The biggest gains come from changing settings in the right order: choose the delivery aspect ratio first, test motion with the cheapest suitable model, generate only as many seconds as the action needs, and postpone high resolution, upscaling, and frame-rate processing until you have selected a take. In Runway, for example, Gen-4 Turbo costs 5 credits per second versus 12 credits per second for Gen-4, so testing in Turbo can cut exploration costs substantially. Fixed seeds, short draft clips, and the pre-generation cost estimate help you refine a promising idea without paying repeatedly for avoidable changes.
Which AI video settings matter most for quality and cost?
Change settings in this order: destination format, duration, draft model, seed or reference controls, resolution, and finishing processes. This order prevents a common waste pattern: rendering a long, high-resolution clip in the wrong orientation, then paying again to crop, regenerate, upscale, or smooth it.
- Format: Set the aspect ratio required by the final destination before generating.
- Action length: Use five seconds for a simple action and ten seconds only when the prompt contains several movements or a longer reveal.
- Model tier: Explore with a lower-cost or turbo model, then render finalists with the higher-quality model.
- Resolution: Draft at the lowest setting that lets you judge composition and motion; finish the selected take at delivery resolution.
- Repeatability: Lock the seed when you are making controlled variations of a successful clip.
- Finishing: Trim the final cut before upscaling or increasing frame rate.
There is no universal best preset. Available controls, billing units, duration limits, and model names vary by platform and can change, so the interface’s estimate immediately before generation is the authoritative cost for your account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow should I set up a cheap, reliable generation workflow?
Use a two-pass workflow: inexpensive exploration followed by selective finishing. Separate decisions about story and motion from decisions about pixels and delivery polish.

1. Define the delivery format
Write down where the finished clip will appear—landscape video, vertical short-form, square feed, or a cinematic banner—and select that ratio before you generate. Runway supports 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:3, 3:4, and 21:9. If the output resolution has a different shape from a supplied image, the image can be cropped. Starting in the final ratio protects framing and reduces corrective generations.
2. Describe one visual action per draft
Keep the first prompt focused on the subject, camera movement, and one primary action. A concise prompt makes it easier to identify whether a failure came from the idea, motion direction, subject consistency, or camera instruction. Add secondary movements only after the basic shot works.
3. Pick the low-cost model for exploration
Runway documents Gen-4 Turbo at 5 credits per second and Gen-4 at 12 credits per second. Its guidance is to test generations in Turbo, then switch to Gen-4 after the idea is proven. The lower-cost tier is for prompt and motion exploration; reserve the higher-cost tier for shortlisted takes rather than every experiment.

Runway offers five- and ten-second outputs. Its guidance says simple actions can work in five seconds, while prompts containing multiple movements benefit from ten seconds. Because duration directly changes spend, do not generate ten seconds when the usable action ends at four or five.
5. Lock a seed after you have a winner
A fixed seed is useful when you want controlled variations. Runway says a fixed seed creates generations with similar motion; Adobe says the same seed, prompt, and controls can produce similar clips. Keep the seed constant while changing one variable at a time, such as lens direction, subject position, or color. Treat it as a repeatability tool, not a quality switch: locking a seed does not repair a weak prompt or add detail.
6. Render and finish only the selected take
Once the motion and composition are acceptable, regenerate that concept with the higher-quality model or required resolution. Then cut unwanted frames before any upscale or frame-rate operation. This keeps finishing charges tied to the footage that will actually be delivered.
Should I use five seconds or ten seconds?
Choose five seconds for a single, readable action; choose ten seconds when the shot needs multiple movements, a transition, or time for a reveal. Longer output is not automatically better because every unused second can increase generation and finishing costs.

Five-second clips
- Best for a product turn, facial expression, short camera push, or one gesture.
- Cheaper for repeated prompt tests because the billed duration is shorter.
- Easier to trim and combine in an editor when a sequence is built from multiple shots.
Ten-second clips
- Useful when the subject must complete several movements or the camera must travel between two positions.
- Gives a gradual reveal or environmental change room to read naturally.
- Should be avoided when the action finishes early; extra seconds are still part of the generated asset and can raise later upscale or frame-rate costs.
If you need a twelve-second scene, consider two purposeful shots rather than generating a longer clip and discarding half of it. Separate shots also let you correct one action without replacing the other.
Which aspect ratio should I choose?
Set the ratio to match the final player or social placement, not the shape that happens to be easiest to generate. A ratio mismatch can crop an input image and can force a second generation if important subjects fall outside the safe area.
| Destination shape | Typical use | Runway ratio option | Framing implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| 16:9 | Landscape players, presentations, standard video | Supported | Allows wider camera movement; keep faces and products away from extreme edges. |
| 9:16 | Vertical short-form and mobile stories | Supported | Compose for a tall center column; horizontal scenes may crop important action. |
| 1:1 | Square feeds and profile grids | Supported | Central framing is safest when the same asset may be reused. |
| 4:3 | Classic display and some presentation layouts | Supported | Balances width and height with less lateral space than 16:9. |
| 3:4 | Portrait-oriented placements that are not full-screen vertical | Supported | Leave vertical headroom and check lower-frame cropping. |
| 21:9 | Ultra-wide banners and cinematic layouts | Supported | Subjects need deliberate horizontal placement; a portrait input is especially vulnerable to cropping. |
Other services expose model-specific ratio menus rather than one universal list. Adobe Firefly, for instance, presents aspect-ratio choices by model. Check the selected model’s menu instead of assuming that a ratio available in one model is available in another.
What resolution should I use for drafts and final delivery?
Use the lowest resolution that makes motion, composition, and subject consistency easy to judge, then render or upscale only the chosen take. Resolution cannot fix a bad action or framing, and paying for more pixels during exploration multiplies the cost of every discarded attempt.
Resolution menus are model-specific
Runway’s Gen-4 table lists 1280×720 for 16:9 and 720×1280 for 9:16. Adobe Firefly documentation lists Ray3.14 and Ray3.14 HDR at 720p, 1080p, and 4K, while Veo 3.1 is listed at 720p or 1080p. These menus are not interchangeable specifications; select from the options shown for the exact model and mode you are using.
A practical resolution ladder
- Draft: Choose the lowest available resolution that reveals motion artifacts and composition errors.
- Selection: Compare takes at the same ratio and duration so resolution does not obscure which motion is best.
- Final render: Re-render the selected prompt at the delivery resolution when the model supports it.
- Upscale: Use an upscaler only after trimming and only when the final source does not already meet the required dimensions.
Do not change aspect ratio and resolution at the same time during a refinement pass. Changing both makes it difficult to tell whether a crop or a quality change caused a new defect.

How do model tiers and credit billing affect the real cost?
Credit prices must be read together with the billing unit. A model billed per second behaves differently from an API feature billed per frame or an app that charges per generation.
| Operation or platform detail | Published figure or behavior | What it means for your workflow |
|---|---|---|
| Runway Gen-4 Turbo | 5 credits per second | Use for rapid prompt and motion exploration. |
| Runway Gen-4 | 12 credits per second | Reserve for the shortlisted concept or final-quality render. |
| Luma video upscale | Approximately 10 credits per second at 1080p; approximately 17 credits per second at 4K | Trim first; 4K finishing is substantially more expensive per second. |
| Luma upscale duration | Up to 120 seconds per upscale job | A long source may fit technically, but unused footage still increases cost. |
| Runway Upscale Video app | Clips longer than 40 seconds must be split | Split at an intentional edit point, not in the middle of a movement. |
| Runway API video upscaling | Billed by output frame | Higher frame counts and longer clips increase spend. |
| Runway API frame-rate enhancement | Billed by input seconds | Do not process discarded duration or raise frame rate before the cut is locked. |
The figures above are platform-specific and may change with model, plan, region, or date. Pika states that its model, duration, resolution, and other options affect credit cost and that the estimated cost appears before generation. Check that estimate after every setting change; it is more reliable than a general price chart.
When should I upscale or increase the frame rate?
Upscale and frame-rate enhancement are finishing operations, not ways to rescue an unresolved shot. First select the take, remove unwanted frames, and confirm that the edit does not need a different crop.
Trim before upscaling
Luma explicitly recommends trimming to the actual delivery cut because cost increases with duration. Its video upscaler supports up to 120 seconds per job and reports approximately 10 credits per second at 1080p and 17 credits per second at 4K. A 20-second final cut therefore avoids paying to upscale discarded material, regardless of whether the original generation was longer.
Respect app and API limits
Runway’s Upscale Video app requires clips longer than 40 seconds to be split. Split at a clean shot boundary, export each segment, and check for a visible seam before joining them. In the Runway API, video upscaling is charged by output frame and frame-rate enhancement by input seconds, so increasing resolution and frame rate together can compound the bill.
Choose frame rate for the delivery requirement
Do not add frames merely because a higher number sounds more professional. If the destination accepts the generated frame rate and motion is clean, leave it unchanged. Apply enhancement when a specific delivery specification requires it, and process only the trimmed final segment.

How can I use seeds and references without making clips look identical?
Keep a fixed seed while you are diagnosing a variation, then change the seed when you want genuinely different motion. A seed helps reproduce a similar starting behavior with the same prompt and controls, but it does not guarantee identical pixels or continuity across unrelated shots.
- For camera experiments: Keep the seed and prompt fixed; change only the camera instruction.
- For wardrobe or color tests: Keep the seed and camera wording fixed; change one appearance attribute.
- For new action ideas: Release the seed so the model can explore a different motion path.
- For a sequence: Use reference images or consistent descriptive details as well as a seed; a seed alone is not a character-identity system.
Adobe’s guidance similarly ties repeatability to using the same seed, prompt, and controls. Record those values with each selected take so a successful variation can be reproduced after other experiments.
What should I check before clicking Generate?
A 30-second preflight catches most avoidable credit losses.
- Is the aspect ratio the one required by the final destination?
- Does the input image already have that shape, or will the platform crop it?
- Does the action need five seconds, or does it genuinely require ten?
- Am I using the inexpensive exploration model while the idea is still uncertain?
- Is the resolution sufficient to judge motion without paying for final pixels?
- Should the seed be fixed for this controlled variation?
- What is the displayed credit estimate after choosing model, duration, resolution, and options?
- Will I trim the clip before any upscale or frame-rate enhancement?
- Does the service impose a duration limit or require splitting?
How do I troubleshoot a poor result without wasting another generation?
The subject is cropped or off-screen
Return to the delivery ratio and reframe the input image or prompt for that shape. Do not upscale first; more pixels will not restore content that was cropped at generation.

The motion is chaotic
Shorten the prompt to one primary action, reduce the duration to five seconds, and test in the lower-cost model. Once the movement is stable, add a secondary action or longer duration.
The shot looks soft
Check whether the draft resolution is simply low before assuming the model failed. If the composition and motion are good, render the selected take at the model’s higher available resolution or upscale the trimmed cut.

A variation changed too much
Reuse the same seed, prompt, and controls, then alter one setting. If the variation still needs a wholly different motion path, release the seed instead of repeatedly forcing the same one.
The final file costs more than expected
Review duration, resolution, model, and enhancement options in the estimate before the next run. Check whether an upscale was billed per second or frame and whether frame-rate processing covered unused footage.

What are efficient presets for common projects?
| Project need | Starting settings | Finishing path |
|---|---|---|
| Single product gesture | Five seconds, destination ratio, low draft resolution, turbo or lower-cost model | Lock the seed for camera or color variations; render one finalist at delivery resolution. |
| Multi-step reveal | Ten seconds, destination ratio, low draft resolution | Remove pauses, then upscale only the reveal segment that survives the edit. |
| Vertical social clip | 9:16 before generation; keep the subject inside the tall safe area | Check text and hands near the top and bottom edges before final rendering. |
| Wide cinematic banner | 21:9 before generation; avoid placing essential detail at the extreme sides | Use a higher-quality final render after motion is approved. |
| Existing footage that needs delivery resolution | Do not regenerate; trim the edit first | Use the appropriate upscale tier, observing the service’s duration and billing limits. |
How often do these settings and prices change?
Model names, resolution menus, plan entitlements, partner-model availability, and credit rates are volatile. Treat the current platform interface and its estimate as the source of truth immediately before purchase or rendering. A workflow built around ratios, duration discipline, staged quality, fixed seeds, and trim-first finishing remains useful even when a provider changes a model name or price.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change the aspect ratio after generating an AI video?
You can crop or reformat a finished clip in an editor, but that may remove important content and cannot recreate pixels outside the original frame. Generating in the destination ratio is safer when the shot depends on edge-to-edge composition or a supplied image.
Does a fixed seed make two AI video clips identical?
No. It encourages similar motion when the seed, prompt, and controls remain the same, but other settings and model behavior can still produce differences. Use it to run controlled comparisons, not as a guarantee of frame-for-frame continuity.
Is 4K always worth the extra upscale credits?
Only when the delivery system, viewing distance, or crop requires it. Luma reports approximately 17 credits per second for 4K upscaling versus approximately 10 credits per second for 1080p, so finish at 4K only after confirming that the extra detail has a practical use.
