To make AI-generated video shots feel continuous, combine a clear character or image reference with one simple camera instruction, one main subject action, and a repeatable seed when the model supports it. References carry appearance between generations; prompt structure makes movement understandable; seeds help you create related variations. None of these controls guarantees that every frame will preserve a face, costume, prop, or set exactly. Treat each shot as a controlled iteration, inspect it, and use explicit frame or extension tools when you need to continue an existing clip.
The workflow below applies across current hosted generators, but model names, interfaces, limits, and API availability change. Runway’s Gen-4 materials, Google’s Veo documentation, and OpenAI’s archived Sora guide describe capabilities rather than independently measured continuity rates.
What settings actually improve continuity in AI video?
Four controls matter most: a visual reference, a shot-specific prompt, a seed or other variation control, and a continuation method such as first/last-frame guidance or video extension. They solve different problems.

- References carry a subject’s visible traits, style, or location into a new generation where the model supports them.
- Prompt structure tells the model how the camera and subject should move without making it reconcile many competing actions.
- Seeds can keep variations related, but they are not documented identity locks.
- Frame and extension controls anchor a new segment to an existing frame or clip instead of asking the model to recreate continuity from text alone.
Official product pages describe these as available features or intended uses. They do not establish a cross-model percentage for face retention, camera adherence, or successful shot matching, so avoid calling any generator “the most consistent” without a controlled comparison.

How do I keep the same character in AI-generated videos?
Start each generation with the model’s character-reference or image-reference mode, then use a clean reference and repeat the same identity description. Runway’s Gen-4 references guidance recommends a high-quality subject image with even, natural lighting and documents up to three references in a generation. Google’s Veo 3.1 documentation also describes up to three reference images. These controls can improve repeatability, but they do not promise pixel-for-pixel replication.
1. Prepare a dependable reference
- Choose a sharp image in which the face, hair, clothing, and distinctive props are visible.
- Prefer even, natural lighting so shadows do not become mistaken for permanent facial or costume features.
- Keep the subject’s defining details consistent in your written description: age range, hairstyle, clothing colors, accessories, and any non-human traits.
- Use the same reference set for related shots unless the story intentionally changes the wardrobe or design.
2. Add references through the model’s supported control
Select the documented character-reference or image-reference option rather than pasting a picture into a normal text-only prompt. If the interface accepts several images, use them to show complementary views or the same subject in a relevant pose; do not assume that adding more images always improves the result.
3. Generate one shot at a time
Describe a single action and a single camera setup. If the face changes, simplify the action, improve the source image, or split the sequence into separate clips. That is a practical iteration strategy based on how reference and motion controls are documented, not a guaranteed repair.

Runway’s Gen-4 product page says, “Runway Gen-4 can utilize visual references, combined with instructions, to create new images and videos utilizing consistent styles, subjects, locations and more.” This is the company’s product description, not an independent success-rate measurement. Its separate Gen-4 help article is labeled as covering an older generation, so do not assume its interface or limits are identical to current Gen-4.5 workflows.
How should I write a prompt for a controllable AI video shot?
Put the shot information in a predictable order: framing, camera position or movement, subject action, composition or focus, and lighting or atmosphere. Google’s video prompting guidance highlights subject, action, camera position and motion, composition, focus, and ambiance. Runway recommends direct, simple, positive phrasing.

A reliable prompt pattern
[Framing and camera position]. [One camera movement]. [One main subject action]. [Focus, lighting, and atmosphere].For example:
Medium eye-level shot. Slow dolly in as the subject turns toward the window. Keep the face in focus; soft morning light, quiet interior.The first sentence establishes what the viewer sees. The second assigns a readable path to the camera. The third gives the subject one beat rather than a chain of actions. The final clause supplies visual priorities without burying the movement in adjectives.
Why one main action works better
“Walks across the room, picks up a book, waves, sits down, and looks outside” asks the model to stage several transitions while preserving identity and geometry. Break it into shots or simplify it to “walks to the window and turns toward it.” Generate the next beat only after checking the first.

Use positive language such as “locked camera,” “tripod-stable shot,” or “fixed eye-level framing.” Runway’s prompting guidance warns that negative phrasing can produce unpredictable or opposite results, so “no camera movement” is less dependable than stating the desired locked setup directly.
How do I control camera movement without losing the subject?
State one camera movement, its direction or speed, and the framing that should remain readable. Separate that instruction from the subject’s action so the generator does not confuse a camera move with a character move.
Useful camera instructions
- Push-in or dolly in: “Slow dolly in from a medium shot to a close-up.”
- Pull-out: “Slowly dolly out, revealing the full room.”
- Pan: “Gentle pan right while keeping the subject near the center of frame.”
- Tracking: “Side-tracking shot follows the subject walking left to right.”
- Static: “Locked camera, fixed eye-level framing.”
Add only the movement you need. Combining a rapid orbit, zoom, crane, and subject spin in one short prompt gives the model several incompatible paths and makes continuity harder to diagnose.

Image-to-video is different from text-to-video
An input image already establishes composition, color, subject placement, and style. In image-to-video prompting, use the text primarily for what changes: camera motion, subject animation, or an environmental event. Google Cloud’s best-practice guidance explicitly recommends this division. Re-describing a different scene in the text can conflict with the source image and invite unwanted layout changes.
How can I make separate shots look like one continuous scene?
Plan every shot as a distinct unit, record the settings that produced it, and use an explicit continuation feature when the product offers one. Continuity is easier to maintain when each clip has a known incoming and outgoing state.

- Write the intended framing and camera position.
- Choose one principal subject action.
- Specify lighting, focus, and any movement in the environment.
- Attach the same approved character or location references.
- Generate and inspect the clip before designing the next beat.
Inspect the cut points
Compare the end of one clip with the start of the next for face shape, hair, clothing, props, room geometry, screen direction, and camera height. If a detail drifts, adjust the reference or simplify the action before adding more complexity. Generating a troublesome beat as its own short clip is often easier than asking one long generation to perform several transitions.
Use first and last frames when available
Google’s Veo documentation describes first/last-frame direction, reference images, and video extension. These controls let you specify the visual state that a segment should begin or end with, which is more explicit than hoping a text prompt recreates the previous frame. Availability depends on the exact model and product surface.
Extensions and conversational editing
Google’s Gemini Omni Flash documentation describes conversational editing and video extension. As of October 25, 2026, the Gemini API’s Veo 3.1 Preview endpoints had shut down on October 22, 2026; the API documentation directs users toward Gemini Omni Flash or generally available models on the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform. Confirm the endpoint and model currently enabled in your account before writing automation or interface instructions.

Does a fixed seed keep the same character?
No. A fixed seed is a variation-control aid, not a documented identity lock. Runway says reusing a fixed seed can produce generations with similar motion; that does not establish that the same face, clothing, or props will persist across a changed prompt, reference, model version, or scene.
Use a seed after you have chosen the reference and shot design. Keep the prompt, references, model version, and other settings unchanged while you compare variations. If you change the action or camera substantially, expect the seed to provide only limited continuity.
What do Runway, Veo, and Sora document for continuity?
The tools differ in the controls they document and in how current their instructions are. The table separates feature claims from evidence about performance.

Face or hairstyle changes
- Replace the reference with a sharper, evenly lit image.
- Reduce the number of simultaneous actions.
- Keep the identity description literal and consistent.
- Try a separate clip for the difficult pose or turn.
Clothing or prop changes
- Show the garment or prop clearly in the reference.
- Describe its color and position once, without adding contradictory wardrobe instructions.
- Check whether a new camera angle hides the detail the model was using as a cue.
Camera path or framing changes
- Replace multiple movements with one explicit move.
- State the starting framing and the subject’s screen position.
- For image-to-video, remove scene-redesign language and describe only the intended motion.
- Use first/last-frame or extension controls when the model provides them.
Scene geometry or lighting changes
Use a location reference where supported and keep the lighting clause stable. If the environment still changes, make the shot shorter or treat the transition as a deliberate cut rather than forcing a continuous camera move.
How should I compare generators for a continuity project?
Compare documented controls and your own repeatable test set, not marketing language. For each candidate, check:
- Whether persistent character or image references are accepted, and how many can be attached to one generation.
- Whether camera movement is controlled only through text or also through structured controls.
- Whether first/last frames, video extension, keyframes, or iterative editing are available.
- Whether the instructions apply to the current model, interface, region, and API endpoint.
- Which statements are documented features and which are qualitative vendor claims.
Run the same small set of shots—a locked portrait, a walking track, a turn toward camera, and a continuation from a known frame—then record visible changes. Do not convert that informal comparison into a universal percentage or ranking.
What is the most reliable production workflow?
- Choose the current model and verify its documentation. Note the model name, interface, region, and endpoint date.
- Create and approve references. Use clear, evenly lit subject images and a location image if supported.
- Write a one-shot prompt. Put framing, one camera move, one subject action, and lighting in that order.
- Generate a short test. Inspect identity, geometry, motion, and the intended cut point.
- Save the successful settings. Keep the exact prompt, reference files, seed, model version, and generation date together.

Should I save the seed if a shot is successful?
Yes, but save more than the seed. Keep the exact prompt, reference files, model and version, interface or endpoint, and generation date so you can reproduce the conditions if the service changes.
Can I switch models halfway through a sequence?
You can, but expect a visual handoff rather than seamless identity preservation. Different models interpret references, facial details, and camera instructions differently, so use a deliberate cut or transitional shot when changing model families.
Can video editing software repair a changed face?
Editing can hide a brief mismatch with a cutaway, reaction shot, or tighter trim, but it cannot reliably reconstruct the original identity inside generated frames. Fix the source reference or regenerate the affected shot when the mismatch is story-critical.
