, but the GDC figures do not attribute layoffs to AI. In its 2026 survey, 28% of respondents said they had been laid off in the previous two years, and 50% said their current or most recent employer had conducted layoffs in the previous year. These are industry-wide measures, not counts of game artists displaced by AI.

The distinction matters because layoffs can have multiple causes, and a survey that records layoffs alongside AI adoption cannot establish that one caused the other. GDC’s figures establish that layoffs and concern about AI coexist; they do not isolate AI’s role in job cuts.

In a smaller student survey included in GDC’s 2026 release, 74% of surveyed students said they were concerned about future game-industry job prospects. GDC describes worries about limited entry-level openings, competition from experienced workers who have been laid off, and AI-driven displacement.

Will AI replace game artists?
The available GDC evidence cannot answer that with a yes or no. It documents reported workplace use and opinions, not a causal count of artist jobs replaced. Nor does it provide a long-term, occupation-specific estimate of hiring, job losses, or how game-art work will change.
For a clearer answer, the missing evidence would need to distinguish art occupations from the industry overall and track employment outcomes over time—for example, whether particular roles see fewer openings, changing task requirements, or reductions attributable to AI rather than other business pressures. Until then, the defensible conclusion is narrower: generative AI is being used in game-industry work, many visual and technical artists view its impact negatively, and the scale of any AI-driven displacement of game artists is not established.
