Short answer: An Airbnb cleaning fee is a host-set, one-time charge intended to cover ordinary housekeeping after checkout. It is part of the booking total, not a nightly rate, and it does not guarantee a particular cleaning crew or service level. To decide whether a listing is good value, compare the complete price for identical dates and guests, divide the flat fee across the nights, read the checkout instructions and cleanliness reviews, and check the cancellation terms before paying. A large fee is not automatically improper, but a high total combined with extensive chores, unclear answers or repeated cleanliness complaints is a sensible reason to choose another stay.
This guide reflects Airbnb policies and pricing information available on October 30, 2026. Tax display, cancellation rights and local rules can vary by location and booking date.
What is an Airbnb cleaning fee?
Airbnb defines the cleaning fee as a host-set, one-off charge for cleaning a home after a guest leaves. It is normally a flat amount per reservation rather than a charge for each night, and it forms part of the stay price. Airbnb’s host guidance says, “Your cleaning fee typically pays for the housekeeping you expect to do after hosting guests.” (Airbnb Help; Airbnb host guidance)
The listing may show a separate cleaning-fee line, or the host may build cleaning costs into the nightly price. A listing without an itemized fee is therefore not necessarily cleaned for free. The amount and whether a separate fee exists vary by property, host and stay length; Airbnb does not publish a verified average dollar amount that can be used as a benchmark.

Keep this charge separate from Airbnb service fees, taxes, pet fees, extra-guest fees and other listed costs. Airbnb has described an October 2026 transition to a single host-paid service fee for certain hosts, so no universal guest service-fee percentage applies to every reservation. Use the price breakdown for the specific booking instead.
What does the fee actually cover?
It generally contributes to the ordinary turnover work needed after checkout: cleaning products, laundry services and housekeeping. Airbnb’s March 31, 2026 host guidance discusses buying supplies, laundry and professional housekeeping when hosts set a fee, and advises treating the fee as a way to account for those operating costs rather than as extra profit. That is pricing guidance, not proof of how a particular host spends the money.
What it does not promise
- A particular cleaner, cleaning company or inspection standard.
- A fixed checklist of tasks completed to a guaranteed level.
- That unusual stains, smoke odors or damage will be handled as part of ordinary turnover; Airbnb discusses those unexpected problems separately.
- That the fee will be lower for a small apartment or higher for a large home. Property size is useful context for your judgment, not an Airbnb formula.
Hosts can choose a standard fee or set a lower amount for one- or two-night reservations. Those are listing settings, not evidence of a market-wide average or a platform-approved “fair” price.
How do I see the real price before booking?
Compare the fee-inclusive total for the same dates and guest count, then open the detailed breakdown before you pay. A nightly headline price can hide the effect of a flat fee on a short stay.
- Enter the exact check-in and checkout dates.
- Set the correct number of guests, including children or infants where the listing treats them separately.
- Open the total-price or price-breakdown view and record the nightly subtotal, cleaning fee, service charges, taxes and any other listed fees.
- Review the final amount on the payment screen, not only the search-card nightly figure.
- Repeat the process for competing listings so every option is compared on identical dates and occupancy.
Airbnb announced fee-inclusive search-result totals worldwide on April 21, 2025. For guests in the United States, Airbnb says the displayed total is fee-inclusive before taxes, with the breakdown available during checkout; taxes may not be separately displayed before booking where Airbnb does not collect them. In some countries or regions, tax-inclusive totals are shown before checkout. The applicable tax treatment depends on the location, so confirm the amount you will actually pay. How much does a cleaning fee add to a short stay?
Because the charge is usually flat per reservation, its effective nightly contribution is higher on a one- or two-night booking than on a week-long stay. Divide the cleaning fee by the number of nights, then add that result to the advertised nightly rate. This simple calculation does not determine whether a fee is fair; it reveals the cost you are actually comparing.
| Comparison | What to calculate or read | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Same dates and guests | Fee-inclusive total for each listing | Prevents a low headline rate from disguising a higher booking total. |
| Short versus long stay | Cleaning fee divided by nights | Shows how strongly the flat charge affects a weekend or other short trip. |
| Property context | Home size, bedrooms and expected turnover | Provides context without claiming Airbnb has a permitted fee formula. |
| Checkout burden | Every requested task and its wording | Helps you spot an extensive chore list before committing. |
| Cleanliness history | Recent reviews and recurring complaints | Repeated reports can signal risk that the fee amount alone cannot show. |
| Cancellation exposure | Policy attached to this reservation and booking date | Determines what may be refundable if plans change. |
When should I avoid a listing with a cleaning fee?
Skip or question a listing when the complete price is poor value for your dates, the requested checkout work is unusually burdensome or unexplained, or reviews repeatedly describe poor cleanliness. These are practical decision signals, not proof that a fee violates a law or that a refund is automatic.
A large effective fee on a short stay
A flat charge can dominate the cost of a weekend. Compare the total with nearby alternatives of similar size and location rather than comparing nightly rates alone. Airbnb says hosts should consider how a high cleaning fee may deter bookings and that search ranking considers total price alongside listing quality; this is not an Airbnb-declared maximum or an independently verified average. (Airbnb host guidance)
An extensive or unclear chore list
Read every checkout instruction before booking. If a host expects multiple cleaning jobs, ask which tasks are genuinely required and whether they are already reflected in the listing. Airbnb’s current additional-fees guidance states: “Hosts should not impose fees, charges, or penalties for failing to perform specific cleaning or checkout tasks.” (Airbnb additional-fees help)
That rule does not mean every request disappears or that a guest can ignore safety instructions. It means a host should not add a fee or penalty simply because a guest did not perform a specified cleaning or checkout task.

Repeated cleanliness complaints
Look for patterns across recent reviews rather than relying on one unusually positive or negative comment. Recurring reports of dirty bathrooms, unwashed linens, odors or delayed responses deserve more weight when paired with a substantial fee. Airbnb says cleanliness affects reviews, but a review pattern is a reason to assess risk, not a guaranteed basis for reimbursement.

Unanswered questions before booking
Send a concise message asking what the cleaning fee covers, which checkout tasks are expected and whether the listed total includes all known taxes and charges for your location. A host who cannot give a clear answer leaves you with less information to evaluate the reservation; choosing another listing may be safer than resolving the ambiguity after arrival.
Are checkout chores changing in November 2026?
Airbnb has already published a prohibition on fees, charges and penalties for failing specified cleaning or checkout tasks. Separately, the Associated Press reported on October 22, 2026 that Airbnb’s new limits on required checkout chores are scheduled to start November 20, 2026, after the date of this article’s information. (Associated Press report)
As of October 30, 2026, treat that change as announced but not yet effective. The report gave washing dishes, stripping beds and taking out trash as examples generally outside the forthcoming requirements, while noting that narrower, reasonable requests and circumstances such as animal-proof trash storage may still matter. Recheck Airbnb’s final policy if you book or stay on or after November 20, because the applicable wording may differ from the announcement.
Can a host add a cleaning fee after I book?
A host seeking to increase the price of a confirmed reservation must use Airbnb’s formal trip-change process. Airbnb says the request should show the revised total and that the guest must accept the updated price. A message asking for money is not the same as an accepted trip change. When is a cleaning fee refundable?
Refund rights depend on when the reservation was booked, when you cancel and which cancellation policy applies. Airbnb says an applicable free-cancellation period returns the full cleaning fee. For reservations booked on or after April 21, 2025, cancellation outside that period is governed by the host’s cancellation policy. Reservations booked before April 21, 2025 have a separate rule under which the full cleaning fee is refundable before check-in. After a completed trip, Airbnb says the cleaning fee is not returned. (Airbnb cleaning-fee and cancellation help)
The April 21, 2025 cutoff is the booking date, not simply the date you cancel. A disappointing cleanliness experience does not, by itself, establish an automatic cleaning-fee refund in the reviewed policy guidance. If the home is materially different from the listing or has a serious cleanliness problem, document it promptly with dated photos and messages and use Airbnb’s support process; any remedy depends on the facts and applicable policy.
What does fee transparency law mean for guests?
The Federal Trade Commission’s short-term-lodging fee rule treats mandatory charges, including cleaning fees, as a price-transparency issue. Its analysis does not set a maximum cleaning-fee amount when fees are properly disclosed and not misleading. The FTC-hosted document reviewed for this article is marked as a prepublication copy; the Federal Register version is the official publication. It should not be read as a nationwide cap, a guaranteed refund rule or a verified effective date. (FTC rule document)
For a guest, the practical takeaway is to preserve the listing, price breakdown and checkout instructions that applied when you booked. Local taxes, consumer-protection rules and disclosure requirements can add rights or obligations depending on the jurisdiction.

- Rank the options by final payable total for identical dates and guests.
- Calculate each cleaning fee’s per-night contribution.
- Check whether the property’s size and amenities justify a different overall price for your trip.
- Read the checkout instructions and identify tasks you are unwilling or unable to perform.
- Scan recent reviews for recurring cleanliness or odor complaints.
- Confirm the cancellation policy and booking date before choosing the cheaper-looking option.
- Save the final price breakdown and key instructions for your records.
This approach avoids two common errors: rejecting every listing with a cleaning fee, and assuming a low nightly rate is a bargain without seeing the total.
How to judge a cleaning fee without assuming it is unfair
There is no published universal “reasonable” dollar amount to apply to every Airbnb. A fee is more informative when considered alongside stay length, home size, local taxes, total price, checkout obligations and review history. Airbnb’s own guidance acknowledges that hosts may include supplies and professional housekeeping in their calculations, while also warning that high fees can discourage bookings. Those facts support comparison, not a one-number verdict.
Remember that payment of a cleaning fee does not transfer the host’s turnover job to you. Follow reasonable house and safety instructions, leave the property in ordinary condition, and question any demand for a separate penalty tied to a named cleaning task. If the economics or obligations do not suit your trip, selecting a different listing before booking is the simplest remedy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an Airbnb cleaning fee be charged per night?
Airbnb describes the cleaning fee as a one-time amount per booking, so hosts generally do not multiply it by every night. A host can instead incorporate cleaning costs into the nightly price, which is why the absence of a separate line does not prove there is no cleaning cost.
What should I save in case the price changes later?
Save the confirmation email, the final price-breakdown screen and screenshots of the checkout instructions shown before payment. Those records identify the terms you accepted and make it easier to explain a discrepancy through the reservation’s support channel.
Does paying a cleaning fee mean I can leave dishes and trash everywhere?
No. The fee is for expected turnover housekeeping, not permission to damage a home or ignore reasonable safety directions. It does mean a host should not add a fee or penalty merely because you failed a specific cleaning or checkout task.
Is a listing with no separate cleaning fee always cheaper?
Not necessarily. Hosts may fold cleaning costs into the nightly rate, and taxes or other charges can change the final total. Compare the complete amount for the same dates and occupancy rather than the presence or absence of one line item.
